Object Oriented Perl: A Comprehensive Guide to Concepts and Programming Techniques, by Damian Conway

Amazon.com Review

Perl has always been a powerful and popular programming language, but with its new object capabilities, it can do even more. Written for anyone with a little Perl experience, Damian Conway's Object Oriented Perl provides an invaluable guide to virtually every aspect of object-oriented programming in Perl. The most notable thing about Object Oriented Perl is Conway's excellent perspective on object-oriented concepts and how they are implemented in Perl. This book does a remarkable job of cutting through traditional jargon and illustrating how basic object-oriented design techniques are handled in Perl. (A useful appendix attests to the author's wide-ranging knowledge, with a comparison of Smalltalk, Eiffel, C++, and Java with Perl, including a summary of object-oriented syntax for each.) This book also features a truly excellent review of basic Perl syntax. Throughout this text, the author shows you the basics of solid object design (illustrated using classes that model music CDs). Basic concepts like inheritance and polymorphism get thorough and clear coverage. The book also points out common mistakes and provides many tips for navigating the powerful and flexible (yet sometimes tricky) nuances of using Perl objects. For instance, Conway shows how to achieve true data encapsulation in Perl (which generally allows calls across modules) as well as its natural support for generic programming techniques. He also pays special attention to popular object modules available from CPAN (like Class::MethodmakerK, which simplifies declaring classes) and discusses performance issues and the tradeoff between programming convenience and speed often faced by today's Perl developer. Advanced chapters cover a number of techniques for adding persistence and invoking methods using multiple dispatching. Filled with syntactic tips and tricks, Object Oriented Perl is a sure bet for any programmer who wants to learn how to use Perl objects effectively. --Richard Dragan Topics covered: Perl language review, CPAN, Perl objects, 'blessing' and inheritance, polymorphism, Class::Struct and Class::Methodmaker modules, Perl ties and closures, operator overloading, encapsulation, multiple dispatch, Class::Multimethods, coarse-grained and fine-grained object persistence techniques, performance issues.

OOP is the definitive book on Object Oriented (OO) programming in Perl. It starts out with a very gentle 20 page primer on essential OO concepts, and follows on with a 50 page Perl refresher chapter. The best hardboiled synopsis of essential Perl concepts which this reader has yet read. This is one of those rare books which will thoroughly teach beginners, and yet continue to hold rapt, surprise, and inform more advanced readers as well. The book is a well paced introduction to OO, illustrating and implementing the core concepts of OO in the context of Perl. While the earliest chapters serve as building blocks to those that follow, the later chapters need not be read front to back, but rather as the topic appeals to the reader.Topics covered include: inheritance, polymorphism, ties, operator overloading, encapsulation, genericity, multiple dispatch, and persistent objects. Each topic is introduced along with code which highlights how each technique helps to solve common real world problems. As various tips, tricks, and pitfalls are covered, the reader will often find themselves revisiting and evolving improved solutions to familiar problems.A lot of languages implement a particular flavor of OO. And indeed, OOP shows a variety of the techniques and flavors of OO and how they may be implemented in Perl. -Explaining when and where each may best be used, and trade-offs involved. As a result, the reader comes away from the book with a greater understanding of OO, and not just a single style embraced by a particular language.Conway and Schwartz are well-known and respected throughout the Perl community. Their writing is clever, humorous, and while information dense... surprisingly easy to follow. There is a sense of grace and continuity to their writing which made this book a real pleasure to read.

After writing many objects in perl using the 50 odd pages found in Programming Perl I am glad to finally have a tome that contains lengthy documentation on object features of perl.I do wish this had been released a few years ago as it has pointed out a few errors in the way that I have been doing things. My ways work, but Damian shows techniques for improving the efficiency of object that I hadn't thought of before. If you are at the point in learning perl that you are starting to cut and paste code from your other scripts to do the same thing in a new script - it is time to buy this book. Cut and paste that code into an new module and you will never need to copy it again, this book will show you how.Even if you are just 'making a module' and aren't really thinking of making classes and objects, read this text - or at least use it as a reference. By doing a small amount of extra work beyond making a module you will be doing OO programming. This book shows you how easy it is to do.

