LOVE all of Krueger's books. I've learned so much about a part of the country with which I have little familiarity. Excellently drawn characters.

A superb book. This is an excellent series. The characters are meaningful as are the plots. I'm hoping for more of the same.

I feel like the back story is missing. Is there a book covering his time in Chicago? How did the O'CONNOR family begin? I feel like I'm missing something important, but it says this is the first book.

Great author, great book

As a trainer, I found this book refreshing in its approach. Although many of today's books and articles on presentations encourage the use of pictures and less text, Garr Reynolds has found a unique method of presenting this information. If you are a trainer/instructor/slide designer, you will definitely find this book helpful.

Though my rule is that I only give five stars for books that can stand the test of time, I will make an exception here. Though this book is relevant only for now, it is a must read. Like Garr, I too am sick of how Power Point has been abused. Also like Garr, I lived in Japan for a couple of years and learned how to change my way of doing presentations. I have practiced that method till this day. Read this book on how to frame your message in a presentation format. Close to 100% of my presentations are very technical so sometimes Garr’s ideas may not be all that applicable, but the bottom line is. Even if you are an experienced Presentation giver, I do recommend this book as a refresher on how to deliver the message in a lasting manner without death by PowerPoint. The true reason I don’t think this book can last forever is eventually someone will come up with a better way to present ideas and Power Point will be disrupted.

I have been reading Garr Reynold's Presentation Zen blog even before the first book came out. Getting Presentation Zen (The Book) was just the next logical step, since it provides all that useful information you can find on the website in a structured, readable, and easily accessible way. Four years and another two books (Presentation Zen Design and The Naked Presenter) later, there is now a second edition of the original Presentation Zen book. What can we expect from it?What's new? It's somewhat ironic that the first testimonial in the book states that "it's often the slim books that have the most impact" when the second edition of Presentation Zen is noticeably thicker than the first. 60 additional pages or 25% more, to be exact. At a first glance, there are still the same 5 sections as in the first edition:1. Introduction2. Preparation3. Design4. Delivery5. The Next StepOn closer inspection, the Delivery section has gained an additional chapter, The Need for Engagement, which accounts for about half of the additional pages. The rest are distributed over the other chapters, some of which gained a few more pages that way. Most of those changes are subtle and you often won't notice them unless you compare both editions side by side. References to iPads and Prezi (both of which only came out after the first edition) or photos from TEDxTokyo 2011 are also signs of a discreet update. You'll also find content that Garr published on the Presentation Zen blog during 2011, e.g. from an article on the power of faces. The Need for Engagement, the new chapter, picks up some thoughts from The Naked Presenter, Garr's third book. In fact, it very much resembles chapter 4, Engage with Passion, Proximity, and Play from that book in that it talks about emotions, mirror neurons, and the need to remove barriers. It's not a straight copy, though, but the same ideas re-explained.Obviously, this second edition of Presentation Zen is not a radical rewrite but a careful update. Things have been made clearer or explained in more detail where necessary, new content has carefully been injected where appropriate. If you know the first edition, it still feels like the same book and you're only left wondering if some specific nugget is really new or if you've overlooked it the last time you read the book. I seem to remember Garr stating that "It's the same book, only better" or words to that effect. That about sums it up.What's old?All subtle and more obvious changes aside, Presentation Zen is still THE book to read on modern presentation design and delivery. Presentation Zen is an approach, not a method or blueprint that you have to follow slavishly. The idea is to create and deliver the best possible presentation for your specific audience. And while that obviously means more work in preparation, Garr provides the encouragement that it's worth it if you want to really reach your audience. The Presentation Zen book contains all that you need to make this happen, backed up with scientific evidence where needed and supported with real-life examples. On top of that, it's easy to read and Garr's passion for his topic and his roots in Zen come across as honest without resorting to superlatives or over-the-top wording that plague so many nonfiction books by American authors. It's a joy to read and encourages you to give the Presentation Zen approach a try. What more can you expect? The VerdictWhat has been true for the first edition is even more so for the second one: If you're only going to buy one book about presentations, this should be it. It will provide you with all the necessary guidance for creating great, effective, and memorable presentations. When I'm working on a new presentation, I often open up the book at a random page and start reading. It always helps to either reinforce an aspect I was already working on or reminds me of something I need to think about. In other words, it's a great source of inspiration, even 4 years after its first publication and after having re-read it (in whole or in parts) numerous times. The second edition feels more "complete" now, by which I mean that the extra pages all add useful information and don't feel bolted on. The only downside, I guess, is that there's less need for buying The Naked Presenter now - but that's Garr's (and his publisher's) problem, not yours ;-) This, I guess, also answers the question what you should do if you already own the first edition. If you already have the first edition and The Naked Presenter, there's probably no need to rush and buy the second edition - unless your copy is beginning to fall apart from heavy use. But if you held back from buying Presentation Zen until now - don't wait any longer. Your audience will be grateful.

