Priced fairly for what it is, this book is a high-quality source for people who want to specialize in the 18th century fashions but do not want to settle for the imitation genre of historical sewing like the kind of costuming typical for Halloween and theater projects. This book is especially appropriate for civilian (non-military) interpreters in the Revolutionary War period re-enactment community. That's the main reason I purchased it. It's an ideal guide to show accurate patterns and the layout of a sewing project in very nice color. Even though it's not a series of step-by-step photos of someone piecing each part of a garment together, it still presents good facts to help the reader imagine how a garment was made, including what kinds of fabrics it was made of. The variety of garments presented is very satisfying too. Certain designs explain certain functions, such as working-wear as opposed to fancier attire. There are examples for both men's and women's clothing of that time in history.Consider carefully, for the reader to successfully attempt to actually re-create an example of something that's shown in the book, an intermediate level of prior sewing skill or higher would be recommended. Intermediate for the simpler style of projects, and advanced skill for the more formal-style projects. This book clearly does not appear to be intended for beginners in the construction of clothes in general. However, it's got what it takes to inspire even a beginner historical seamstress or tailor to aim higher. That's definitely the case for me.My favorite aspect of the book is that the content is of a professional nature and is definitely no-nonsense, right from the archives of Colonial Williamsburg!

The information was excellent. The interior photographs were dark and disappointing, especially after the beautiful cover photo.

Excellent resource for anyone interested in constructing clothing that is accurate for the latter half of the 18th Century. This book was meticulously researched and contains amazingly detailed descriptions of authentic clothing artifacts. It's a treasure trove for historical sewing fans!

This was recommended to me by a scholar friend as a “must have” book. I agree, I refer to it frequently when constructing items and to help identify period items.

I am a college student focusing on 18th century women's clothing. I found this book to be very informative, with both basic and detailed information. Ms. Baumgarten writes crisply and to-the-point, creating a book that is very readable and understandable. The pictures are good, and the diagrams & patterns are clear and helpful. In between the diagrams are little notes describing historical sewing and construction practices, printing methods, textile production, and how clothing was worn and altered over time. A great basic book, but also very useful for anybody wishing to understand clothing construction in greater detail.

Lovely book - was hoping for more information regarding technique. Much of the content can be found with an on-line search, however, it makes a pretty table book in a costuming environment.

I recently carved a wooden doll based on 18th century Queen Anne dolls, and I wanted more in depth detail as to how the appropriate clothing would have been made. I was thrilled to receive this book, and to be able to not only study extant garments, but also to see the pattern shapes as well. Highly recommend to anyone with an interest in accurate representations of 18th century clothing.

Gorgeous, well written book. I'd recommend it to anyone who loves fashion history, costuming, or pretty, pretty clothes.

We bought three books about puberty for our 11 year old son. I will post this comment under all three books. The books are The Boy’s Body Book, Third Edition: Everything You Need to Know for Growing up YOU by Kelli Dunham, RN; The “What’s Happening to My Body?” Book for Boys. Revised Edition by Lynda Madaras with Area Madaras and It’s Perfectly Normal: Changing Bodies, Growing Up, Sex and Sexual Health (The Family Library) by Robie H. Harris.My son read all three books, so I asked him for his feedback on each book and this is what he said.He found the It’s Perfectly Normal book to be “more comic’y and less squeamish.” He found the Bird and the Bee characters thru-out the book to be “really funny.” It’s Perfectly Normal contained the most information about sexual intercourse whereas The Boy’s Body Book and What’s Happening to My Body have more about health.The What’s Happening to My Body book contained “more anatomically correct drawings.” It also has a section about being uncircumcized and how to take care of your foreskin.The Boy’s Body Book is “fine,” but “it doesn’t really talk about sex and genital changes.” It doesn’t go into as much detail as the other two books. It does however have more content on older teens, curfew, chores, siblings and divorce. It also has a brief section on what to do if someone tries to touch you inappropriately.The Boy’s Body Book also doesn’t have a section about girls’ bodies, but both What’s Happening to My Body and It’s Perfectly Normal do have sections about girls.Overall, if parents want a book that is more about emotions, then he recommends the Boy’s Body Book; and if parents want a book that is more detailed about sex and genital changes, then he recommends What’s Happening to My Body or It’s Perfectly Normal.

Love this book! It's very detailed without being too graphic. There are no actual photographs just illustrations which is nice for younger boys. My son likes it at age 9 almost 10 and there are parts we can come back to in a couple years like tips on shaving and getting his first job. There are also websites listed where boys can get more information if needed.

