I just finished reading Bonnie Zieman’s memoir, Fading Out of the JW Cult, and I would highly recommend this book. What makes her story so special is that the protagonist is an experienced psychotherapist. While sharing her story, she explains the psychological manipulation at play in trying to shape her personality. In my opinion, Bonnie’s 2016 memoir is a must-read book for anyone who wants to understand how the Watchtower (intentionally) and family (mostly well-intentioned) manipulates children and teenagers of Jehovah’s Witnesses. If David Letterman was reviewing Bonnie’s memoir on his Late Night Show, he would normally present ten reasons for why the public should read her book. But because we have familial and non-familial (a cult) at play unduly influencing Bonnie, I have decided to enlarge the list to fifteen, which are from 15 to one:15. You will get to meet Bonnie’s paternal grandfather, who was the epitome of a true believer, putting his three young sons in an orphanage so he could proselytize the teachings of Charles Taze Russell in eastern Canada. Not a good omen for Bonnie’s father (familial) and his potential parenting skills14. If you did not already know it, Canadian Watchtower executives do love their body massages as Bonnie’s young, naïve massage therapist mother discovered.13. Believe it or not, Armageddon was just around the corner in 1941, but Bonnie’s parents ignored Judge Rutherford’s warnings not to marry or have children because the end was so close. You will be delighted to learn how they chose to spend their time, instead of preaching doom-and-gloom for non-JW believers at Armageddon.12. Bribing Bonnie with six sticks of grape gum, then just a very little girl, to go out in the Watchtower Street work will leave you wondering, “What was her mama thinking?”11. Bonnie’s mom could have easily been an accessory to a major crime. But with a little luck, and not Jehovah’s invisible hand, “being lucky” saves the day.10. The story of Bonnie’s childhood friend, Bobby, will tear at your heart strings, an experience that proved to be a significant coming-of-age wake-up call for her.9. Bonnie’s baptism experience is an indictment of Watchtower’s blatant use of undue influence on children by JW parents. You will love Bonnie’s mom, but not on this occasion, although it’s really Watchtower’s psychological manipulation.8. If you think that you can trust good JW young men to behave on dates, one chapter in her book will definitely change your mind.7. In a chapter called The Slap, Bonnie and her father awaken to the reality that dysfunction is a major bi-product of Watchtower’s culture, although neither of them knew it at the time; the invisible hand of Watchtower at work.6. A chapter about Bonnie getting married ‘properly’ according to a died-in-the-wool JW elder in her husband’s family could only happen in JW La-la Land.5. If you have the misguided belief that Watchtower leaders are all kind, loving and benevolent, Bonnie describes a dinner scene with a circuit oversee that should jolt you to your senses. Unfortunately, behind-the scenes behavior like this are not that uncommon because of the nature of Watchtower’s pyramid-like culture.4. If you think Watchtower’s long-time VP, Fred Franz, was not crazy, Bonnie will set you straight several times in her book. Fred Franz, I believe, was plighted with a severe case of Asperger’s Syndrome, and he was allowed to set policy and prophesy future events for Watchtower without any accountability.3. When a person leaves Watchtower, he or she must be prepared to negotiate a long and challenging learning curve if they want to find and claim their authentic identity. Bonnie’s book is an excellent roadmap to show readers how it can be done in spite of massive amounts of misinformation and emotional abuse.2. For me personally, the total lack of human feelings and emotions (the cult identity) by hard-core true-believing JWs is brought home to roost in chapter 36. While reading this chapter, I was reminded that anyone who chooses to attend and confess at a JW Judicial Committee Meeting should never go alone. A good attorney and someone from the press should be there with them, although if those were the conditions, it could mean the Waterloo for these kinds of Watchtower-style kangaroo courts and sinister undue influence.1. In Chapter 2, Bonnie tells the story about The Gift, a talk delivered by a District Overseer at a 1978 Montreal convention. It was an unplanned gift, that had it been filmed live and preserved, it would have brought Watchtower to its knees and shown the public how Watchtower psychologically manipulates its members. You can read all about “the gift” and much more in Bonnie Zieman’s excellent memoir, Fading Out of the JW Cult.

What a great memoir! Not only was it a story of her life but, Ms. Zieman also included her training as a therapist in this book. It helped me with some guilt I didn't even realize I had from leaving the JW cult. Thank you Bonnie!