While PERL might not be the best Object Oriented Programming (OOP) language, this book does a great job explaining OOP. The concepts are applicable to any OOP language. And if you're into PERL, this book is that much better. Well laid out and good job of getting the points across.

So you've been writing perl for while, you know your way around the camel book, and you even know a lot of the CPAN library. You've written a few CGI pages, and maybe even some mod_perl module. But you can't figure out the point of some of those perl features. Blind hashes? What are they for? And that 'bless' instruction? And typeglobs- huh? Maybe you're puzzled by that odd syntax some of the CPAN modules use- $class->export($var)? What's that all about?Relax. You've just stumbled into the world of object-oriented perl programming. And it's not as hard as you may think. Conway does a wonderful job of explaining how OOP works. His examples are perfectly transparant, and perfectly obvious. And he shows how OOP construction can be summed up neatly in three simple rules. There aren't a lot of prerequisites needed to make good use of this book. If you've got a basic familiarity with perl, and some basic experiece with programming, you're ready to dive in. Conway even gives you a review of the necessary perl essentials you'll need in chapters 2 and 3.A first-rate book, and one destined to be a perl classic.

And not only if you're interested in Object Oriented Programming! The first chapter of the book is a general overview of Perl, and I learned a lot of things just from those first 70 pages that I had never found in the other dozen or so Perl books that I have read. Of course, the rest of the book is excellent too. It explains the object oriented features of Perl very clearly, and it is full of simple, elegant and sophisticated examples. However, the author does occasionally slip in some rather arcane code. At one point he described how something could be accomplished with one simple statement, which it took me five minutes to decipher and understand. But overall, the book is excellent, and it taught me some very good lessons in programming techniques and style. I know I will be referring to this book a lot in the future.

I have recently learned the Perl programming language. In particular, my assignment was to use object Perl as much as possible. Damian Conway writes in a very witty, clear way that brings light to this complex topic. He sprinkles illustrations liberally throughout to reinforce the text. Damian never skims over any topic; rather, he covers each area very thoroughly, making it easy for all readers to understand and use object-oriented methods in Perl. Highly recommended reading!

ANYTHING by Dr. Damian Conway, by default, gets five stars. He's probably the most brilliant person I've ever met (at OSCON).I'm a Computer Scientist trained decades ago in procedural programming methods. Dr. Conway gave me the best insight into object oriented programming that I have ever encountered.

excellent book that sets a high standard for computer books in general. damian conway is the recognized expert in perl object orientated programming, and this book does a great job of both introducing and explaining these concepts in detail. must have for everyone's perl library.

A very basic introductory course for learning how to internet in a world where internet reigns. At this point in 2017, this version is a bit outdated (for example, references to Google Reader and Myspace, which are no longer in existence or relevant in context) . This is a good book, perhaps for older generations, to learn the basics of how the internet works and best ways to get going with simple tasks.

It's REALLY brave to write a book on a fluid subject like the internet. Fortunately, the gist of what is taught in this book stays the same, however some of the URLs are gone or organizations have closed. So make sure you don't buy an edition that is too far behind. Otherwise very easy to read and very thorough walk-thrus which is why I feel fine giving a 5 star. I have been using the internet since high school in the mid-90's and feel pretty confident with my searches in Google, but there is SO MUCH more organized searches out there to make your search quicker, with more authoritative sources, and more specific... and this book teaches you how to find that!

Good item, and shipper. On time and happy.

Good .

Arrived on time. Loved it

Good book

Now it teaches me to research more in the Internet.

I am an adult trying to teach myself how to play violin, as it is something I have always wanted to do, but I was never allowed to take lessons as a kid. So I bought this book hoping it would be a good place to start... but it is definitely written for children in a classroom setting. I was hoping for more how-to's, but most of that is relegated to side notes of "have your teacher show you..." but fortunately, there is Youtube, so I can deal with that. And that being said, it seems to have a decent selection of beginner scales and compositions to practice, the only thing disappointing there, is that for the first few pages they label all the notes (ie G, F#, A, etc) which is incredibly helpful for someone who hasn't attempted to read music ever, or at least in a long time, but this stops within the first few pages -- which is frustrating as it would be nice to have more practice getting the hang of the notes before having that little extra bit of aid dropped. It is also a very thin book... in the age of the internet, I kind of expected a bit more to make it worth the money vs simply printing all the information offline, which is absolutely the route I would have gone if I had easy access to a printer. So all things considered, this just gets a solid "okay" from me.

