Harper's Magazine"Authoritative and timely." Boston Globe"Wonderfully readable...Shippey makes an impressive case for why the creator of Middle-earth is deserving of acclaim." Publishers Weekly"Shippey is a rarity, a scholar well-schooled in critical analysis whose writing is beautifully clear." Minneapolis Star-Tribune"Delightful exploration of the relationship between Tolkien's fiction...scholarly work and the mythical, linguistic and philosiphical history underlying both." Philadelphia Inquirer"Shippey presents a remarkably insightful account of the origins of Tolkien's use of language and myth." The Chicago Tribune"Full of things-we-hadn't-known...As scholarship, it's one of the more enjoyable works I've run across." The San Diego Union-Tribune"[Shippey] deepens your understanding of the work without making you forget your initial, purely instinctive response to Middle-earth and hobbits." About the Author

Tom Shippey taught at Oxford University at the same time as J.R.R. Tolkien and with the same syllabus, which gives him an intimate familiarity with the works that fueled Tolkien's imagination. He subsequently held the chair of English language and medieval literature at Leeds University that Tolkien had previously held.

I must begin by saying I read the book believing it was a discussion of the Middle Earth books and their place in literature and a biography of Tolkien mixed in. It is a far greater analysis of the author, his works, and a explanation of the role philology played in Tolkien's creative procexx. The author, himself a philosophically trained Professor, brings forth an very detailed explanation of the origins and impact this knowledge the history, originx, and relationships of language had on Professor Tolkien's works. The text have me a better understanding how Tolkien's own academic interests helped form his most seminal texts, but also how these successes weighed down his other academic and literary endeavors. I can recommend the book to any student of writing, history, literary creation, or Tolkien Devotees. However, people immersed in the Cinemanic Middle Earth may not enjoy the book as much.

I have read this book many times over. If you are like me, a person that cannot get enough Tolkien, you will enjoy this book and the other one written by Shippey. They provide tremendous insight and understanding into how Tolkien wrote these books and where he got a lot of ideas from etc. For me personally, I found the chapters dealing with his other works to be far more interesting. The whole "Faerie" Lost Road angle I found to be mesmerizing. The idea that he had spent maybe so much his life engaged in sub-creative fantasy worlds that he wanted to believe there was a "Lost Road" to it was both poignant and sad to me. It is the same feeling I had after finishing The Lord of The Rings.

I was prompted to read his book after watching the appendices from the five-disc sets to the three Hobbit movies and the five-disc sets to the three Lord Of The Rings movies. Tom Shippey was interviewed extensively in all, and he provided quite a bit of scholarly background that enhanced the viewing of all six movies. The book did not disappoint. He writes as well as he speaks, and his perspective as a scholar is invaluable in gaining further insight into the world created by Tolkien. Next steps? Why, read all four books again, and then watch the appendices to hear Shippey's contribution to them. I can't wait. But the book is about more than these classics, and he writes thoughtfully about all of Tolkien's works. This book is well worth reading, and re-reading.

This book is really an exceptionally well-written view of JRR Tolkien. As a dedicated Tolkien fan, I read just about everything by and about him, and Shippey's insightful angle of learning about him by studying what he wrote and why is wonderfully interesting, and different from the standard biography that Tolkien so hated. I enjoyed this book very much, and keep it close at hand with my other best-loved reference material about Tolkien.

This is an excellent book for anyone who wants an in-depth view of Tolkien. Most people today aren't philologists, so a lot of the depth of Tolkien's work is lost to the average reader. Shippey does an awesome job taking a microscope to the text and showing the incredible intricacy of The Silmarillion, Hobbit, and LotR. He shows the reader which ancient works Tolkien used for his own subcreation, as well as the way that those 'real' worlds and words affected his. It's definitely a great book for anyone who's interested in learning more about Tolkien and how his work is an extension of his philology. It shows how masterful Tolkien was, and how sophisticated his work is. Shippey is an amazing philologist in his own right, and the analysis in this book shows his academic caliber.