I was never a babtized witness but was raised as one. Virtually my whole family is a Jehovah's Witness , and this book truly describes the guilt and brainwashing one endures. As an adult, I sometimes thought about studying and becoming a witness like the rest of my family, as like you said, once your indoctrinated, it is hard to ever put out of your mind. However, this nagging, deep within my heart, could never let me be secure in my decision and instead raised mariads of questions that could never be answered. However, always feeling like I never had enough knowledge of the "truth" still made me want to learn more and see where the witnesses and my family have the practices they have and if they really are from the Bible. This so-called religion has always been a large dark cloud over me. I was so glad I never became a babtized witness! This book is a true eye opener and shows that my feelings are perfectly normal, and the questions I have always had, now have some answers. Thank you for this amazing book.

It was very instructive about JW history and deeply personal about the difficulties of being raised as a JW.

I, too, was one of Jehovah's Witnesses. This is truly a journey of healing, mind, body, soul, and yes, life. Freedom to use the gift that all of us were given, choice, freedom to decide what we want to do! Every day! Thank you so much for sharing your experience with others who have also lost family and friends through unnatural family shunning.

From the moment I started reading I was 100% captivated! What a fascinating and disturbing memoir! I found that I could relate to your life story in so many ways. I appreciate your honesty and willingness to share your story... a story that will help so many of us survivors feel not so alone :)Thank you Bonnie for your bravery!Daisy

Being raised in a jw. Home. Born in. This book helped me see all of the cult feelings I thought it had but was to afraid to say. Thank you Bonnie for sharing.

Amazing story of a brave woman.

I have long been a fan of Penn & Teller. I have also read all the books that both have written. This book is one for the book. I too got too fat as the years went by. Half-hearted attempts to loose the weight were compete failures. I figured that in Penn could do it, so could I. Yes, doing exactly, almost, what Penn did, I lost fifty-two pounds. Forty of that was in three months. I feel great. Thank you, Penn.

I downloaded the Kindle version and have read nearly half of it. I found it very interesting because I am on the same plant based program that Penn lost his weight on. I did not start out with only potatoes for the first 2 weeks but do eat plant based. I have lost 38 Lbs in 40 days it was almost effortless and I have lost at the same rate as Penn....... .09 of a pound a day!!! If you love beans whole grain pasta potatoes and vegetables/fruit this is the way to go. No counting calories even no exercise if you prefer. Penn recommends exercise after you get to decent weight and I have to agree. It will be easier on your cardiovascular system and joints especially if you have a lot to lose....It took me nearly 59 years to figure this out ! Read Dr. McDougils Starch Solution book if you want to get started.

It’s Penn Jillette again, so you think – more debunking of fraudulent magic? Questioning God, perhaps? But no. This is a 300 page memoir of dieting. Took me by surprise. I would not have read it had I known. But Jillette pulls it off by simply being Penn Jillette. He is loud, obnoxious, rambunctious, sarcastic and he swears way too much for it to have any impact at all. But he’s entertaining, self-deprecating, highly opinionated, and funny. So it works. Much better than run of the mill diet books.Like most Americans, as he got older, Jillette got heavier. He noticed that while chocolate cake was a treat his mother made a few times a year, it was now available daily, if not hourly. There is junk food everywhere – at meetings, in the green room, backstage, and he ate basically all day long. He was sluggish, out of breath, and in denial. And he was on blood pressure meds and other joys. And this is someone who has never smoked, drank or taken recreational drugs. By losing a hundred pounds, he found he could give up the meds. He could taste tastes better and he lost his cravings for doughnuts and other such staples of SAD – the Standard American Diet. And with this book he has become an evangelist for it.To the the point of being aggravating. It’s a 300 page testimonial to Ray Cronise, who designed his program, and who is himself now leveraging off helping Penn Jillette lose that hundred pounds. It’s a multipronged multimedia marketing campaign, and that lessens the love, at least for me. For the millions of the overweight and obese, I hope it is inspirational. The book desperately needs editing. It is terribly repetitive. Jillette has no problem saying the same thing eight or ten times. It is possibly the longest diet memoir in history. It’s almost a page a day of his diet. But it’s from the heart, and it’s the usual honest, forthright and fearless Penn Jillette, so there’s little point going on about it.The message is terrific. Eat better and you will crave better foods. It’s a virtuous circle. You lose the extra weight, you feel more energetic, and your body thanks you by making life easier. But it’s not magic.David Wineberg