I've been a big fan of Essential Elements books. I've been studying with Hal Leonard since I was a kid. Aside from the useful information in the book, many of their books had audio CDs. This is nice for me, because I can't always understand music--even though I've learned to read it--unless I hear it. I understand basic notes, but the more complicated music baffles me in written form, so I do better playing by ear. When I decided to take up viola, I looked for Essential Elements. They don't do CDs anymore but online sites. BUT, I encountered something that initially was discouraging. This company assumes most of its users are enrolled in classes. I guess it is primarily used by music teachers. Though I had a student activation code, I needed a teacher to register me on the site first. The problem is, I am self-study...so initially it looked like I wouldn't have access to the web site. I did find another web address in the back of the book that had the lessons for the book but lacked some of the bells and whistles of their main site. The main site has the ability to record and has other helpful features. Their secondary site is just a library. However, I contacted the company, and they set up an account for me--so now I have access to the main site. If you are self-study like me, you will have to contact them--but they are very nice about it. If you are under thirteen, your parents will need to do it. Otherwise, they just need to know what instrument you are playing and that you are over thirteen years of age.

This has been an excellent product to purchase for an adult beginner violinist. I am really happy with this. I have been practicing for only 2 weeks now and I am learning very quickly and am more than half way through this book. I enjoyed Essential Elements for Strings Book 1 so much that I decided that I need Book 2 and Book 3, and they will be arriving in the next few days. This is an excellent book for learning the violin. It really helps.

Fantastic book to learn the violin--for those (of us) who've never even touched a violin! This books gets started at the “basics”—learning notes by plucking (pizzicato) first and then bowing. I love the fact that the buyers of this book have on-line access to background music to play-along with (beginning violin karaoke!)—it feels great to be part of a “band”! The only thing missing is a “how-to” on how each song should “sound” when played (music theory). Problem solved—I went to YouTube, and Patrick Murphy (PhD) plays each song in this book, which has been a HUGE help in learning the timing and mechanics of each song. I am also taking violin lessons, and my teacher is using this book. This book, access to the background music, and YouTube has helped reinforce the lessons in this book—and I am really enjoying learning the violin!

The online stuff looks like it would be great, but I was unable to use it. I take private lessons, so I am not in a class. I bought the teachers manual to give to my teacher. Hopefully, I will be able to use it after he sets an account up. What good is buying a book with an online interactive account, if you can't access the account?

My son is 10 years old. He just began viola lessons and has never played an insturment before. I do not sit in on his lessons with him however sometimes during the week he has questions. I am able to look thru his book and help him with the easy to follow instructions on finger placement, descriptions on what the different notations are within the music, etc.I appreciate that this book has songs he recognizes, such as Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star". The fact that he already knows the melody helps him to hear when his finger is slightly misplaced and he is able to make the adjustment himself. I think that's one of the biggest battles for him as a beginning viola student, so these familiar songs are a great feature to this book. I'm glad his music teacher suggested we purchase it for his lessons!

Ha, see what I did there with the headline, anyways when I was learning the sax in middle school we had these books so when I bought my violin I knew this would be very important to help me learn. I gotta say I'm very happy with what I got for such a (what I consider at least) low price. There were essentially no marks on the book and it definitely makes learning my new violin much easier. Especially without a tutor. The instructions and songs you learn are easy to understand and not as humiliating as say Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (although honestly that song is in the book too, but there are many other songs so you could even skip some). The book has little review type practices. Like writing in what certain notes are after you've learned them to help you remember. All in all a good buy worth the money.

Does not read like poetry as you would expect. It is written more in the style of written responsed by some of the people who may have known Jesus or witnessed him during his life (supposed). It is not claiming to be true, eyewitnesd accounts. Think more of drawing inspiration from scripture and if some characters or conversations were approached in a varying way how they would relay. The way in which so many voices capture the essence of Jesus’ impact on the world is unmatched. It would be best to have a pretty good grasp on the bible before you read this or the characters and what they claim will not be as enriched for the reader. I happened to make many connections and it wad very rewarding, I am a bible minor student.