I bought this book for one of my grad school classes and it was immediately my favorite part of the class. It will help you to create vivid and memorable visual presentations. The book itself is stunning, a joy to flip through and/or read. If you give presentations, you owe it to yourself to level up your game by buying this book!

Since another reviewer has done such a beautiful job, I won't repeat his comments, other than to say "Ditto!"What a wonderful resource for ideas, tools, and inspiration. After a ten-year hiatus, I am moving from private practice to focusing on courses, workshops, and seminars. Realizing my presentation skills were rusty, after reading Naked Design in one sitting, I came back and immediately purchased Presentation Zen (2nd Ed). as with N/D, I couldn't put it down until the last page.Presentation Zen gives marvelous guidance for creating truly effective and memorable presentations. As I am developing the 2012 programs, every time I open the book to clarify a point, find myself re-reading whole chapters again, and again, and picking up on another delightful nuance each time. Originally purchased the Kindle version but, as with Naked Design, decided to get the hard copy because it is one I will want to keep at hand for a long time. Worth every penny -- and much more!

I purchased this for a grad class. I'll be honest, there are few books I've had to read in college and grad school that I actually completed. Not only did I read the entire book of "Presentation Zen", I also chose to keep it. I have referenced it in job interviews as a resource for reminding us how to simplify presentations in both digital (I.e. PowerPoint and Google slides), and non-digital (general lesson planning and presenting) formats. I appreciate the simplicity of the book's design and layout as it truly aligns with the message the author shares.

While I buy on Amazon virtually everyday, I rarely if ever give product reviews. However after I ordered Susie Wyshak's "Good Food Great Business" on a whim Friday Night, I received it Monday afternoon. Now nearly 24 hours later, I've read and highlighted every single page. It will sound overstated and cliche, but this book is an absolute game-changer. There is no other way to describe it....Unlike many of the inspirational stories in this book, I actually have spent the past 8 years since graduating from Penn State working in the snack food corporate world. I found it refreshing and inspiring to see that there are so many success stories for those that had virtually no food experience at all before starting their adventure. My perspective is different - primarily because up to 1/1/15, I was the Director, Business Transformation and Strategic Initiatives for the largest privately held snack company in the United States. After 8 years, I had decided to leave the corporate snack world to pursue my dream of providing organic snacks and nutrition education to children across the world. Now 45 days into this voyage, we have been making great progress BUT yesterday we received the map for our journey. I had never heard of Ms. Wyshak before yesterday but I promise I'll never forget her. Thank you so much for this exceptional book of knowledge. It has a great mix of information that I could easily relate to my time at that large privately held company and also to what I've been encountering over the past 45 days. My only regret is that I did not order this book 45 days sooner! This isn't a paid advertisement and I dont know the author...if you are starting a food business...buy this book now...its worth so much more than every penny!

This book is aimed at people who are cooking up huge batches of specialty recipes using outside-sourced ingerdients, so if you are a small-time grower-producer of a unique or unusual processed specialty item (like I am), it may give you a few general ideas, but won't be especially useful. (Unfortunately, most small grower-oriented books are geared to marketing diverse fresh produce and farmer's market selling. I seem to be falling into a crack between genres - I guess that's truly a niche!) I can see how the book might be a decent simple introduction for recipe-based producers who hope to reach national distribution, assuming they start out knowing absolutely nothing, and it does include some helpful cautionary tales. The depth of information is uneven, and for the most part if you want concrete, usable steps or solid factual information you will (as she tells you often) have to look online, either at her website or elsewhere. The style of the book is breezy, superficial, and full of slogans and stories, and eventually I found it a bit cloying.