Starting with Shippey's opening claim that "The dominant literary mode of the twentieth century has been the fantastic," this is a fascinating study of Tolkien, what influenced him, and what he in turn influenced. Shippey discusses the concepts of Evil and Myth, and places Tolkien in a group of "traumatized" authors, mostly veterans, who wrote non-realistic fiction (Orwell, Vonnegut, Golding, CS Lewis, TH White, Heller, and (stretching it a bit) LeGuin). Shippey also continues his examination of the pagan roots of Tolkien's concept of courage from his 1983 "The Road to Middle-earth," and includes a useful chapter on the often-neglected shorter works. His examination of the critics who dismiss Tolkien offers excellent insights into the failures of modern criticism. This book is a good place for the novice reader of Tolkien criticism to start, and there is an extensive bibliography of other critical works. The copy I borrowed on interlibrary-loan is full of post-it notes awaiting transfer to the copy I have on order!

A truly enjoyable book on the scholarship behind the writing of Tolkien and LotR. Mr. Shippey brings to life the depth of knowledge inherent in Tolkien's fantasy works. It is wonderful how he explains how Tolkien's love of philology and works like Beowulf and the Elder Edda informs his writing.

Perhaps I've watched one (or a hundred) too many horror movies, but I was not even moderately spooked by this story. I went in with high expectations because the author even wrote *Warning, dark horror*. Okay, that's a first in a reverse harem story. I was stoked. Sure, the house definitely seems creepy, but I read this at 1am with no lights and fell asleep like a baby when I finished. Now, apart from the slight disappointment in level of scariness, I was definitely intrigued. This is a unique plot so far, and I'm wondering where it will lead. I do like the shattering of certain tropes (girl refuses to tell anyone what's happening/does nothing to help anyone). While she's not the most independent and forthright character I've read, she still has gumption which is all I need in a lead character. Her love interests are varied, and it's actually hard to tell if one of them is even part of the circle (or if he's alive.. hope that's not a spoiler because I'm just guessing at this point).Looking forward to the next installment!

This book is amazing. The writing style and the authors voice is phenomenal and the kind that makes me want to read every book this author ever writes. This is the first time a book actually scared me, even more than some horror movies. I read this late into the night and had to make sure all the outside lights were on while doing so. I cannot wait for the second book to be released so I can find out what happens next. The Shadow Man, the haunted house, the gang rivalry, being the new girl in a new town and new school, juggling friends and possible boyfriends, this book is such an amazing read and is filled with so much mystery that I want to solve.

I’ve never read a horror book until this one, but this author is a one-click author for me so I had to give it a try! I’m so glad I did.The Shadow Man has got to be one of the creepiest villains in anything I’ve ever seen or read- he reminds me of a mix between Pennywise from It and Slenderman. Super messed up. We didn’t see much of the actual Shadow Man in the book but you definitely felt his presence throughout the story. The characters were all very unique too. I loved the twins in particular!

This book is creepy and sad and dark, if you don't like cliffhangers you won't like this book.I however enjoy a cliffhanger... I enjoyed this book and getting to the end and gasping in horror knowing the story was over.I liked that the MC was struggling emotionally and was not perfect. She struggled with being loyal and her own self worth, as we all do as teens. I enjoyed her meeting all the fellas and the relationships developing. I loved the family dynamic.I don't want to go into much more because I don't want to give anything away. This is a great book, give it a chance.

While I can't say i disliked this book I found myself skimming the last half. I feel we don't get all the information. It took me a long time to warm up to the MC but as someone living with anxiety I love that there's an author out there who can accurately describe what it feels like on a daily basis. I'm a little on the fence about buying the next book when it comes out, this book intrigued me but I needed a bit more character development.

First of all, I loved this book! I wish more RH authors would do more of a horror type book. This was very well written. The character depth was spectacular! The MC is very relatable and I like that she's really discovering her self worth by the end (I totally hope she gives it to Jaron and Fiona soon). That cliffhanger at the end was a bit cruel though. ;) Loved it and I can't wait to read more.

It's been so long since I've read such a unique RH. This one was terrifying in the best of ways. I made the mistake of downloading the sample at midnight because then I proceeded to buy the book and stay up reading until I finished it! It was too addictive that even my exhaustion couldn't convince me to sleep. I'm also a pansy, and I'm not going to lie, there were so many parts where I found myself checking my room because I was scared the Shadow Man was lurking in the shadows. But did my pansiness (we're going to pretend that's a word) stop me from reading this alone at night? Nope. You'll get sucked into the story and plot, so heed my warning. Do not read at night. I repeat. Do not read at night or else you'll wake up 2 hours after finishing it, exhausted, trying to fumble around to get ready for work. I definitely recommend this book. Even for my fellow pansies.