Kalil Gibran has given us a fictional account of a very real subject - Jesus. Not from HIS point of view, but from those who may have simply passed him on the road, to the recollections of his blessed mother, Mary...and many others, who are but mentioned only by name or profession, in the Bible. This is a 'remembrance' of his life some 20 years after his leaving this world - from both those who loved him, AND hated him. Again, Gibran gives us a view of how the world can be changed by a single life, for all of time.Though fictional in source - "Jesus The Son Of Man" gives a very real and true account of the Christ - from the heart of a very Christ-loving author. High marks for one of the best of Gibran's books. Read "The Prophet", too. Paul G.

Gibran's reputation as a poet and profound thinker is confirmed in this book.He employs history, Biblical text and his imagination to conjure 'interviews' with folks who may have been intimate with Jesus or affected by His presence from a distance. His insight is exceptionally believable and he takes you on a journey that is both mystical and practical with the varying points of view. The positives are for believers primarily, and one will be filled with a sense of awe and intimacy toward Jesus. Nevertheless the voice of skeptics is heard, though in the minority, but it is given due attention. The downside may be for those who are not so poetically inclined. Khalil's voice through those who admire Jesus is extremely metaphoric and it may be lost on those who need a more 'down to earth' description of feelings, emotions and attitudes. I felt at times that the discourses were perhaps too symbolic, though one understood the implication of the experience of encountering Jesus as beyond words. In the end one is left understanding Jesus' impact more but hungering to know Him in a way that is more understandable than the sometimes amorphous descriptions by Gibran's characters. The interviews are fairly short and this makes it a manageable read for the most 'unbookish' of us.All the same a great read and a classic anyone should have.

My one star is not for the content; Gibran's writing is exquisite! But this copy is not worth a dime. The art and wood blocks have been eliminated, but besides that, the white space between the 77 vignettes has been deleted. Chapters and titles run on and on without breaks or any designation. Our book group has found it almost impossible to make sense of. I do have one old beautiful copy ... which I will treasure all the more. With it I could guide the other 9 readers through there own bewildering copies. This cheap edition insults both the author and the reader.

While the author did not claim that his book is spiritually inspired, reading it will confirm that the author must have meditated a lot on the person of Jesus, and his effects on those around him.Free from dogma, tradition and mainstream interpretation, the author could freely interpret the words and deeds of Jesus from his personal perspective. If you are interested in the person of Jesus, this book will give you a fresh perspective of him.

This is a beautiful fictional work. I was hoping for more historical, cultural and factual information. Poetic and definitely fictional.

A series of short stories and poems that highlight the understanding of Jesus held ft his followers and enemies. Many of the stories and insights are highly illuminating, particularly those of his enemies, as they force us to consider facets of Jesus that we might not have before.

This is my second favorite book in the whole wide world other than the Bible. If you're going to only own one Khalil Gibran book in your lifetime make it this one!

This author has done a lovely job of describing Norse mythology. When I was a child, I devoured a book on Norse myths, and these stories--from my Kindle version--are very familiar. But there was new material. There are some sexual aspects that of course did not appear in my child's book. There were new stories that I hadn't heard at all, like the story of Rolf Krake. I appreciated the author's listing of sources, which I shall probably never read, but they indicated that he had done his research and gave me confidence in what I was reading. It was also interesting to compare these stories with those that underlay Wagner's Ring Cycle operas; some things were familiar, some were not (for example, the operas begin and end with the Rhine maidens.) I was also intrigued at the end with the new world that resulted after Ragnarok. (The author suggests that since an original author, Snorri Sturlesson, was a Christian, he may have incorporated Christian beliefs into his writing, possibly like this new world. Of course, that belief may really have been present.) It is also interesting to compare Norse mythology with writings of, say, J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis, who constructed other fictional epics. There are not many similarities, but a few.

A wonderful introduction to Norse Mythology. I would have given it 5 stars, but there are a few misspellings and a few places where the wrong names are used. For the price, you learn a lot about the creation of the universe, the gods, giants, dwarves, and other Norse mythology.

I found this book very interesting. These myths about Norse gods were really fascinating and complex. Matt makes the connections to each story as clear as possible, but since some primary sources are missing some questions remain. Which make reading mythology so much fun.

