About the Author

Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925) was born in the small village of Kraljevec, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now in Croatia), where he grew up (see right). As a young man, he lived in Weimar and Berlin, where he became a well-published scientific, literary, and philosophical scholar, known especially for his work with Goethe’s scientific writings. At the beginning of the twentieth century, he began to develop his early philosophical principles into an approach to systematic research into psychological and spiritual phenomena. Formally beginning his spiritual teaching career under the auspices of the Theosophical Society, Steiner came to use the term Anthroposophy (and spiritual science) for his philosophy, spiritual research, and findings. The influence of Steiner’s multifaceted genius has led to innovative and holistic approaches in medicine, various therapies, philosophy, religious renewal, Waldorf education, education for special needs, threefold economics, biodynamic agriculture, Goethean science, architecture, and the arts of drama, speech, and eurythmy. In 1924, Rudolf Steiner founded the General Anthroposophical Society, which today has branches throughout the world. He died in Dornach, Switzerland.

This book is worth the effort it will take to understand Rudolf Steiner's fundamental philosophy. Based on his PhD thesis, this book immerses the reader in 19th century German Idealist philosophy providing an illuminating context and which shaped his revolutionary look at the capacity of human beings.

Many of the books I get for my tablet or Kindle are replacements for those we have given away. All of our Steiner books and other authors on anthroposophy have new homes and needed a renewal in our library. His work centers on using a spiritual essence in all phases of life and is wonderfully inspiring.

A good read for serious thinkers who see beyond superstition into reason.

This Book is very dificult to read. Party because Steiner is obliged to defend himself, but One is dealing with a work that has been constructed to arrive at a position that can lead to imaginative, 'Moral intuitive' Thinking. And that is Quite radical. One is taken in a Journey through Westen philosophy but in a Way where you are at First left to sense how each standpoint Works in your Soul. Out of this doubt, One is taken further. Naturally Steiner gives his own position. But in Reading, all Must be tested. The book's original Titel was Philosophy of Freedom. And this Freedom is built into the work itself.

About the Author

Robert Thompson’s interest in natural history began during his childhood explorations of a large parkland estate where he grew up. He is a highly accomplished freelance natural history photographer, writer and author with a number of well-known publications to his credit on natural history and photography. He is widely acknowledged as a specialist in close-up and macro photography and was awarded a direct Fellowship by the Royal Photographic Society in 2012. He is also a Fellow of the Irish Photographic Federation. As an active conservationist and entomologist, he has worked on a number of high-profile natural history projects in his own country in conjunction with various government organisations. He also has a particular interest in dragonflies, butterflies and moths for which he has specialist knowledge. His work is widely published in the UK, Ireland and internationally, with numerous photographic credits in a wide variety of publications. He is a frequent writer and contributor to the photographic press and other natural history publications and has had several solo exhibitions of his work including the aerial landscape collection from the highly acclaimed ‘NATIONAL HISTORY OF ULSTER.' He has appeared on television and radio as a photographer, author and entomologist and been a contributor to other television programs relating to natural history and photography in Ireland. He lectures on photography and runs workshops in some of Ireland’s most picturesque locations and further afield.

I had checked this book out from the local library three times looking for reference materials. I then decided that if I used it that much, I should buy my own copy. Excellent decision.

This is a FANTASTIC book. It's very easy to read and understand, and the photographs provide the info you need to better understand macro settings for various environments. I cannot say enough good about this text. DEFINITELY worth the money. Thank you Robert Thompson.

