There's not much point in discussing Kant himself in a review like this. If you're going to pony up the money, and put the time into reading this demanding book, you already know enough about Kant to admire him. If you don't, there are better places to start (like Copleston's History of Phil, or the Critique of Pure Reason).Pluhar's translation is an ultra of academic fastidiousness, with all the words added for clarity in brackets, copious references to other passages in this or other works that explain the terms (very helpful) and so on. BUT -- every twenty pages or so there is a passage so clumsy in its Anglo-German syntax that I had to read it over five times and then copy-edit it in pencil so I could understand it. I don't know the competing translations, they may be no better. This was better than adequate, but with the noted flaw.

Once one becomes familiar with Kant's special terminology, Kant's aesthetics unfold in amazing way. It's probably best to start with an overview such as Copleston's "History of Philosophy".The one criticism I would offer is that Kant, however brilliantly insightful, clearly was not an artist. His insistence on there being no rules for beauty may seem true for the average non-artist person and create mediation between supersensibles (and give rise to much bad art in the process). But at the very least, there are really big hints as to how we perceive beauty, gestalt psychology being an example. Otherwise, as art history has proven, there is no universal validity to beauty.Edit: One month, two readings and the binding has already failed.

This book is for students who are pursuing an advanced level in philosophy, Immanuel Kant is one of the most difficult philosophers to 'decode'. Genius though on all levels, one professor referred to him as the game changer in philosophy.

During that time I remember only "trying to learn the movements", and the "relaxation instructions"... Honestly...I did not learn anything... with the years and a lot, a lot of more reading about Taiji and learning directly from experts, and seen daily the amount of "youtube"'s information...then you one start to "understand" Taiji a little... and when you can find so many different versions and "styles" of ONE ART.... then you understand that most of them had not grasp the real true meaning of taiji... there may be not one true but many... Then one open his eyes and start 'understanding" it... it will take time to UNDERSTAND Taiji... This is an excellent book! But understand that this is just a book... even a good one... but YOU WILL NEVER LEARN TAICHI WITH A BOOK!!

I practice this specific style of Tai Chi. This book is the one that I have used for 20 years to remind me what I am supposed to be doing. There are pictures with each posture, though in the e-book mode, often they are on the next page or the previous page - not the author's fault, just a casualty of the e-book age. The steps of the Yang Style, short form, are here. The exact steps are here. Do this. Then do that. Then put your hand here. This is, often, what I need to be reminded what I learned, or what I should have learned.There are other books about the various styles of Tai Chi, there are videos on YouTube, DVD's galore: For me, this book is a must-have for my Tai Chi e-bookshelf: I do this form. He wrote the book! All I have to do, is do it!

This is the book I first used to learn this form. Although its not the easiest to learn from it does have photos of Cheng Man -Ching doing the postures so you know they are correct!

I practice a different style of tai chi than Professor Chen Man Ching does but I can tell from reading the book that he is one of the greatest tai chi masters ever. There are five different styles of tai chi but many of the principles are the same. Anyone who practices tai chi could benefit from reading this excellent book.

I bought this book as a teenager (17 or 18 ) but I gave it away hoping it would help the person who I gave it to. Today I just received another copy of it. As for the book it is great and for those who are do it yourself type of person, the benefits obtain are great if you master the form and the mentality.Good luck.

This book, like Zheng's 37 posture form itself, is accurate, concise, and filled with qi (ch'i).It was one of the first good English language books on taijiquan (t'ai chi ch'uan) and contains history, philosophy, the form, and sensing hands applications. It also has an interesting 'mirror image' format to the pictures, and a diagram of the locations of each posture in the form.It is well known that anything Robert W. Smith writes on martial arts is gold. When combined with Zheng's taijiquan, that gold turns to diamond!

I like the descriptions but the photos show positions reverse to the descriptions (e.g., left rather than right), which is very confusing and therefore limits its usefulness.

Outstanding Tai Chi book for the someone wanting to learn the short form of Ch'eng Man-ching. Has foot positions you can copy to put up on wall and is an excellent reference for the serious student.