I love these series books, and this is interesting and cause to dig further for information and the bigger picture! My first Norse reading, but definitely not my last!

Kindle Unlmited, look below at top portion of list, will see other mythology books starting with this one, some have Norse in general separately and in collection, etcExplore Captivating Myths of the Norse Gods and HeroesThe stories from Norse mythology linger in our culture today. Four days of our week are named after members of the Norse pantheon (Tyr, Woden (Odin), Thor and Frigg). Wagner’s Ring Cycle has kept one version of one of the great Norse stories alive in the minds of music lovers. Readers of modern fantasy will find many echoes of the Norse tales as well. Something in these old and puzzling stories still has the power to move and unsettle us and to inspire new acts of creation. This book will give you a brief introduction to some of the best-known myths found in the primary sources. This book includes a glossary of names in the back in case you need help keeping track of a rather large cast of characters. Enjoy your explorations!Within this book, you'll find the following Norse myths and topics coveredThe Creation of the Worlds - The Building of Asgard - Why Odin Has One Eye and Tyr Has One Hand - The Mead of Poetry - Loki the Thief - Love and Trouble - Thor the Bride - Thor’s Adventures in Utgard -Odin the Host and Odin the Guest - Andvari’s Curse - Regin and Sigurd - Sigurd and the Dragon - The Marriage of Sigurd - Brynhild’s Betrayal - The Death of Sigurd - The Passing of Balder - Ragnarök - Grace Note: The Story of Rolf KrakeNorse Mythology: A Captivating Guide to Norse Folklore Including Fairy Tales, Legends, Sagas and Myths of the Norse Gods and HeroesRoman Mythology: A Captivating Guide to Roman Gods, Goddesses, and Mythological Creatures (Classical Mythology)Celtic Mythology: A Captivating Guide to the Gods, Sagas and BeliefsNorse Mythology: Captivating Stories of the Gods, Sagas and Heroes (Norse Mythology - Egyptian Mythology - Greek Mythology Book 1)Egyptian Mythology: Captivating Stories of the Gods, Goddesses, Monsters and Mortals (Norse Mythology - Egyptian Mythology - Greek Mythology Book 2)Greek Mythology: A Captivating Guide to the Ancient Gods, Goddesses, Heroes, and Monsters (Norse Mythology - Egyptian Mythology - Greek Mythology Book 3)Mythology: A Captivating Guide to Greek Mythology, Egyptian Mythology, and Norse Mythology (Norse Mythology - Egyptian Mythology - Greek Mythology Book 4Greek Mythology: A Fascinating Guide to Understanding the Ancient Greek Religion with Its Gods, Goddesses, Monsters and Mortals (Greek Mythology - Norse Mythology - Egyptian Mythology Book 1)Norse Mythology: A Fascinating Guide to Understanding the Sagas, Gods, Heroes, and Beliefs of the Vikings (Greek Mythology - Norse Mythology - Egyptian Mythology Book 2)Egyptian Mythology: A Fascinating Guide to Understanding the Gods, Goddesses, Monsters, and Mortals (Greek Mythology - Norse Mythology - Egyptian Mythology Book 3Maya Civilization: A Captivating Guide to Maya History and Maya Mythology (Mayan Civilization, Aztecs and Incas Book 1)Aztec: A Captivating Guide to Aztec History and the Triple Alliance of Tenochtitlan, Tetzcoco, and Tlacopan (Mayan Civilization, Aztecs and Incas Book 2)Ancient Civilizations: A Captivating Guide to Mayan History, the Aztecs, and Inca EmpireAncient Greece: A Captivating Guide to Greek History Starting from the Greek Dark Ages to the End of AntiquityAncient Egypt: A Captivating Guide to Egyptian History, Ancient Pyramids, Temples, Egyptian Mythology, and Pharaohs such as Tutankhamun and CleopatraWorld History: Captivating Stories of Events That Shaped Our Planet (Forgotten History, History of the World, History Books)African American History: A Captivating Guide to the People and Events that Shaped the History of the United StatesHaitian Revolution: A Captivating Guide to the Abolition of SlaveryBlack History: A Captivating Guide to African American History and the Haitian RevolutionThe Culper Ring: A Captivating Guide to George Washington's Spy Ring and its Impact on the American RevolutionAlexander Hamilton: A Captivating Guide to one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of AmericaAaron Burr: A Captivaing Guide to the Life of Aaron Burr and the Most Famous Duel in American HistoryThe Duel: A Captivating Guide to the Lives of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron BurrNikola Tesla: A Captivating Guide to the Life of a Genius InventorThomas Edison: A Captivating Guide to the Life of a Genius InventorTesla Vs Edison: A Captivating Guide to the War of the Currents and the Life of Nikola Tesla and Thomas EdisonWorld War 2: A Captivating Guide from Beginning to End (The Second World War and D Day Book 1)D Day: A Captivating Guide to the Battle for Normandy (The Second World War and D Day Book 2)The Second World War: A Captivating Guide to World War II and D DayWinston Churchill: A Captivating Guide to the Life of Winston S. Awesome!