Wow! This is such a great book! I started reading it after I had heard good things. And then I didn't sleep. I was up reading it all in one go. I couldn't put it down. I truly can't wait for the next in the series. There are so many different parts of the story that are being woven together, and I can't wait for the next book in the series to see how they all develop. So unique. Highly recommend this series!

I HATE cliffhangers and had I known that’s what this was, I would NOT have bought it. To add insult to injury I paid $4.99 for HALF a book! I understand why the author splits the book...double the payday...but I’ve walked away from authors before for this same reason. If this author expects loyalty from her readers, she needs to treat us with respect and publish a complete book.

Eric Mitchell is a filthy rich (heavy on the filthy) ex-Navy Seal, a Harvard grad, a tattooed alpha bad-boy, an intellectual savant, and the best friend and business partner of Grayson Bennett (from Dirty Rich Betrayal). He’s also the “bastard son” of Jeff Kingston–the patriarch of the powerful Kingston family–and the reluctant “spare heir” to their automotive dynasty. Having been shamed and shunned by the Kingstons since adolescence, Eric has no need of– and wants nothing to do with–his “family’s” fame or fortune. He’s convinced that the pain and shame of his past is well behind him; that is, until Harper Evans, Eric’s biggest regret and his greatest weakness, shows up at his office, begging for help.Harper and Eric share a brief but unforgettable history – a passionate, all-consuming moment in time that brought them together and then just as quickly tore them apart. As much as he wants to keep Harper at a distance and let the Kingston dynasty go up in flames, he can’t resist her plea for help – and soon finds himself deep in a web of secrets and lies that threatens to destroy them both.Once again, Lisa Renee Jones proves herself a master of erotic, romantic suspense, with a plot that will keep you guessing from beginning to end; powerful, passionate, well-developed characters; twists that grab you by the throat; and a cliffhanger that will leave you dangling over an emotional cliff in the best possible way. It’s an adrenaline rush that will feed your dark, sexy soul and leave you wanting more. And more. And more. The good news is the conclusion is only a couple of months away and you can pre-order Book 2 today. The anticipation just might kill you, but as always, it’s totally worth it. I promise that your only regret will be waiting so long to download your copy of this sensual, suspenseful story.

The sparks between them almost burn the place down. One night together or just a little time and their world's are linked together without them realizing it.Harper knew a little about Eric but she didn't think he would have the control over her mind and body as he does. When they spend a little time together at the party and he leaves, she feels the loss. He makes her feel alive while the rest of the Kingston men are slimy and she can't stand to be around them. She has to stay at Kingston Motors to save her own fathers legacy.Years later she goes to Eric for help to save the family business. Review

"Ingenious. . . . A tour de force. . . . Achieves a real profundity. "—The Boston Globe"A sharply drawn, acutely felt novel of moral inquiry. . . . Wolff has put his readers in the landscape tracked across by writers as different as J. M. Coetzee, Philip Roth, and, going back, Conrad and Hawthorne." —The Washington Post Book World"The kind of deceptively quiet novel that deserves a second, slow reading. An homage to the power of story to move, to awaken and even to transform." —The Plain Dealer"Gentle, reserved, graceful. . . . Wolff again proves himself to be a writer of the highest order: part storyteller, part philosopher, someone deeply engaged in asking hard questions." —Los Angeles Times

From the Inside Flap

The protagonist of Tobias Wolff's shrewdly--and at times devastatingly--observed first novel is a boy at an elite prep school in 1960. He is an outsider who has learned to mimic the negligent manner of his more privileged classmates. Like many of them, he wants more than anything on earth to become a writer. But to do that he must first learn to tell the truth about himself. The agency of revelation is the school literary contest, whose winner will be awarded an audience with the most legendary writer of his time. As the fever of competition infects the boy and his classmates, fraying alliances, exposing weaknesses, Old School" explores the ensuing deceptions and betrayals with an unblinking eye and a bottomless store of empathy. The result is further evidence that Wolff is an authentic American master.

Loved this book; I had never read anything by Wolff. The story moves somewhat slowly, in part because Wolff takes risky walks off the path from time to time (e.g., unflattering depictions of Rand and Frost, who make walk-on appearances in the book as special guest stars (almost like a literary joke, crashing the party of the actual cast of boys who are awed by literary celebrity but who don't care to really know one another), as well as diversions presented by short stories-within-the-story as outlined by the narrator but as authored by others). Really loved this as a contemplative character study, with its brilliant mix of darks and lights that gives way to a somber but not humorless portrait of an artist who is just beginning to learn to know himself -- and to understand that self-knowledge can't come from the approval of his betters or their reflected view of him.