Maybe we can be forgiven for wishing that Vaclav Havel, one of the truly amazing figures of our time, had written a more traditional, linear, and straightforward memoir of the Velvet Revolution that brought him to power, and his experiences as president, first of Czechoslovakia, then the Czech Republic. Those were years that pulsed with excitement; and if our hopes that this philosopher-president could remake the world (or his own country, even) in his own image were wildly over-optimistic, then at least his example continues to shine as evidence that history is always unpredictable, and amazing things are truly possible.But instead of a chronological incident-by-incident description of what happened in those years from 1989 onward, Havel has given us this unorothodox book which is divided in three parts: his answers to an interviewer's question (the same interviewer with whom he collaborated on the fascinating "Distrubing the Peace" just before the revolution); excerpts from his official directions to his staff while president; and more recent reflections of his life in the post-presidency (largely written while on sabbatical in the United States).There is plenty here to keep interested people enthralled: insights into contemporary world leaders; descriptions of those heady days which saw one-time "dissidents" elevated to power; explanations of why Havel acted as he did in various issues facing the Czech Republic (much of this material might be pretty much incomprehensible to many non-European readers). We also get stunningly honest glimpses into Havel's personality-- sometimes witty, often persnickety, always overly conflicted. These are, perhaps, the most fascinating aspects of the book (though, from a scholarly viewpoint, perhaps the least important). We learn that Havel loves Americans (so polite [!], he says; such good drivers [!!]; with such beautiful teeth-- though they eat these gigantic sandwiches and wash them down the Coca-cola. Interesting? Maybe. Important? Hardly.Perhaps, from the viewpoint of the student of history and politics, it would have been more useful for Havel to concetrate for a longer time on, say, his relations with Klaus; the problems of privatization; the Czech Republic's relationship to NATO or the EU. But one senses that, had he done so, we would have a much less humane (and human) book here-- and letting personality and humanity shine through beyond the expected constructs of society is what much of Havel's lifework has been about. Certainly, this book irritates at times. Sometimes, one senses that by jumping about from subject to subject, from 2005 to 1994 to 1999 to 2004 again, much is left unsaid and much escapes sufficient analysis. Certainly, there is some kind of absurdist pattern to Havel's repeating certain brief extracts from his journal (about how he wants his pike prepared; the bat in the closet; needing a linger hose for his garden) over and over again. But what that pattern is precisely escapes most of those approching this book hoping for insights into Havel's perspective on our world and its recent history."To The Castle and Back" is well worth reading for its insights into this marvelous man and his story. It was good of him to share as much of himself with us as he has. But certainly, we shouldn't be surprised that as one of the great iconoclasts of our age, he chose to do so in a manner that was completely and unmistakably his own.

A wonderful insight into the life of the man who became the last president of Czechoslovakia and the first president of the subsequent Czech Republic. Appropriately, the narration often shifts in time, keeping in rhythm with the disjointed nature of Havel’s writing style and personality. Never is there a low, dull moment in the book, for even through the seemingly most typical duties and practices in his office Havel manages to divulge more of his inner workings and feelings in an unmistakably organic manner. Each interaction, even if minuscule and insignificant, has a place in Havel’s development and his experience. The interviews provide a very intimate window into his personal thoughts and reflections as well. Overall, a fascinating read that I would recommend wholeheartedly to anyone interested in the post-communist era in Czechoslovakia and Vaclav Havel himself.

There are several fascinating aspects to this book:1. It contains insights into the difficulty of complaining about "the man" then being "the man." As a dissident he complained bitterly about how things were being run then someone said "OK, lets see if you can do better!"2. It contains insight into the "eastern" mind. This book was like sitting around with my Russian friends over several bottles of vodka and having a giant circular stream of consciousness discussion of everything from politics to romance. Everything is in no particular order yet constantly connected to everything.3. The idea that a good life is a large portion of martyrdom flows through this book. Again this is perhaps something of an eastern mindset. He draws deep meaning from his realization that his job is impossible and his work will fall apart yet it is his duty and his glory to continue.

Since I cam from Czechslovakia, the part that is now the Czech Republic I was very interested what Havel had to say. I have admired him for a long time, and since he was a writer to begin with the book is well written with occasional glimpses of humor.

I like the way in which this book pieced together Vaclav's life experiences, his perspective on things & how the Czech Republic came to be. Well told, well written, easy to follow & read.

I love his candor! Would that a U.S. President would risk writing his (or her?) memoir with such finesse and honesty. Via his description of people, events, his perception of his achievements, his errors/failures, and was deeply impressed by him and grew very fond of him; that said, I never had personal contact with him, but if that had occurred, it may have confirmed my feelings or disappointed me.