Good book. Captivating stories.

I liked this book. I've always been interested in the differences between mythologies. I think it could have been a bit longer, more in-depth. But it was well written and informative. I read a review on here before I got my copy that said it jumped around too much. I can see where someone would feel that way. It did jump, but I was able to follow it.

I have read nearly every WWII novel Reeman has written. Some of them multiple times sometimes over a period of 20 to 30 years. I like the books you might also. I have rarely been disappointed.

Good read

I like everything Douglas Reeman has written! He makes naval action real whether it is with Bolitho or a myriad of other heroes!

Great book and well written except for the last battle which was confusing and hard to picture as a reader. If not for that I would have given it 5 stars.

Great story and characters

I liked the action and the cumupence of theCommander who was punched by an equal in rank as a result of the Commanders lip.

Very good

Prairie View A&M University, today an academic Juggernaut in the heart of a geographic area of explosive growth (Cypress, Texas, 30 miles from downtown Houston) is part of an untold story in America. While America, in the 1950's and 1960's was in the throes of a "new normal," of segregation, oppression, nullification, and sometimes brutality against its dark -skinned citizens, an "American normal" was being played out on the campus of this diamond in the "backyard," a la Napoleon Hill's "Acres of Diamonds," of Houston Texas. During that period, preceded by the contents narrated in Dr. Woolfolk's book, a new American normal was being lived out. Black students from the farms and plantations of Texas were being educated to become Medical Doctor's, attorneys, educators, engineers, nurses, Army officers, and business persons of the highest caliber in America. Dr. Woolflolk provides the dark background to an illustrious part of American history that should become a part of every American school child's history curriculum. The facts and data supporting and illustrating the struggle of a few to educate black students, young and old are carefully detailed. It reveals the whites, for reasons particularly their own, and blacks, for completely different reasons, wanted an educated, literate black population. The reasons for whites to educate blacks was to nullify the effects of white southerners desire to continue a system, politically and legally abolished, that held blacks as property and chattel. The reasons blacks wanted to be educated was to become equal with whites in the public, social, political, and economic arena. The Book "Prairie View," By Dr. George Ruble Woolfolk, chronicles and illuminates American History, through the lens of a Prairie View A&M University, in a way only a gentleman scholar could. He was my history teacher in my undergraduate days. I can attest that he wrote his book not as a protest, but to provide an accurate historical underpinning for what is today an economic and academic juggernaut in the middle of a nowhere that is now only 10 miles from an area of explosive growth in population and economic power. I thank Dr. Woolfolk for publishing this book at a time when a person such as he, a little known black history professor at a very forgettable named college for black students, could not get an article published in any American academic journal or popular magazine at the time. Thanks also goes to the publisher, Pageant Press, for publishing the work. This book is out of print at present and I may have secured the only available copy in America. Woohoo!!!!!