I've been reading Good Food, Great Business for months now. I say months not because it's a tome, but because it's jam-packed with actionable content and after my first read, most of the book was dog-eared for me to revisit with action steps. This is a fantastic, task-based education that is perfect for new food startups (and probably a few older ones who are in a stalemate and need a boost.). I've gotten tactical advice and clarity, but more importantly, I've also been given a trail of breadcrumbs to lead us down the next steps. Because of this book, I'm now following the rabbit hole down and learning things on different websites (Susie is a writer for The Balance as well). I know from my previous successes in other businesses that I don't know what I don't know, so giving your startup space to wander around for a bit is critical to finding out what you didn't know you needed to find. Susie gave me the trails and that alone is worth the price of this book.

I want to market my mother's soup - this book is amazing - happy I found it on Amazon and grateful that Susie was not afraid to share what she knew and learned with the rest of us of what it takes to take a product to market - I'm only half way through the book, as there is so much to learn - I can't wait to finish it. I don't doubt if I heed her advise, do her template work that my mother's soup will be a success.

I absolutely think this book is well written, informative and up to date. Not only is the book itself, aesthetically pleasing and easy to read but this author totally knows how to help a small business owner get their product off the ground.Being one of two people running a (non Artisan) food business, I really needed a fresh look to see why the company was not reaching the goals we had aimed for after many years. I found her book very informative and filled with a plethora of insights and ideas, with small stories to bring the lessons home. Even if you have started the small food business years ago, and even if your products are not Artisan, this book is a must read!

If you are even thinking about starting a food business, buy this book NOW! I only wish I had bought it sooner! The sheer wealth of knowledge that Susie shares throughout the book is amazing and will inspire you to approach your food business in a much more strategic way.Perform the action items at the end of each chapter to begin developing a plan for bringing your idea to fruition. Access to business planning templates, articles, and resources are also available in addition to the book. This book is a must read for food entrepreneurs!

I loved this book Good Food, Great Business! I’m a first time food entrepreneur and it was exactly what I needed. I especially appreciated the downloadable checklists for everything from product testing to finding a good co-packer. If you are in the food business or interested in getting started this is a must read.I reached out to the Author for issue unique to our business. Susie was incredible responsive and helpful

Beautifully Written. Precise Language Choices. Honest Storytelling. Ms. Watson Can Write."The Language of Kindness" is that rare memoir that makes one wonder why the literary community fawns over Karl Ove Knausgaard and Elena Ferrante. Literature is a church. It is found not when a few gather to worship but when writing craft meets narrative truth. My wife is a nurse. Not only a nurse, but a nurse of great competence. She elicits one's trust in seconds. I am not biased. These are things others say about her. She scored well for her MCAT. But time and even prevented her from attending Medical School. In this, her patients have lucked out. I bought this memoir for her. She adored it. Then I discovered this tidy, specific book, one that does a fair job even of explicating the accomplishments of a certain Miss Nightengals, who in a real way set the parameters of this too overlooked profession.Nursing truly is a calling. There are important, no, vital members of the healthcare community. The smart ones save your lives from inexperienced residents and narcissistic doctors all the time -- and my wife would be among the first to point out that many, especially in Los Angeles or the DC Metro area -- are extremely talented. My wife is a cardio-thoracic ICU nurse. But she has served across the board, and from PACU to NICU to the ER, she has seen it all, and Christie Watson has shed light on much of it, from showing the line of possible career realities that led her to her calling to providing one with a fine set of scenes that tell the story of one man's struggle with mental illness, to the glories Ms. Watson has known in midwifery. Fine, fine work. Godspeed. Read it if you have never contemplated the field. This, especially, is the sort of reading in which I learn something - while being gripped by the story told.

