The book is in most places very well-written. I might have wished it to be organized differently, or maybe the course I took could have been more closely tied to the book's organization. Or perhaps it's just that I haven't studied chemistry in quite a long time. . .but that's me, not the book.

Wow...this has a lot of technical infomration and equations. If you are required to read this for a class, it is not too bad to read, a little dry (not suprising). However, my feedback is more on the seller. The book was in great shape for being used and arrived arrive in plenty of time for class.

The book was shipped on time, but it was falling apart with excessive notes.

My issue with this book is not its content, but it's manufacture. After only 2 months of relatively light use the book has pages coming out of it and the binding is falling apart. This is the paperback version, but even so, it should be lasting MUCH longer than this. Very poorly made. Shame on Prentice Hall for producing such a poorly made product!

I got the book, it is in great condition (1.5 semester later), and still is extremely useful. Also, it is a hardback edition :)

This book provides a very readable and informative introduction. I have had it for several years and it is a good reference as well.

Very general, and many formulas are not derived but simply stated.

The book came in great condition, but take note that these are soft cover editions!

Heart of a Lion (Lions of Judah Series #1), by Gilbert Morris

From Booklist

*Starred Review* The indefatigable Morris, who has tackled everything from westerns to science fiction, tries his hand at biblical fiction in the first installment of Lions of Judah, a series featuring the lineage of Christ. Heart of a Lion begins with a lively account of Noah's boyhood, when he struggled with his feelings for a young woman who worships Baal. Eventually, after conquering a number of demons, Noah settles upon a monastic carpenter's life while he awaits directions from the Ancient One. The gathering of animals and the Great Flood could hardly fail to be entertaining, and they are, though it's hard not to recall John Huston's rather more earthy rendition of Noah in The Bible. I gave "Heart of a Lion" 5 stars because:1. ... It captured my attention and interest immediately, in the first few pages; I read it in 2 sittings (literally) - I didn't want to stop reading;2. ... The plot and the characters were believable;3. ... The narrative descriptions made me feel as though I was right in themiddle if the story, a participant not just an observer;4. ... In my nearly 65 years of life I have had a number of experiences which I could identify with various experiences of several of the characters;5. ... I was impressed with the manner in which the characters, some more than others, interpreted their interaction with our Creator - it help me see new ways to understand old truths;6. ... I felt as though I had worshipped as I read "Heart of a Lion;"7. ... Also, as an aside, the grammar and story continuity were superb, causing no challenge to my being able to focus on what was happening in the story;I would recommend this book to anyone who might have ever wondered what it might have been like to live in the days before and just after the Flood. This novel is appropriate for teens through senior adults.Be prepared to laugh, cry, hold your breath and be amazed as you discover the "Heart of the Lion."

I generally enjoy historical fiction, but this book seemed to deviate too far from scripture. Often I found myself simply skimming pages just to finish the story. The author captures well the highs and lows of faith and lack thereof. I could feel the worry that Noah and his family felt, wondering, "are we crazy, have we heard God correctly?"But the inaccuracies were rampant:Scripture says that man was vegetarian before the flood, but the author has them eating meat.Genesis 6:9 says "Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God." But the author presents him as overcome by sexual temptation and unable to separate himself from lust. Can he support this idea? If not, don't mess with God's appraisal of the man. And certainly DO NOT imply that sexual immorality is the norm.I got tired of the author implying that sin came to "helpless men" besieged by immoral women. Sure there are immoral women, but God tells us that sin entered the world through one man - Romans 5:12. There is a dangerous tendency in men in some "Christian" circles to blame women for the sin of man, but God never says this nor treats women thusly.Galatians 3:28 English Standard Version (ESV)There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.I doubt I will read another book by the author.

I have always loved Gilbert Morris' novels which is why I bought this one. However, he did not hold up to his usual standard of excellence. When anyone attempts to write fiction based on a Biblical character, they need to be very careful to stick to what is Biblically accurate. As has been pointed out in other reviews, he had them eating meat before the flood. He also mentioned seeing lights that shone like the rainbow. How did they know what a rainbow looked like before the first rainbow occurred AFTER the flood. I also don't believe that there was rain and thunder storms before the flood. He told a good story which held my interest but after reading some of these inaccuracies I was disappointed. I will stick to reading his books that are historical fiction, but not based on Bible characters.

The author had a good plot, but seemed to be honing his writing skills as he wrote. The first part of the book contained strange similies such as a man belching like a frog that boomed. Also, the author had Noah eating meat, even though Genesis says only after the flood that animals would be good for eating. Also, he had Noah's son being born before he began the ark and one of them even in charge of engineering it. But the Bible says that Shem, the oldest, was 100 years old two years after the flood. Since Noah took 100 years to build the ark, Shem wasn't even born until two years after Noah began building it. Also, he talked about flat land at the bottom of the mountain with emerald grass, then said the land was rocky and mountainous.I did appreciate that he went into Noah preaching before the flood and life aboard the ark. I have read two other books about Noah and, though one was superbly written, neiter covered these two things.

