This is the second McLaren book I've read, and I have the same issue with both - he has a good idea, he states it clearly at the outset, he spends a chapter or two doing a good job setting it up....and then he just gets lost. In reading both books I had the exact same experience of being really excited, going along with him for the ride for several chapters, and then finding myself just tossing the thing aside, because it got bogged down. So to be fair, I have to say I did not finish this book. I TRIED - mightily. But after really making his point in the first couple of chapters, teasing you that he would develop them further in the remainder of the book, he simply didn't. So I left.

I liked this book a lot. McLaren is very warm to those that would disagree with him, and many of his ideas are very compelling. He makes the case for a new "kind" of Christian identity, which he calls "strong and benevolent" in contrast to the "strong but hostile" style of hardline Conservative Christianity, and the "weak but benevolent" style of the more liberal/unitarian beliefs.I think this book is worth reading regardless of your beliefs or views. McLaren's challenges in this book are very needed in today's world, and I found myself regularly challenged by it. He also really seems to live it out. However, I will say that this book is directed to Christians. The book title might be a little misleading - the book is largely about Christianity, and doesn't spend much more than a chapter talking about the specifics of Islam or Judaism.Personally there are many aspects of Christianity that I hold dearly such as the afterlife, and the problem of suffering apart from human evil, or spiritual formation that are either unaddressed or de-emphasized by McLaren. But no book is complete. I enjoyed the book a lot, and I think it will help me be a better neighbor.

Why do we think that our beliefs are supreme over others' beliefs? And based on those differences, oftentimes, results in the most violent and offensive actions. Beliefs always transfer into decisions and then actions. The kind of God you believe in, whether loving and benevolent, or violent and retributive, determines how you treat "the other".Brian gives a very insightful perspective of our historical decisions that have not always resulted in benevolence but rather conflict and murder. We should walk the road with benevolence toward our fellow Hindu, Muslim, and Buddhist to work together to help the poor, the needy, the outcasts, as well as making sound decisions about our use of this beautiful planet, keeping in mind how our decisions and actions might affect individuals' well being across the globe.

"To accept and love God, must I betray my neighbor of another religion? To accept and love my neighbor, must I betray the God of my religion?"The past couple of decades have been exceptional when it comes to religious diversity. Christianity is no longer the cultural norm in America. Incidents across the world have highlighted our many differences. How do Christians respond to Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, and so on?Brian McLaren's appropriately titled book Why Did Jesus, Moses, the Buddha, and Mohammed Cross the Road? attempts to refocus our goals as followers of Christ. From a purely historical and literary perspective, Jesus is a very interesting character. He spends almost his entire ministry with societal outcasts while specifically avoiding the religious authority of the day. Now fast forward over two thousand years, where do we find the followers of Jesus? Are they more concerned about loving people or staying in line with Christian values?McLaren divides this book into four sections. The Crisis of Christian Identity. Identify yourself as a Christian and you will unfortunately be labeled with several negative qualities. Regrettably, most of these perceived qualities have been earned by well-intended but severely misguided Christians. Just like the Pharisees found in the Gospels, Christians today have become more concerned about staying holy and not sinning that we forget to love our brothers and sisters on earth. To be strong Christians, we need humble hearts. To be strong Christians, we need to focus on loving others as an act of loving God. We will definitely receive reprimands from the Christian mainstream but as McLaren reminds us, "Crucifixion happens, not at the hand of others, but Us."The Doctrinal Challenge and The Liturgical Challenge. These two sections were a bit weak in my opinion. I understand McLaren's desire to refocus our doctrines and liturgy so that we focus more on others and the love that God wants us to show. I liked the areas where I felt like he was correcting doctrinal misunderstandings, but I didn't like how he tried to change the entire focus of a tradition or sacrament. See chapter on baptism. I certainly don't disagree with his changes or adjustments, I just don't think the changes are the solution. There was not much tie in to the whole theme of the book. The Missional Challenge. The best way to describe the challenge of being a Christian in a multifaith world can be summed up by Gandhi. One, be like Christ. Two, don't tone done your message. Three, center on love. Four, study non-Christian religions. In conclusion, this is great book on religious diversity and more importantly, loving others. This is the book I think Rob Bell was trying to write when he penned Love Wins. Brian McLaren does a great job writing in simple and straightforward terms. He does not try to throw Greek words at you to prove a theological point. I look forward to reading more from McLaren in the future.