Many of the old books of this genre I read are written as if the natives are children or savages who need conversion, education and enlightenment. Edward Beauclerk Maurice impressed me with his acceptance of the culture and beliefs of the Inuit/Eskimo people among which he lived for several years. He learned their language and lived among them, sharing their food, clothing and homes, meanwhile growing from a teenager into a man. Maurice recounts his years as a clerk at a Hudson Bay trading post with so much honesty, self deprecating humor and respect that you can't help but like him. Because he was so young (16) when he was first apprenticed to the Hudson Bay Company, he relied on the older men in the village to teach him to hunt, trap, fish and survive. Eventually he becomes a respected man and hunter, but he was reassigned unwillingly to another post every year until his contract was fulfilled.I thought it was sad that he didn't return to the Arctic later in his life, and it's unfortunate that this is the only book he wrote about his experiences.After I finished the book, I re-read the forward by Lawrence Millman. I got a lot more out of it after getting to know the characters and the story.

Of the many, many books I've read involving Arctic expeditions and experiences, this one is one of the best, among the ranks of Gontran De Poncins' 'Kabloona' and Vladimir Albanov's 'In The Land of the White Death.' I found it to have a lot in common with 'Kabloona': while the locations are rather far, the experiences are similar. 'The Last Gentleman Adventurer' also provides a lot of information about the Hudson's Bay Company, which is a fascinating chapter in northern Canadian history.At the time of the documented experiences, this young man was essentially alone (in the beginning among 2 others) in one of the most remote outposts on earth. His interest and respect for Inuit life develops and broadens throughout the book, and in his adventures he meets many different characters. What is delightful about this character is that he sees the Inuit with respect to his own morals, ethics and upbringing, but without judging them. He spends a number of years in Pangnirtung and moves down to Frobisher Bay. Curiously, his last year (alluded to in the novel to be spent at Southampton Island) was not documented in the book, and I am unsure of why.I found his relationships with the Inuit people in this book to be very inspiring; his encounters with the often harsh world around him allowed him to grow and adapt. While frustration was often present with one situation or another, he left his post at Ward Inlet with an incredible love and respect for his Inuit friends; while warned in the beginning not to become too wrapped up with "those people," it is the curiosity and willingness to learn that makes this novel, 'Kabloona' and also the adventures of Stefansson incredibly interesting. While whaling and exploration often exploited the talents of the Arctic people, there are few memoirs of people who sought to learn and survive with their knowledge.

A compelling narrative about the experience of a very young man from the U.K. going to work for the Hudsons Bay Company in the Eastern Arctic during the Great Depression. Life was tough and harrowing, and yet rewarding in terms of unique experiences and warm relationships. It brought back some memories for me regarding my experiences in the Eastern, Western and High Arctic during the Seventies and early Eightes....

This was an amazing book. I just loved it. I have read so many adventure, biography and history books. But this one filled a completely different notch. I wish I had words to explain how I connected with his story. I am not implying I am a gentleman or explorer. It is a reflection on his writing. I recommend this book to everyone that would like to see a bigger, better world.

A fascinating book by a truly skillful writer. I admit to being put off a bit put by the fact that the author and his childhood friend (both uncontrollable danger junkies) took off on their insanely hazardous journey (to paddle the largely uncharted Niger River hundreds of miles through jungle, desert and local war zones) when both their wives were pregnant, an indulgence I thought somehow hung over the narrative like a shadow. That said, the tale Jenkins spins is epic, a remarkable chronicle of will and courage, and he tells it with a fresh, imagistic, you-are-there kind of prose characteristic of only the best travel writers. If you like harrowing, virile adventure stories with a touch of existential rumination thrown in you won't be disappointed with this one.

As an accomplished long-distance motorcycle rider, and owner of the formidable BMW R100GSPD (Paris-Dakar) Offroad Adventure Tourer, I had been long fascinated by Timbuktu. When terrorists and Taureg raiders ambushed rally racers in recent years, and the Dakar rally moved to South America, this book explains why this has been a land barred to Western adventurers for many centuries. These are true stories of both recent and historical attempts of intrepid travelers to reach the legendary city, and was for me an opportunity to live vicariously through their attempts, struggles, defeats and eventual success without mortal risk.