From Publishers Weekly

When a Chinese fighter collided with an American EP-3E Aries II reconnaissance plane on April 1, 2001, it was merely the most recent incident in a long string dating back to the end of WWII. Burrows (Deep Black), a professor of journalism at New York University and founder and director of its Science and Environmental Reporting Program, uses a host of personal interviews among his many sources, and details for the first time the secret American reconnaissance missions against the Soviet Union, China, North Korea and North Vietnam. The specter of Communist aggression coupled with the threat of nuclear war meant that America had to have accurate knowledge of enemies and their military capabilities. But Burrows also examines the issue of intelligence gathering from the Soviet viewpoint. Having been attacked by erstwhile ally Germany without provocation and having seen the atomic bombs dropped on Japan, the Soviets were understandably edgy when American planes began buzzing their borders and occasionally flying directly over their airspace. Frustrated, the Soviets struck back. From 1950 to 1969, Soviet fighters shot down 16 American planes in situations that resulted in loss of life. An appendix provides a chronological listing of these planes and the names of the crew members who perished. Most planes were converted bombers or tankers, crammed with all sorts of electronic eavesdropping devices. The whole game was generally called "ferreting." Nikita Khrushchev's joy when U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers was captured after his plane was downed on May 1, 1960, is understandable. The Soviets announced the capture, but the Americans never apologized directly and still haven't. The ultimate tragedy in this cat and mouse game befell the families of the missing airmen who were often executed if captured alive. Burrows is to be congratulated for superb research and stellar writing in this first look behind the secret curtain of intelligence gathering. 16 pages of photos not seen by PW. (Oct.)Forecast: This book, driven by interest in the still-fresh Chinese incident and by its pwn merits, should be a breakaway bestseller. From Library Journal

When World War II ended, the Cold War began. Its frontline warriors were the pilots and crews who flew air reconnaissance missions against Communist-bloc countries. For this purpose, bombers were converted to aerial spy work, often with disastrous results for the crews. As crews were lost or shot down, an effort was finally made to improve the planes and organize air reconnaissance into one unit the Strategic Air Command (SAC). Formed under Curtis LeMay, it provided not only air reconnaissance but immediate military response to any country that might attack the United States. Higher-flying aircraft, like the U-2, made air reconnaissance safer for crews, but surveillance with total safety wasn't achieved until satellites were launched. Burrows (journalism, New York Univ.; Deep Black: Space Espionage and National Security) tells the story of Cold War air reconnaissance with emphasis on the individuals involved, the sacrifices they made, and the way the U.S. government turned a blind eye to those who served. A fascinating book that public and academic libraries will want to purchase, especially in view of the recent spy plane episode with China. Grant A. Fredericksen, Illinois Prairie Dist. A document of how the US government treated the patriots, people who believed in the USA, did the mission and paid the price, left to rot in a communist prison gulag and telling their families "we do not know what happened", until we know, you can not collect his insurance. A great book on how "you are expendable" and we will not take care of your family too, now fly the mission.

A very extensive and readable coverage of an area of conflict largely overlooked in warfare, both cold and hot. The author's research into the subject is detailed and as he states, limited to a specific period largely - the Cold War from the 50s' to the 70s'. He makes few errors that I can detect, apart from his coverage of the shooting down of the RB50G in 1950 off the Soviet Far East by MIG17s - the MIG17 didn't come into squadron service until 1952 - the attackers were MIG15s. A very small point in a well written book

Outstanding, in-depth review of the Secret air recon missions that probed the Communist Countries during the Cold War. These missions were conducted by many Western Nations, but mainly the British and American Military, Using every type of aircraft available from civilian airliners to the U-2 and SR-71 Spyplanes. A very well written accounting of the various types of missions conducted over a 60 year span.

Excellent reviews on a large number of shootdown incidents that occured during the cold war years along with the background behind the vigilent mentality of the period. Most of these encounters were NOT highly publisized at the time because these missions were highly classified at the time and even people involved on these flights were not privy to what their fellow colleages were really up to unless they had a real need to know. A lot of these flights are now declassified and this book along with "The Price of Vigilance" and other such books are finally shedding light on those dangerous missions. A very good overview of what went on during that period of history!

An introduction into a semi-secret world the average American knows nothing about, this is (a part of) the true story of aerial confrontations between the USA and USSR that occasionally made the Cold War anything but cold. An excellent overview of what really went on. And, Yes. It could happen again.

The Cold War was a lot warmer than most of us think it was. There were brave pilots and airmen who penetrated Soviet Skies to look beyond the border to find out all they could. And before the U-2 and SR-71, they used ordinary bomber, cargo and fighter planes... and some never made it home.We owe all of them a great debt for risking their lives for ours. This is their story.