Ms. Watson shares her own feelings along with detailed descriptions of events and drew me into her story with clear explanations and her knowledge of procedures and disease processes. I wish she had included the anxiety nurses experience over the way in which they can be unexpectedly “pulled” from one department to another as the hospital census demands. Each department has a unique layout and, although the basics of nursing are the same, there are different aspects to look for and chart in different types of nursing. The prospect of this happening caused me great anxiety and made it difficult to plan my work during my thirty years as a nurse in Tennessee hospitals. Both Ms. Watson and I enjoyed our nursing careers and felt that we received more from our patients than we were able to give to them.Margaret S. McMillion “Personal Baggage: A Tale of Marriage, Medicine, and Murder”

A wonderful sad and uplifting book about what it’s like to be a nurse. Would that all nurses could be like Miss Christie. Should be required reading for all nursing students and would be patients- indeed all of us. The writing is beautiful.

This book should be required reading for seniors, their families and all possible caregivers. No, wait, it is a book that every compassionate adult should read.Don’t miss this extraordinarily heart-felt discussion of the importance of respectful, dignified and loving end-of-life care.

This book depicts the very human side of nursing and the toll it takes on those in the profession. It is about nursing in Britain rather than the U.S. but nursing is a universal profession so that does not detract from the book, however, it does depict a very different health care system than in the United States. If you love medical memoir, you will love it.

As a nurse myself, I felt instantly comfortable with the scenarios and descriptions provided. This book was a great reminder that what we do matters on many different levels, and sometimes the greatest kindnesses are received from the most unlikely places. In the end, we all need kindness.

This account of a nurse's life in the UK was is disappointment. It lacked the drama of a true memoir and was filled with medical detail that was not narratively needed. It needed a good editor!

Very much enjoyed the view of nursing in the British national health system. She demonstrates good nursing care and the challenges in achieving it. Also shows the variety of nursing jobs available as a nurse--either in the UK or the US.