I got this for my ten year old son, as an introduction to the years ahead. We went through a bit of it when I gave it to him, but I'm leaving the rest to research on his own, then ask me or my husband questions if he has them. I assume he's reading it, because he came into the kitchen last week and calmly announced, "Yeah, I think I'm in the first stages of puberty."

Tells boys what to expect of their bodies without being too graphic. Talks about puberty, but also about how to eat well and exercise and proper hygeine and whatnot. Great book, along the vein of American Girls' The Care and Keeping of Me. I recommend for boys 8 and up.

I wanted a book that my son could read on his own to formulate questions on puberty. It covers the basics - wet dreams, growth spurts, etc, but doesn't talk about sex, which is perfect for my son's age. Much of the book is actually about friendship and other topics, but my son really enjoyed it. I will see him reading this book on his own.

This is about my 10th time purchasing a book from this series. I get it for all the 6th graders. As a former school nurse, I know that is the age they have a lot of curiosity/anxiety about the subject, and among the several I have bought, this is the one they seem to prefer.

Bought for a 11 year old boy for questions I was not ready to answer. After flipping through the book, some of the content - I felt for an immature child is at, was a bit to informative.. However the chapters that pertain to NOW , I had him read then we talk about it afterwards. Pretty much the book has been dissected now in a binder, the appropriate chapters to be revealed as he matures. I love the part about hygiene!!!

I bought this for my ten and twelve year old grandsons. This is a great book for boys this age. Sex education doesn't get taught in our schools until 7th grade, and this book gave them the information they needed as a prerequisite to that; namely, addressing body changes and information appropriate for middle schoolers. The kids read for half an hour before going to sleep, and this book was regularly in somebody's bed. Thank you for helping this nana deal with getting the right information to her grandsons!!

Nicely written, for me a solid 4&1/2 stars, I knew about Gandhi but I knew less than I realized. Quite the activist, his views on non-violent means to achieve his dreams of an independent India set the standard. Sadly, like many revered in history, he never came to a personal relationship with Christ. Interestingly, he misjudged the Muslim problem, thinking Hindus could live in harmony with the Muslim population. The Muslim problem it seems, is a common issue with many of the World's nations. No doubt Gandhi's miscalculation over the issue of a separate India from a separate Muslim nation helped bring about his demise. In the end, however, his words of wisdom propagate the globe even to this day!

I have read several books about Mahatma Gandhi and the partition of British India into India and Pakistan. This e-book is concise and hits most of the highlights of Mahatma Gandhi life and his effect on the events that ultimately led to the independence of India. I don’t remember the other books emphasizing how shy he was since he ultimately became pretty charismatic. I also did not realize that he one of his sons. The nonviolent movement that he created was later used by Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, and others to obtain the civil rights of members of their communities. Everyone should read this book about Mahatma Gandhi particularly if they are not planning to read additional books about this great leader.

This is a good precis of a fascinating life.He was a 'late-bloomer', but - wow - when he got into gear and changed the world......Then the British spoiled The Dream with partition - pity really that inconsequential religion reared its ugly head!There's not much information about his personal life / marriage / children / how he financed his later life ........?

A common man who became a father of a nation by using nonviolent protests to finally separate from the British Empire. His methods were eventually used by King and Mandela.

This is a very good book for someone with little knowledge of the Mahatma! It's factual and we'll written. I would recommend it for someone without a lot of time but a fair amount of curiosity. Beyond that, for someone with a bit more time and who would like something more dramatic, I suggest Richard Attenborough's epic film, with a stellar performance by Ben Kingsley! If you've still a thirst for more, there are many (less dry) biographies.

Good read. Highlights include the many challenges Gandhi had to endure throughout his life. His non violent ways should teach all of mankind that violence is not the best way for change.

A history of an icon related simply and easy to absorb, even with males and titles which are foreign to most westerners.

A good read about a man that changed the world a and a century! Recommended!