Penn Gillette has always come across to me as a typical loudmouth annoying libertarian know-it-all. That said, I really love his filth-infested writing style and the honesty and humility he shares as he went through this transformation. It's not an airy-fairy book full of impossible OCD food weighing requirements, it's practical enough to point you in the right direction to gird your cajones and start making habit changes and awareness in the right areas to start turning the ship around. By the end of the book I realized that I went through the diet journey with him but the details of exactly what he did were actually missing or mostly obfuscated between pages of swearing and personal asides. After failing to try rereading and figuring out his exact process, I googled up some people better at extracting out some of the key elements of the diet after doing a couple weeks of potatoes. Still, looks like many details were left out to leave an opening for his guru "Cray-Ray" to sell another book containing clearer guidance.Personally I've knocked my weight from the 230s to the lower 2-teens so far. I'm in less of a rush to lose it than Penn was, but definitely concerned about the downside of where my weight had crept up to. Probably the key to Penn's approach for me is to get the "shame" part off the table. Most dieting plans are painfully focusing on how terrible you are for having weight and that if you ever have another french fry after starting the plan you will completely fail, those black-and-white games never worked for me. Penn gave me hope that there were some "gray ways" to lose and maintain weight, and down the road I can even have a "rare and appropriate" steak and/or fries and could still maintain my target weight. Thanks to this guy, I'm eating and enjoying- maybe even craving healthy foods that I used to avoid like the plague. I haven't gone Shiite on the rules, so my weight loss isn't as dramatic as Penn's for now. But it feels damn good to walk and make love a little more enthusiastically, to push away food when I'm aware I'm full rather than always finish the plate, and find massive enjoyment in a simple bowl of greens and some Apple cider vinegar rather than being 5 tablespoons of fatty dressing every time.If you hate diet books, you might find some inspiration and angles you hadn't considered in this cuss-laden diary of a madman. And as much as I doubted, once I tried it to prove him wrong- the scale and my taste buds actually proved him accurate. Thanks Penn, haven't seen you live since the '80s but glad you're alive now to help me become more alive.

Ilene Beckerman, a few years ago thrilled readers when she told the story of her life through her clothes in the book Love, Loss and What I Wore. In Ms. Beckerman's second book,What We Do for Love, she wrote about her courtship, marraige, divorce and remarraige. And now in her latest book, Mother of the Bride, this witty and poignant author describes to her readers the true story of what it means to be the mother of the bride. And what a fun and insightful book this turns out to be. Because nestled between the quest for a suitable mother of the bride dress and a menu which won't cause indigestion, and other stress factors which are off the Richter scale, the author also tells us what it means to raise a daughter and watch her walk down the aisle towards her own married life. What every mother thinks she longs for becomes bittersweet for Ms. Beckerman as her days as an important Mommy to her daughter are now replaced by her daughter's Prince Charming.I not only loved the words Ilene Beckerman wrote but the clever illustrations she did to depict events and her feelings. And I especially like the way she summed up this event at the end by saying that, "the planning took a year, the ceremony took 20 minutes, the wedding recpetion was four hours long and I'd do it again in a heartbeat." Actually Ms. Beckerman has two other daughters so hopefully she got to do this again or will be doing it in the near future. As I closed this book I thought how much I am looking forward to my turn as the mother of the bride when our daughter finds her Mr. Right. For now I am conetnt to clutch Ms. Beckerman's book in hand and dream of a long aisle and wishes for health and happiness as our daughter is married.

This is a cookie book. It's fun and sweet and quick. It really isn't a full book but it is certainly worth the read and it's delightfully illustrated. I don't usually use the word "delightfully" but it seems to work for this book. I especially recommend it for mothers of brides. It's laugh out loud funny and then you have to get a Kleenex. The format is unique and I liked it. James Thurber would have loved it. I would recommend it as a gift for a friend as soon as she tells you her daughter is getting married. She'll appreciate it.

This is my fourth Ilene Beckerman book, and I always love them. I enjoy her writing style, and her illustrations are icing on the cake. I truly wish she'd write more books!

My younger daughter just set a date for her wedding so when I ran across this book I decided it might be interesting. Although humorous, there is so much that touches my heart. It also reminded me not to go overboard when my daughter plans HER wedding.

My soon-to-be-married daughter gave this to me last year. I laughed, I cried, I loved this book. Then I bought it for two friends last month. They loved it, too! A light-hearted look at being "Mother of the Bride"!

Cute, quick read. Entertaining, not informing, but it does lighten the burden a bit.

This book was great. It is written with humor and insight, and I probably would not have appreciated it before this adventure we call "being the M.O.B". It is definately worth every penny.