I liked the author’s podcast interview by the respected, data driven and the whimsical Mad Fientist. I bought this book for two important reasons: it was self-published and the author’s persistent reference to Jack Bogle’s genius. I support self-published financial authors because the traditional publishers deploy editors to tweak the author’s voice, and original story, to make the final “processed” book more sellable. Instead, self-published authors do not have to satisfy shareholders, or generate sales, so the author’s message about Bogle’s investment philosophy and the company he founded, Vanguard, remains organic for the readers’ best interest. This book is perfect for beginners, and some seasoned investors who are sick and tired of searching for that short-term investment miracle. Collins stuck with Bogle’s purest message from the beginning to the last word. As a Bogle devotee, I appreciate his courage to stand up, write a terrific book and argue effectively for the indexing strategy and against the delusional appeal of day-traders, hedge fund managers, active management strategies, timers, or individuals who claim they can successfully speculate and win big. Far too many normal investors get caught up in those phony, but exciting fantasies and lose. The new guy or gal investor gets the skills to construct a simple portfolio you understand, and then have the courage and the confidence to permanently ignore the media’s seductive financial noise machine. The Simple Path to Wealth basic message to beginners is well-known in the Do It Yourself (DIY) and ESPECIALLY for the Youthful Financial Independence (aka FI) community.• think long-term• live below your means• plan ahead with a fully diversified portfolio (except international stocks, more on this below)• invest in Vanguards low-cost index fundsSooooo, what is not to like? I’ll admit it’s a boring plan, and not all DIYers embrace it. But I love my boring plan and it’s exactly where the power of what we can do lies—after setting up our plan, we must be patient.Collins writes much about psychology, for good reason. The power lies with us. It's not us versus the big intimidating stock market. With time and experience, we learn to be psychologically tough for long periods of time. In the movie Wizard of OZ, Glenda told Dorothy that she “always had the power to go home again?” It's the same for us investors. All of the features of a constructing a balanced plan remains under our control. It fairly easy to learn. But the hard part is the unfair and counterintuitive psychology. Thinking long-term is the best antidote. Over time the growth will pay enough of a return to meet or beat the inflation rate. Meeting or beating inflation is a simple, realistic goal, and psychological attractive. This book shows you how to like saving with minimal time and effort to discover the investing process.Patience, psychology, and philosophy are a difficult sell. Many investing aficionados are more interested in the adrenaline rush and chasing the opposite sex than building wealth over time. The market is not something to conquer or control. It is simply made up of wonderful organizations of hardworking people, called publicly traded corporations. The author explains how to harness all of that positive corporate energy, and just flow with it, whether it goes up or down, and over time it goes up. The author addressed the tough sell challenge with elegance and subtle toughness. The author discusses investment costs, taxes, tax-deferred retirement plans offered by employers, the retirement years and strategies to keep from running out of money. My favorite chapters are “Why I don’t like Investment Advisers” and “Some final thoughts about risk.” Financial advisers are an easy target with hundreds of reasons not to like. Most of us DIYers will never need a financial adviser, for two good reasons: Collins writes “Nobody cares about your money more than you do,” and “you can learn to manage your money yourself with far less cost and better results.” From my personal experience, knowing how to save investment costs alone was enough to pay cash for the Tesla Model S.On the subject of risk, my favorite part, and I quote as the author was speaking to the zombie apocalyptics among us especially the financial media: “Major Armageddon extinctions events, like the asteroid that took out the dinosaurs some 65 million years ago, have happened about five times. So that’s about one every 10 million years or so. Are we really arrogant enough to think it’s going to happen in the geological eye-blink we’ll be around? That we’ll be the ones to witness it? No likely.” Economic Armageddon ain’t going to happen either. There are a few minor omissions. The author is not well known, so he needs to talk more about himself about what he did. I felt like he had more to say as examples of his fears of risk and the mistakes he made. All of that would have made the book even more authentic and organic. What was the role of his wife? What exactly did the author and his wife do for a living? He did report that he worked as a financial analyst. So, was he in the financial industry? He did not explain why he had an overly aggressive portfolio for an individual in his 60s. He did not share his diversification plan, except that he doesn’t own international stocks (he explains why).Consequently, I give him an A for telling us how to set up a portfolio and his rationale, but I give him a B for not showing what exactly he did and for how long. His rationale is spot on, but portfolio construction and asset allocation strategies and information can be found in many books (The Boglehead Guide to Investors, any book written by Jack Bogle or his followers, Ferri, Swedroe, Roth, and Bernstein).• Some other minor items that I found perplexing and discouraging for people starting out. On page 246, he writes, “Save and invest at least 50% of your income.” What? I reread this again and again, and could not comprehend why the author wrote this. In my working career, I could not even contribute the maximum allowed in my 403(b) plan let alone save 50% of my income (No, I never had new car payments because I could not afford car payments and invest too). Yet, I reached financial independence at age 61. 50% of one’s income is overreaching and dangerously discouraging (unless you are a highly elite and talented employee with a 7 figure income). For the rest of us, just start with what you can afford. For example, I started at age 37 with $200 a month in my 403(b), and that was a lot out of my meager income. But I kept it up for 24 more years.• Back to his strategy about avoid international stocks. The author knows he will get pushback, and he probably has heard my argument for international investing many times. Diversification means investing in all available stocks, worldwide. So, let’s take advantage of these opportunities to invest in just one fund, the Vanguard Total World Stock ETF (VT). The author won’t have it. IMO, the author might be reflecting his age because he says that investing in the United States domestic market is enough diversification because of the worn-out global connections argument. He tries to offer valid reasons, but they are out-of-date, and one about excessive costs is flatly wrong. Vanguard's Global fund charges .14%. I don’t know about you, but that is inexpensive. Also, I am 69 years old and old enough to remember my elders saying that is too risky to invest in foreign stocks. We are well into the 21st century and the world has changed. Don’t you think that international corporations want to grow and prosper too? Of course. Don’t you think opportunities for diversification have evolved for the better? Yes. I want as much diversification as possible to reduce equity risk, and reduce volatility. I might even get higher returns, but that’s not part of my expectations. The global index funds or ITFs make full diversification in just one investment a synch.• Another minor objection is his downplaying the Roth IRA. I think he over complicated with trying to predict the tax rate to decide to use or not use the Roth IRA. It’s futile and a waste of time to guess the future. Not having to pay capital gains taxes after investing in the Roth IRA is one of the best strategies for us regular investors (You can run the numbers on a brilliant Excel program created by The Finance Buff). After running the numbers on the Excel program, you will be thoroughly convinced to include the Roth IRA in your plan.• One last objection. I recommend to readers who don’t have a “lump sum” that is, a bundle of money to invest already, that you ignore the “Why I don’t like dollar cost averaging” chapter. I had to use DCA during my entire working career investing in my 403(b). Because I started from NOTHING and had less than $50,000 for years. If you have a lump sum to invest, follow the author’s advice. But I think I can speak for most investors who have little choice but to use DCA. His opinion about DCA was more discouraging than encouraging.Collin’s strong opinions about some of his investment ideas represent more of his individuality than sound investment practice. Of course, the author never intended to be discouraging. I am just responding as a reader with a few of my opinions about his outstanding work. That’s perfectly fine for him as his opinions worked for him and they might work for you too. My opinions worked well for me. In the final analyses, he follows the “Boglehead” way. For that, I am delighted he wrote a great self-published book showing once again the work of the legendary investor, advocate, and teacher, Jack Bogle. Outside of these minor differences of opinion, Mr. Collins earned a well-deserved five stars. In sum, if any author self-publishes a book about investing, I think it is important to readers to know that the message is organic—no other agenda item hangs in secret, other than to explain and lay out a simple plan which will connect with new investors and get them results.