Excellent book for our time when there is so much hatred for people of other faiths. Mr McLaren shows how we can connect with other faiths without diluting our own faith. He shows us how to give compassion to others and to see God at work in other faiths. I have always believed that God shows himself to all in different ways. He does not despise others as they are His children also. Remember the story of Abraham, Sarah and her servant Hagar. Sarah was jealous of Hagar as Ismael was the first born of their family and Isaac the second born. But God did not desert Ismael and Hagar but promised them blessings in the future. We have to look at others and see God in them. This is the way to bring peace to earth by joining together for the good of all.

Another great medieval mystery by the master of medieval mysteries: Paul Doherty (aka PC Doherty). This is book number 16, and newest book, in the Sorrowful Mysteries of Brother Athelstan.Former soldier, present priest, and brilliant detective, Brother Athelstan solves the most complex of mysteries that occur in and around late 14th century London. It is 1381, London, England, and a mystery from over 50 years earlier rears its ugly head plunging diminutive, Dominican priest and detective, Brother Athelstan, into a dangerous search that could cost him his life.In this latest case, young King Richard II has asked the Church to canonize his great-grandfather, King Edward II, a man who was forcibly toppled from his throne and thrown into prison only to be murdered in a most horrifying way by his wife, Queen Isabella and her lover, Mortimer, and their followers. Or was he killed? Did he perhaps escape? The case of King Edward II (died 1327) is a mystery that to the present day has never been truly resolved. Modern scholars doubt the story of the King's method of murder, but no one is for certain if he died that day or not. And if not, then who was buried in his tomb?In this novel, a delegation from Rome has arrived at Blackfriars, the Dominican mother house in England, to investigate the king's life and death. And, if the facts bear out, then recommend sainthood.Their task is complicated by the peasant rebel armies who want the present king, all foreigners, and anyone who sides with them dead. The streets run red with blood of the murdered. Then, the murders began to strike the monks at Blackfriars.Prior Anselm calls on Athelstan to solve the murders. With his good friend and Royal Coroner, Sir John Cranston, Brother Athelstan begins to unweave the plot and the twists and turns will leave you in great anticipation. But, the path is dangerous, and very early into his investigation, attempts are made on Brother Athelstan's life. Despite these threats to his life, he will plod on and discover the truth to the present murders. And the mystery of King Edward II? You must read to find out.Brother Athelstan will not fail, and he does it all without CSI, rather using his own powers of deduction. A much more satisfying entertainment than TV and special effects could ever offer. You won't be disappointed in this book.

I had been eagerly awaiting this novel: the possibility of Athelstan's "participation" in the Peasant Revolt had been foreshadowed in at least the previous three novels. Unfortunately, the novel focuses far too much on the fate of Edward II. Don't get me wrong; that is indeed a fascinating subject, but not during the Peasant Revolt. The premise of Athelstan sitting around debating past events about Edward's possible escape to Italy simply does not make sense, especially because the men of Saint Erconwald's have disappeared. I would expect Athelstan to search assiduously for his parishioners rather than to debate the minutiae of an Edward II mystery. Admittedly, some might find the investigation into Edward a satisfying connection with Athelstan's duties of a monk, but I found it distracting.

The moment finally arrived in The Great Revolt. It was worthy of all the build up in the previous several novels with Brother Athelstan. I enjoy All the noted characters in this novel and was pleased to find there are still surprises to be found in these characters. This is a great read.

Another fabulous historical mystery with Brother Athelstan and his best friend, Sir John Cranston. They are threatened with the uprising against Richard II. Sir John remains the King's defender. Athelstan continues as solver of mysterious murders, all surrounding the true fate of Edward II, 50 years before.

Paul Doherty is a master of the medieval mystery. His Brother Athelstan ferrets out the solutions to often complex problems. The descriptions of the period brings it to life.

Actually it was a bit of a disappointment You mentioned the great revolt and so much when it came it wasn't so great after all sorry I do love your work and have read most of your books keep it up thank you for the gift of your talent you share with us

Anyone who loves history through eyes who might have been will adore this series. Spellbinding, hard to put down, leaves one anxious for more.

The dreaded revolt is finally here. Athelstan is caught between his beloved parishioners and his fellow Dominicans, between the past and the present. Don't miss it.