Author William Burrows sets the standard in describing America's intelligence collection efforts during the Cold War. Aviators and flight crews took exceptional risks and made great sacrifices to give America a continuous edge. William Burrows has no parallel in the military aviation genre. This is must reading for all military aviators.

This book completes any collection for history of US surveillance flights over Russia and China. Very riveting. Recommend to anyone interested in the cold war and the price our air crews paid.

I was so excited when I saw that The Fever Code was out. My kids and I are huge fans of the Maze Runner Series (they are ages 14 and 12 now), that we all couldn't wait to read it. I am the faster reader, so I read it first. This is a great addition to the Maze Runner Series. I felt that the series was not complete, unanswered questions, so I was hoping that this book would help fill in the gaps. I can honestly say that this book was amazing. I couldn't put it down, the book flows very quickly. If you have read the Maze Runner Series, then you will want to read the Fever Code also. For instance, if you were like me, and wondered how Thomas reacted differently to those in the maze (friends right away with Chuck, but didn't get along with Gally), then The Fever Code will fill in those missing links. It is a great addition to the series, and for me, it made the series complete. Love this series!Spoiler Alert: The book starts off with the story of Newt, and how he was taken to the maze, even though he was not immune to the flare. The next chapter, and from then on, focuses on Thomas's story and point of view. I wish that there would have been more stories of they other boys, like Alby, Minho, and Chuck. I think this would have added to the book. I did notice was discrepancy in this book, compared to the first book. In the Fever Code, it listed 40 members going to the maze at once, including Alby, Minho, and Newt, but this is not the same as mentioned in the original Maze Runner. I was disappointed about this, but it might not be that noticeable for others. I will discuss it with my kids, after they finish reading the book, to see if they noticed any discrepancies themselves, or if I'm making a big deal out of something small. This book helps show Thomas's personality, which helps to develop him into the leader that he shows in the other books. I have to admit, the ending caught me off guard. I was a huge fan of Teresa, always rooting for her, in the other books. After reading this ending, I was very disappointed in her.

This is the last book in the series-book five. In order for the book to make sense, the trilogy has to be read and then The Kill Order before The Fever Code. This book explains so much, is suspenseful, and has a huge twist. This was the best book I ever read and finished it in two days. Once done with The Maze Runner series, I recommend checking out the two other series by James Dashner. The one I'm reading now is called The Eye of Minds. Another series he wrote starts with the book The 13th Reality. Happy reading!

This was such a great read; satisfying and fun. I finished it all in one sitting and is the perfect bridge between the first prequel and the first book: The Maze Runner. I enjoyed the twists and turns and plot development so much... it's made me want to go back and start at the chronological beginning to get the complete picture (I finished all of the other books years ago).

This is a great conclusion to the series. It answers so many questions. Must read for fans of the Maze Runner!

The Fever Code by James DashnerWow, just a horribly tragic story. Terrifically told, this additional prequel to the Maze Runner series is compelling. I have not read the series previously, so I am looking forward to getting into the Maze itself. I have not been able to unravel all of the lies and misdirections, so I only hope that Dashner has done it for me. I enjoyed this very much.

James Dashner is SUCH a wonderful author. There have been many times a prequel has fallen short of my expectations- they tend to be less interesting and more "telling than showing" in nature. However, this was amazing. Dashner could have easily made this the first book in the series (rather than a prequel) and maintained his following for the rest of the series. It was exciting, answered quite a few questions, and you just learn so much about the process of the Maze being created and where exactly Thomas and Teresa's heads were at throughout the whole process. There's just soooo much you learn about all these characters and seeing the beginning of the maze from another perspective is amazing. Overall, I totally enjoyed it and would highly recommend!

I definitely recommend reading this book AFTER the rest of the series. It will spoil some things if you read it as a prequel. As soon as I picked up the series, I was hooked. It's a very nice read that wasn't too easy or confusing to follow. This book tied loose ends, and it was nice reading it afterwards to look back and be like "Oh! That did happen!". I would start with Kill Order and work your way through the series, ending with this book.

The first 3 Maze Runners were amazing, but the 4th and 5th books were dreadful. There were times where i had no idea what was going on in the book. I found myself struggling to attempt to finish chapters and at times i had to reread parts. I dont even fully get what the story was supposed to be about! Sad compared to his first few books, it seems like this one was written just to make the extra buck.