Hands down one of the best financial books I’ve ever read or heard about. If I could gift a copy of it to every single graduate, I would. This book is like listening to a sage friend who has endured decades of ‘playing / timing’ the market and concluded there is an easier way. Not only is this friend willing to share the way, it’s is not even a scam or get rich quick scheme. It is a straightforward, achievable process: avoid / eliminate debt, spend less than you earn, invest in low-cost index funds, and then do NOTHING. Simply sit back and wait for the magic of time and compound interest to do the rest. This means you no longer have to worry about the next stock market crash or try to find the next Apple or bitcoin. JL Collins introduced me to the concept of F- You money (which I now call F- Yeah money thanks to ProudMoney.com). About two years ago, when I realized I had F- Yeah money, it transformed the way I approached work. Meetings were no longer stressful, crises of the day seemed ridiculous. A year ago, I moved to part-time. This year, I’m thrilled to report that both my husband and I have just early retired at 45 and 47 respectively. I attribute a lot of this to reading this book. I gave me the facts I needed to believe we had hit our number and would be just fine. Albert Einstein called compound interest is the most powerful force in the universe and the greatest mathematical discovery of all time. I say the knowledge of FIRE (financial independence retire early) gives compound interest a run for its money. Read this book then give it to someone struggling or boasting about this stock or that one. It truly can change your life.

Cannot recommend this book enough. I'm ordering copies for everyone I care about. Not only is the path simple, but the writing is fun and easy to read. I never dreamed a personal finance book could fit either of those descriptions. Collins argues, with lots of backup, that the simple way to invest (Vanguard index funds) is also the most effective and profitable way to invest. This book makes the path to financial independence clear and easy to follow. You just need to find the fiscal discipline and psychological fortitude to stay the course. This book is changing my life and giving me a true sense of optimism and security.

JL Collins is essentially a "Boglehead", and he admits that Jack Bogle is his personal hero. For those of you who dont know, Bogleheads are people who subscribe to Jack Bogle's (founder of Vanguard) philosophy on investing, which in simplest terms is investing and holding in minimally-managed index funds. There is some redundancy in his chapters, which are really just breaks in conversation, but his overarching message is easy to grasp and accessible for anyone who desires to either retire early or become financially independent. This isnt an "early retirement" book per se, but one could apply these principles (and indeed many do) to generate enough passive wealth to drop out of the rat race. Of course, the other big pieces to the early retirement puzzle are frugal living and debt elimination, which arent the main themes he explores. For me this book was very helpful since I was a relative neophyte to all things investing. Collins has an easygoing, conversational style that is both engaging and instructional; and he de-mystifies (or rather translates) investment lingo to present the fundamental concepts you need to understand. In short, his message is:Eliminate debtUnderstand how the stock market works, and why it is the most powerful wealth-building tool there isInvest in the total stock market index through Vanguard (no he isnt paid by Vanguard)HOLD through the highs and lowsReap the rewards after years of diligenceI recommend it to anyone interested in early retirement or financial independence, especially investing novices. Worth the money spent.