Mr. Wolf is a magnificent writer. What is not said leaps between the lines and gives added depth to the sensitivities of the characters. The protagonist is everyman wrestling with the problems in his boyhood. The setting is a private school but social classes are mixed within this elect confine. Literature is both the subject and object of their interest and the interplay between the two is quite breath-taking. One cannot but admire the manner in which Tobias Wolf has created such a piercing tale about ordinary boys and extraordinary poetry.

If you’ve never read a story so blindingly brill, deceptively linear and tenderly wrought that you just knew something was lurking beneath the surface but couldn’t quite grasp the image before the last sentence? Here is your huckleberry. This is a reader’s treasury of that particularly 20th century style in which the art is rendered so smoothly, unwrinkled by clutter, that swooning over structure a paragraph removed is common.I’ll read it again. I must. I’ve either been hoodwinked, bedazzled or just plain humbugged. Beautiful.

This was a great introduction to the life of students and teachers in the early 60's at a somewhat pretentious east coast prep school. I guess it is the kind of place well to do folks send their kids for grades 7 -12. It must be somewhat of a memoir although it is considered a novel, it reads so well, it must have been the author's experience. Interesting that schools of this nature actually offer scholarships and recruit nationally. I enjoyed every page. It is on my 16 year old's summer reading list, so I thought I would read a few pages to see what it was all about. Found I could not put it down. It also gave me some insight, however biased, into a few of the great American authors of the 20th century. The conversation with Ayn Rand is amazing!

This novel was fascinating. I'm not sure if it's a memoir. This is the 2nd of many books that I have read or intend to read by the same author. The writer and his work were written about in a national magazine. The reader is invited in to a "sacred" environment. I enjoyed the relaxed pace of the novel. If one thing bothered me, it was that the story goes off into tangential stories, and later jumps back to the topic that was left off. But by then, I had learned to read the author and understood the side trips.

Wolff is a highly skilled crafter of words. His story is a joy to read and the character descriptions are richly assembled. Having said this, I found the book to have major flaws. Or maybe I missed some hints and it’s the characters who are intentionally flawed? You won’t regret reading “Old School.” but I’d be interested to know if you come away with some questions about its odd plot turns.

Okay, I liked the book but my curiosity about the cover photo is not satisfied since I still don't know if Wolff himself is one of the boys pictured in the photo? Since he submitted the photo, I am thinking possibly yes.... AND, could he be the boy on the spine of the book? That frustration aside, I bought this book for a couple of reasons: mainly because I really loved THIS BOY'S LIFE and hoped to be as entertained in this book, but also because I am a book-lover and always wished I had attended a prep school, so the setting appealed to me. Call it nostalgia for something I never had. This book is essentially a long short story with a couple of laugh-out-loud moments which are always greatly appreciated. But I couldn't get past the fact that I kept wondering about Wolff's life, the SALON interview notwithstanding. I am curious as to why he is so evasive about the facts of his life beyond the last page of THIS BOY'S LIFE where he seemed to be so brutally no-holds-barred honest and forthright. Did he graduate from Hill School, or did he leave just prior to graduation? The book mentions a father a few times, even rather benignly, but states that his mother was dead at the time of the writing which I believe was not true; so, what is autobiographical and what is not? I couldn't get beyond those curiousities as I read the book.I laughed out loud at Wolff's Ayn Rand diatribe. I read The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged in college, too, and my father almost came undone, thought I had turned into a Commie or something, and was really very upset. To me at the age of 18 they were just books. I liked them well enough, but I also loved other authors. In this book I think Wolff introduces enough variance in the books and authors he discusses that we are left to find our own favorites.Okay, I skimmed through all 12 pages of reader reviews here, hoping to find one written by someone who went to school, Hill School, with Wolff so we could get some straight answers, but I didn't see anything.... It's been a lot of years, but maybe he'll open up all the way one of these days and satisfy a lot of curious minds by telling the rest of his story. Directly. Not fictionalized.Good book. I liked THIS BOY'S LIFE better. Not to mention his brother's book DUKE OF DECEPTION which I also loved.PS: I was thrilled to hear directly from Tobias Wolff today, February 20, 2009, and he says the photo on the cover of the book was taken at his school a couple of years prior to his arrival, so he is not in the picture. I'm still mesmerized by the boys in the photo, but now I can stop speculating on which one might be the real Tobias Wolff.