My background is in computer science and software engineering and I've been interested ML as more of a hobbyist and outside observer for a few years (reading some books, taking Andrew NG's coursera course), just recently dabbling in some applications professionally. What I was still missing before reading this book was as high a level understanding of where all of the models and technique in the field of ML fit. Other books describe the difference between supervised and unsupervised learning, but this book goes further in describing how, say, decisions trees, support vector machines and deep neural networks fit compared to each other and within which subfields statistics play a larger role than others.The book also puts many techniques in historical perspective that I found very helpful, such as the rise, fall and rise again of deep neural networks with support vector machines taking a lead as the hottest technique in between (while also making clear that SVMs are a useful technique with unique strengths today). Finally, it makes clear that these techniques are not all competing for being the best overall at everything, but that they can be used quite complementary and/or they have unique strengths within certain problem domains. The book accomplishes all of this through a survey of broad subfields of ML, how each has attempted to be *the* master algorithm, has fallen short in some ways, but remains the best at some things and could play a role in the state of the art master algorithm (while acknowledging we're not quite there yet). So while the term 'master algorithm' is somewhat of a gimmick (as he acknowledges), it's a good way to think about what ML is attempting to accomplish as a field: building working, adaptive software systems with less and less human assistance by learning from data, and to see how many specific techniques have played a role in progress.What I don't know is how accessible this book might be to someone who's less technical. I think the first couple chapters would be a great read for anyone with a general interest, making clear how ML differs from the traditional software / automation that has brought us so far, but it could be that the details within the rest of the chapters that go into more depth would be too in the weeds.I've also read some other reviews from technical readers that assert the book lacks enough depth to be helpful, but this wasn't the case for me, in fact the level of detail was perfect—just deep enough to match with details I'd skimmed before in previous surveys of the field yet not so deep that I couldn't get through and enjoy the chapters in a casual evening read. The author also explained some concepts better than I've read anywhere else before, such as the debate is between frequentist and bayesian statisticians.

The Master Algorithm is a reasonable overview of the growing field of machine learning. The author explores the idea of there being a master algorithm which could explain everything given enough data. The idea seems a bit over the top when initially phrased but the real purpose of the book is to introduce ideas used in machine learning and how they work and are used to solve problems.The book is split into multiple chapters which start from discussing abstractly the master algorithm and then move on to some of the philosophical issues associated with using such algorithms. In particular the author discusses at the core of believing in pattern recognition algorithms is belief in inductive reasoning. The author discusses human learning and gets into some neuroscience and how neural networks are constructed. The reader gets a vague sense of Hebbian learning and how neuron weighting are at the core of neural networks. The author spends a lot of time discussing various approaches in machine learning and gives the reader an intuitive feel of Bayesian learning. The author was an originator in a particular algorithm called naïve Bayes which greatly simplified solutions to certain problems and so the author introduces his ideas to the reader. Other machine learning ideas are introduced like genetic programming and multivariable regression. The author also discusses other machine learning algorithms which turn data into a vector and then look for close neighbors of the vector to classify the input. The author also spends some time on how unsupervised learning would look. The book combines computer science ideas and intuition and tries to use a fictitious robot as the means to convey ideas about how a computer would learn. The author finally introduces his own master algorithm called alchemy which combines most of the models described in the book. The reader really gets little actual sense of what's going on in the algorithm as the author qualifies one needs a PhD in computer science.The Master Algorithm is the first book I have seen which introduces some of the ideas being used in machine learning to a general audience. It does so quite well and most of the ideas are absorbable. At the same time there are a few too many instances where the author is self promoting talking about all of the brilliant ideas he has had which have reshaped the field and how other areas of AI research of the past or Kurzweil and his singularity concept are idiotic. Despite probably being right in much of his analysis its arguing with no one on the other side and unproductive. Also the flavor of the writing is odd - it turns into some fantasy literature at times as though that makes the subject more digestible and in fact makes it more irritating. I enjoyed reading aspects of the book and do think the parts on what different schools of machine learning focus on are well written for a non expert, unfortunately there are many other parts of the book which one wants to get through as quickly as possible.

AWESOME OVERVIEW OF ML IDEASI have read a few textbooks on machine learning (intro to Statistical Learning by Hastie etc) and so I would say that my knowledge of ML is at the "textbook overview" level. Since I am not a ML practitioner, I may not be the best judge of a book such as this one, it was a fairly difficult read, and I know I need to read the book a second time to get an even greater appreciation and understanding of the concepts covered by the author. That being said, it was a very enjoyable book. The book was very different from any ML book that I've read or checked out either at a bookstore or online. I think one needs to have some knowledge of ML to appreciate the book - concepts like supervised learning, unsupervised learning, Bayesian inference, support vector machines, neural networks, etc .... The book deserves a 5-star rating because it added a lot of value to my understanding of ML, and increased my desire and curiosity to learn more about the field of ML ....

This is a great book and covers everything but this book is certainly not for someone without prior knowledge of machine learning and good understand of some principles.At the start of the book, Pedro mentions that this book is written for the layman but it's not.I gave this book to a friend of mine before I read it and he was like "doode this is not for laymen, I didn't understand a thing".While the book is great for seasoned programmers and those starting with machine learning and good knowledge of some concepts, this book ain't for someone who wants to know more about machine learning and algorithms.I still give it 5 because Pedro is a great guy and this book is indepth.
