Review

“Particularly in today’s America, where science, religion, and politics seem so inflammatory, Alumkal’s calm voice of reason has much to offer. Recommended for all libraries.”-Catholic Library World"Alumkal shows that hostility toward science -- including a kind of fearful contempt toward scientists -- is fairly palpable."-Inside Higher Ed "Paranoid Science offers valuable insights about the ability of religious and scientific interests to rally public support and potentially influence public policy. It will be of interest to sociologist who study religion, science, social movements and to those interested in any of the four historical episodes that organize the book’s empirical chapters."-Sociology of Religion"Particularly in today's America, where science, religion, and politics seem so inflammatory, Alumkal's calm voice of reason has much to offer."-Catholic Library World“Alumkal’s book is troubling and eye-opening.”-Church & State"A small but highly organized network of conservative Christians maintains a successful pseudo-scientific campaign to challenge established scientific topics including evolution, sexual orientation, bioethics, and climatology that they find threatening to their worldview. Alumkal’s unflinching critical analysis of their popular writings and educational media provides an excellent window into the political culture and theological motivations, mindsets and machinations within this movement. Fit for the times, Paranoid Science is engaging reading that elucidates the extent to which religious motivations can distort scientific inquiry for political ends." -Jerry Z. Park,Associate Professor of Sociology, Baylor University"Through extensive research, Alumkal provides a rich, nuanced, and detailed view of mid-20th-century American evangelicalism’s right-wing political expression and its often dangerous impact on science in the service of the common good. His conclusions indicate that when such a powerful paranoia cannot be deescalated, it must be contained. Education and persuasion are the tools for change, and Alumkal’s book succeeds in both respects."-Publishers Weekly“This is a volume for those who seek a better understanding of the US’s contemporary cultural conflict.”-Choice"Paranoid Science is a reliable and insightful guide to the fever swamps of evangelical science denial. A gripping, disturbing, and important contribution." -Glenn Branch,Deputy Director, National Center for Science Education

The book is excellent, well argued, footnoted, and easy to understand. But, it is not simple. But, if you want to know why the Republican Party takes the positions it does on evolution, school choice and vouchers, and opposition to climate change science, this book provides an explanation rooted in the Christian Right's theology, or the theology of white, conservative, evangelical Christians who believe in an inerrant, literally true Bible. He goes beyond to show how their theology links up with conspiracy theories, thus the "paranoid" from Hofstadter.

This book exposes the imperfections and hidden fears behind the christian right's campaign against science. It is must reading for those who wonder why these religious groups oppose science.

Timely book and well written. Thought provoking.

Liked least: The author claimed to be a teacher in a (supposedly Christian) seminary, yet argued against what Evangelical authors wrote, with little quoting of Scripture to either give a basis for the Evangelical argument or his argument against how the Evangelicals interpret Scripture. That seemed to be complete research.Liked next least: The often cumbersome academic approach to the work, like a thesis that is only supposed to be understood by a select elite.Liked most: Quantifying one person's disdain for Evangelicals, however poorly camouflaged as an unbiased work.

This is just a review of the book title and the book's three paragraph summary. The author uses the three B's of the left-wing: Bombast, Bluster, and Baloney, with a liberal addition of straw man arguments to confuse the issues. The title panders to those who slavishly want to believe the lie that being against Darwinism is the same thing as denying reality. So right off the bat, the title is guilty of the fallacy of stating an unproven (and oft-disproved) theory as being true. Then the summary starts off with characterizing the conflict as being "high-profile clashes with science" by the Christian Right. No. That's throwing more of the three B's at the reader. The clash is between bad science masquerading as truth vs actual science. The scientific arguments against Darwinism are fundamental and overwhelming. The arguments in favor of it are a mountainous house of cards propped up, not with good science but rather with a zealous desire to believe in it at all costs. The summary continues to mischaracterize the issue by saying that the book provides a "comprehensive background on the war on science." The thousands of creation scientists and ID scientists would, I think, take great offense at that statement. It's not a war on science. It's a war against the non-science of Darwinism. The summary finishes by again characterizing the issue as the war on reality, again tacitly promoting the idea that Darwinism is proven reality. Just about nothing could be further from the truth.