Some of us took Latin in school because the Greek alphabet was the purview of fraternities and sororities, and we were by disposition and inclination “independents” from birth … and never gonna make Phi Beta Kappa in this lifetime, anyway. But, damnit, we loved Greek mythology! Ms. Barker does the Greeks (and definitely the Trojans) proud with her all-about-Achilles novel. At first I thought her writing too mundane for such grand subject matter. Where is Virgil when we need him?! For this I apologize. Her account of the last years of the Trojan War as related by Briseis aka Hippodameia (look her up!) is so compelling, so intimate, and so gory, I resented the fact that the novel ended.

As a classics major and Latin teacher for over thirty years, I have read many novels which retell the ancient myths from the female perspective. This was the most brutal but at the same time the most moving I have ever read. Reading it during the Kavanaugh hearings made it that much more meaningful. Beautifully written, this powerful book is a must read.

Greek myths, especially ones involving warfare are depicted primarily from the male perspective. This story departs from the usual recounting of the exploits of Achilles during the Trojan War in that Briseis is the central character. We see much of the protracted battle between the Greeks and the Trojans play out through her capture as Achilles’s war prize. The relationship triangle is explored among Achilles, Patroclus, and Briseis even though jealousy isn’t a primary factor. As Briseis is a slave, she adopts a realistic attitude of acquiescence to her servitude to survive. She bears witness to the unbreakable bond between Achilles and Patroclus and develops a strange sort of understanding of the anger that drives Achilles. Patroclus becomes her friend and treats her with unexpected but appreciated kindness. The day-to-day lives of the women slaves are described in excruciating detail. All the way from harem girls providing pleasure to women tending wounded soldiers, their existence alternates between hard labor, boredom, loneliness, pain, and terror. Briseis is one of the fortunate ones. As the prize of Achilles, she is given greater respect than most of the captured women, many of whom were former wives of Trojan aristocrats.Pat Barker’s writing puts you in the middle of the action. The story is immediate and unflinching. You smell the campfires, see the wounded men, and feel the sadness of the captured women. I offer a cautionary note that there are plenty of violent, brutal, and adult situations that some readers may not like.

This is my first Pat Barker book, and it's pretty good, but it's imperfect -- very imperfect. For one thing, the sentiments and vocabulary of Briseis are 21st Century sort-of feminist, and they seem misplaced in the pre-historic realm of the Trojan War. Second, the book switches from the first-person to third-person with no apparent reason; as a result, it's jarring and seems very gimmicky. Those two exceptions aside, the story of the end of the Trojan War continues to be riveting. As are the characters, the dialogue, the mise-en-scene, and so on. It's definitely a good read, but it's not great writing.

This is a strange one, as I admire the author’s earlier work and have read some great modern renditions of the classics recently (Circe, Burial at Thebes, Home Fire). This isn’t in their league. The style is surpassingly awkward, with endless hyphenated parentheticals interrupting the prose. Barker is apt to shift from first person singular to third person, then to first person plural in one sentence. The characters’ locutions are contemporary and common. And the narrator engages in a silly back and forth with the reader, who poses as interrogator. The theme that all history is male, and that women are enslaved by it, is not new, but perhaps especially appropriate now. But its presentation isn’t consistent or convincing. If it weren’t The Iliad, it wouldn’t be worth the read.

Great writing transcends time and place. I think it was Faulkner who, when asked why we read literature, said that we do it to be reminded of the internal truths of the human experience. Baker succeeds, drawing on Homer's Iliad, which some scholars have noted marks the beginning of Western literature. We all know the framework of the story: the Trojan War, a miscreant king, Agamemnon, and a demigod hero, Achilles. Homer sang of the wrath of Achilles, which of course involves a young woman, Briseis. Remarkable that no one seems to have ever written her story--until Baker, that is. We see the great war through her eyes after the invading Greeks destroy her town, slaughter her husband and brothers, and take her as a war prize, giving her to Achilles. Her story tells us much about suffering and survival, of honor and pain, but it also reminds asks us to think about the power of love. I don't mean romantic love, of course. Baker's aim is broader than that. Her description of King Priam pleading for the return of his son, for example, is heartbreaking. It is matched fully by Baker's touching description of Briseis' inner conflict, torn as she is between hating the enemy that changed her life forever but nevertheless finding it possible to forgive the man who made her a slave and then who did not.I hated reaching the final page, wishing that the book were longer, that the story would continue.

I have never read Pat Barker's other works but I will now. This is a beautifully written novel that brings alive the time of ancient Greece from the viewpoint of her main character. Really impressive. You won't regret your purchase.