To those of us deeply involved in Czech history or culture, this is an essential book. It's a fascinating insider's look at the choices a dissident was forced to make when he became President of a postcommunist country. But for people not deeply familiar with Havel's work, this is not the place to start. First read "Open Letters" and "Disturbing the Peace," then John Keane's (similarly unconventional) biography.

Wonderful, what a man. We went to Prague and stayed with a friend of his! Who feels the same way!

Even the best, even those who once won big bucks, by the time they are in their forties or fifties they are near broke, and realize they should have stayed with their job at UPS and tried to advance their, instead of playing pool fifteen hours a day seven days a week, earning just enough pool winnings to stay broke and to play the ponies which makes sure they stay broke. Show me a successful pool player and I will show you a married guy whose wife has a good paying job and won't let daddy get at her paycheck.

A good book, and well written. I found it enjoyable.One problem with the otherwise OK Kindle edition: persistent confusion between "off" and "of." Like someone flicking you in the temple every so often, all the way through the book.The problem with the "road hustler" book genre, of which this is one of the better exemplars, is that there's no arc to the story. The protagonist(s) hit the road, stuff happens to them, they lose or win money, they go home again. Rinse, lather, repeat.Ironically, I think this would be better as a movie. I picture Jonah Hill as Kid Delicious and Tom Cruise as 007 (Tom Cruise does have to do what Paul Newman did with him in "The Color of Money," and reprise his character as an older man. One way or another. Someday. I mean, come on.)If there's a flaw to this book it's that the author seems to overhype his subject's abilities as a player. I mean, Danny Basavich is not the last road hustler and he's not the best pool player in the country. He hasn't really done much or made much of a splash since the book was written. They way the book tells it, you'd think Danny was on the verge of becoming the next Shane van Boening. Hasn't happened that I can see.But still...a good book, well written, and an enjoyable read.Oh, and the Kindle edition OMITS the illustrations!!! At least, nothing showed up on my iPad. BIG demerit in my opinion. Boo to that.

Kid Delicious' story is moving -- at times tragic, heroic and beyond belief. He's part manic depressive, part obese food addict and part ultra-talented pool shark. His dedication to the game gave him solace from a world (New Jersey suburbs) that didn't have much sympathy for a fat, homely, smart-aleck kid with a sharp mind.Kid Delicious (Danny Basavich) comes to dominate the pool hustling circuit, and you can't help but admire how he pursues/embraces his true love in spite of his profound psychological struggles. His success is a testament to putting everything you have into something you love, and his failures make him human and sympathetic.If you like books like Playing Off the Rail or Positively Fifth Street, you'll love this one. Wertheim's research is very thorough and he writes like a true billiards fan, with a detailed understanding of the cadences of the game and the sundry characters who populate the dark, dank pool halls across our country.Danny Basevich's life has certainly been a roller-coaster ride, and Wertheim captures its energy admirably. A phenomenal read.

Wonderful book, puts you on the road with Kid Delicious and Bristol Bob as they tour the country. In addition to the David versus Goliath story of a local pool legend matching talents with the world of pools icons, the book is ripe with colorful characters and the eccentric types who populate pool halls around this country. I bought this book hoping to get a peek into the world of professional pool, but enjoyed all the more for the human side of the story. Danny Basavich is the type of guy you just end up rooting for. His personality comes through and you can help but smile when you hear stories of his "slow shooting" driving the likes of Earl "The Pearl" Strickland nuts.

I looked forward each day to the beautiful scenes of our trip and to the continuing exploits of Kid Delicious and Bristol Bob. It wasn't 'til the end of the book that I realized this is nonfiction! (Kid Delicious was interviewed by Scott Simon on NPR this past Sunday, 11/04/07. Check it out at [...].)