Paranoid science is about conservative Christians that challenge what the author calls established scientific topics, including evolution, ex-gays, bioethics, and climatology. The author, an Associate Professor of Sociology of Religion at the Iliff School of Theology in Denver, CO, repeatedly calls those who believe that there exists evidence for design in the natural word, those who left the gay lifestyle, those who criticize the current climate change projections, and persons who have valid concerns about the brave new world of genetics paranoid. The name calling gets monotonous after a while, and detracts from the authors major points. He mocks the conclusion that academia is intolerant of conservatives and those who fall into the above categories. Some data sheds some light on this. For example, the ratio of liberal to conservative professors has profoundly changed from a ratio of 4 to 1 a few years ago to 17 to 1 today. An excellent documentation of the problem is the New York Times bestselling author Dinesh D’Souza who discusses this in his new book, The Big Lie.Furthermore, Attorney General Jeff Sessions issued government-wide religious liberty guidance on October 6, 2017, granting deference to First Amendment freedoms. The 25-page memo outlined 20 principles that convey the Justice Department’s view that religious freedom protections Americans have under federal law also apply to colleges. “Except in the narrowest of circumstances, no one should be forced to choose between living out his or her faith and complying with the law,” Sessions wrote. “Therefore, to the greatest extent practicable and permitted by law, religious observance should be reasonably accommodated in all government activity, including employment, contracting, and programming.” Last spring, in response to situations like what occurred at Evergreen State College, located in Olympia, Washington, a professor wrote a paper directed to students that was signed by 15 highly accomplished scholars who teach at Yale, Princeton, and Harvard. The paper was published as advice for young conservatives headed off to college, most of which are today dominated by far-left liberals, posits that self-discipline and even courage are required for survival in college. In short, the advice is “Think for yourself.” It continued, stressing that “The vice of conformism is a temptation for all faculty and students, they argue, due to a climate rife with group think, where it is “all-too-easy to allow your views and outlook to be shaped by dominant opinion” on a campus or in academia generally.… “the tyranny of public opinion” doesn’t merely discourage students from dissenting from prevailing views: “the central point of a college education is to seek truth and to learn the skills and acquire the virtues necessary to be a lifelong truth-seeker,” and “open-mindedness, critical thinking, and debate are essential to discovering the truth.” Professor Alumkal describes these thoughts signed by 15 highly accomplished scholars who teach at Yale, Princeton, and Harvard as Paranoid.

This is a Palmer/Pletsch book, which means it's pretty helpful. P/P has a reputation for high-quality sewing books, and this one is no exception. It's a fairly small book, so it doesn't go in-depth on any of the topics---it just skims them, giving you the essentials. Some of the contents:Timeline and checklist for planning your wedding.Picking the best style of wedding gown.Choosing the most flattering waistline, neckline, sleeves, and veil.Fixing the most common fit issues.Choosing and sewing with delicate bridal fabrics.Sewing tips, pressing tips.A guide to types of laces, how to sew with lace.Hemming.Sewing different types of slips or petticoats.Tips on beading.Headpieces and veils. There's lots of really great information for the bride who wants to sew her own wedding dress, although if you have no sewing experience, you'll need a good book on sewing techniques, as well. The only downside is how dated this book is. It's from 1980, and the fashion sketches are classic examples from the late 1970s. So, when the book says, "You can go with an updated/contemporary style," and then it shows a long dress with a high collar, empire waist, and belled sleeves (a typical '70s "garden-style" wedding dress), it's laughable. But if you can overlook the dated illustrations, you'll find plenty of helpful information.Four stars and recommended to anyone who's thinking about sewing their wedding dress, or wants tips on working with formal fabrics and lace.

This book was quite helpful to me as I began making the wedding gown for my granddaughter, which is currently still in progress. I have made bridesmaids dresses before, but never the bride's dress, and I was somewhat nervous about cutting into the satin and lace fabrics without a clear understanding of how to proceed with the various aspects of the dress. This book gave detailed general instruction which helped build my confidence, and gave good constructive tips. I referred to it often as I made the dress. Even though the dress is not finished yet, so far it is without flaw and looking gorgeous, thanks in part to the invaluable information in the book, which I would not have known otherwise. The book does not give a lot of specific construction detail, since every bridal dress is different, but it gives enough general information to proceed with confidence, which is what I needed.

I like the way you get walked through the process. Having never made a wedding dress before, I find that I feel much more comfortable attempting one! It may be a bit dated, but the for the most part, the process should be the same! Glad I got it, very glad!

Na.., it’s just not even exiting to look at it, plain and simple not for me.

As a novice, I always look for something that is both informative and visual. Looking through it and skimming some of the pages gave me the impression that this book meet my need.

Good sewing book

Excellent reference book for designing and making a wedding gown.

Very useful.