The idea behind this book began in 2011, when I realized what was pulling the strings of my constant failures as a trader. At that time, I had a proven trading methodology, but still, I couldn't operate it without repeatedly making a number of trading errors. At one point, I had lost most of my trading capital; I was unhealthy, unhappy, and stuck in my bad habits. After failing to make any good trading habit stick, I decided to make one change: I stopped wishing or wanting things to happen.  Don't get me wrong, I didn't give up on my goals. I just decided to let things happen as they may without holding any expectations whatsoever. Then, I made another small change: I changed the way I viewed losses. I stopped believing that I was a victim of circumstances. This realization prompted me tostop believing everything my mind was telling me when I was under stress. And a year later, I had changed a dozen of self-limiting habits that caused me to deviate from my trading methodology and made consistency an impossible feat to achieve.  As it turns out, I am now enjoying consistent trading results; I am healthier and happier than ever,  all the while doing the work that I love - trading and writing about my experiences. In The essence of trading psychology in one skill, I share the shift in perspective I underwent that has helped me let go of my bad habits and generate consistency - in my behavior and my results. This short book is a culmination of everything I have learned while changing my life, and now, I want to help you change yours!

I just finished reading The Essence of Trading Psychology In One Skill and found it very enlightening and helpful. I investigated meditation for traders and found out that most of the very successful traders we all hear and read so much about have been meditating for years to help become successful in their trading and to help improve their trading results. The book was a quick read and gets to the main idea of mindfulness and meditation without a lot of unnecessary filler or fluff information. The fact that the author trades for a living lends credibility to the subject matter and how meditation has turned his trading around. I am going to start my own morning routine of meditating before the trading day starts and give credit for this positive change to the author and his book. The only thing negative about the book is that the book should have been better proof read before being sent to the printers. Quite a few sentences with extra words or wrong words added to sentence of incomplete thoughts/sentences, however ,it's not that big a deal as the author still gets his message across to the reader. I would recommend this book to other traders wanting to improve their trading performance and results.John W.Nashville , TN .

Having read Yvan's other books, I was eager to see his new work, and so far have been very impressed! His writing style blends a craft and articulation that flows as much as his messages. And the topics are big and challenging ones, but his wisdom derives from accumulated experience, learning from past mistakes and failures to evolve in a very substantial way. This will be a book I come back to again and again. I highly recommend this book for other investors and traders looking to improve and willing to see the parallels between life in the markets and life out of the markets.

This book is a keeper! As a trader, if you've ever wondered to yourself, how do I get inside my head to find out what is going on with me when I put on a trade, then this book will certainly open up new mental pathways to the answers you seek. I see a lot of wisdom in these pages which concisely delve into such insightful one liner phrases like: "Willpower is a wasting asset", "control in the markets is an illusion", "trading effectively is about assessing probabilities not certainties", and my favorite of the group; "neurons that fire together, wire together". Throughout this book, Yvan does of excellent job of making a sound and logical case for every concept and idea he discusses. There is no doubt that you will be a different trader when you put this book down after reading, and thinking about its wisdom. I guess the only criticism I have is that Yvan "borrowed" a few choice words and phrases from Mark Douglas' Trading in the Zone, and I didn't see any attribution,...but I think that Mark (RIP) would have approved with where Yvan took those words, ideas, and concepts into new ground. Also, though I'm not a fan of "Eastern Meditation", I do like the alternative techniques that Yvan offers in the book, which accomplish the same results, and I have since "learned" how to daily meditate...my own way. This book is small in size ...but very powerful in content. Nice Job Yvan!

I highly recommend this book ! I was introduced to Yvan through Twitter and became interested very quickly in his post and website. After visiting his site I figured I would give his book a try. To be honest like many out there I was skeptic at first,but something told me to order this book, and the rest is history. What was once normal for me to take days and sometime weeks to accomplish a book I had finished this book withing twenty four hours.The book is in easy to read format and to the point. Thank you Yvan for a wonderful book !!!

It's a good book that introduce traders to the core of trading psychology. This book ignites me to seriously resume practicing meditation again. As Buddhist, it is not difficult for me to follow, be convinced and appreciate the content of the book. However, to those who are not familiar with meditation, to be able to fully reap the benefit of meditation at the author's level described in the book, ones will actually need guiding and coaching in how to do the meditation as the book provides just a very basic guideline. Overall, this book is worth reading.

If you plan to day trade for a living and you think psychology doesn't matter, think again! This book outlines the importance of trading mindfully and does it very well.

There quite a few points that every one experiencing on the way to success in trading and they are well noted by author. Missing a depth on every single one of those points. Would be great to see detailed description of them. Overall is good book to read.