This is a wonderful adventure narrative written by a white American from Wyoming about an adventure (undertaken sometime in the early 1990s) kayaking West Africa's Niger River with his best friend. Along the way Jenkins (the author) & company locate the source of the Niger (with help from an African guide, of course), are swarmed by bees, upended by crocodiles, and charged by hippopottami. Some of my favorite passages are Jenkins' descriptions of his encounters with Africans and African culture. In this regard, in Guinea, where Jenkins &Co reach the literal end of the road, and in order to continue their journey, find it neccesary to hire local porters. There being an insufficient number of willing men available to accomodate Jenkins' request in the village where they've landed, the method by which members of this village communicate Jenkins' need to the next village miles away is, in my mind, worth the price of the book.Jenkins' writing is sometimes uneccesarily flowery, at least to my taste. But that criticism in no way takes away from the book's beauty and the strength of its storytelling.

I went to high school and was on the swim team with the author so I knew the four major characters of this book. It was a compelling read and the photos took me back. Objectively, it was well written and the subject matter alone will keep your interest!

great book with the mix of history and the story line. I head it with my class of 7/ graders and while I had to 'retract' a handful of choice words and a few passages they enjoyed it realness of it. Maybe better for 9th grade.

Good book, Takes a bit of reading to get into but once you are hooked its a great book.

_To Timbukutu_ by Mark Jenkins is an enjoyable and quick read, more adventure travel writing than anything though with some history and a little commentary woven through it. Essentially, the book is one main narrative interspersed with two other narratives. The heart of the book is the account of how the author and three of his friends reached the head of the Niger River in West Africa and were able to journey down its most dangerous sections in kayaks, starting where the river was barely large enough for their one-man boats, contending with rapids, waterfalls, debris in the water, wild currents, hippos, and crocodiles. This main narrative would break from time to time to follow one of two other narratives; either describing adventures the author and one of his friends on the current expedition had in Europe and mostly in Africa a number of years ago (fresh out of high school) or an account of the legion of (very unlucky) European explorers who tried to solve the questions of the source and even the direction the Niger River flowed as well as the location of the fabled city of Timbuktu. I really liked Jenkin's writing style as he was quite descriptive and very witty. I loved how he described in his story of himself and his friend Mike, bored with Europe, when they both decided to go to Africa. "It was a word from the boundlessness of childhood. Big and deep as the sky." Or how he described that there were only certain times in your life when you can do certain things, such as to go out to see the world. If you waited too long to go, "the seeds of cynicism and fearfulness have already taken root and you shall be a loathsome traveler." A good book, for once I don't have a lot to say about something I have read. While not action-movie standards of adventure, Jenkins did describe an interesting experience. While he didn't give as detailed a portrait of the lives of Africans as other books I have read, there were some very memorable scenes and people in this book. I liked reading about the many explorers who attempted the Niger and to reach Timbuktu, though I had read much of that before and in greater detail. I guess what I liked most was his writing style; his put-you-there descriptiveness of what he saw and experienced.

Very good coverage and easy to follow instructions. Unlike my teen children, I do not find it obvious how to use the thousands of features on this phone. Yes, I could figure out the basics re: how to make calls, text, and answer my email, but there's a lot of cool things this phone does that are not intuitive to the over-30 crowd. I liken it to not knowing all the features / tricks of microsoft office products (which interestingly my kids ask me about when they get stuck !) I am enjoying customizing the phone features and using more than just the basic capabilities. I find the book is also well organized for finding directions when there is something I want to do with the phone, but don't know the commands for.

This book is a godsend. It is technical enough to cover almost every one of my questions, but detailed enough so that I can answer them. I sit with it next to the phone and carefully read each chapter and then try it out.

Having new owned an iPhone I was intrigued by all the people I know who have owned one and currently own one, and especially in them saying "how easy they are to use". I do have to say that the initial set-up is quite easy but if you rely only on the "official user guide" to learn how to really use the phone you will be sorely disappointed. This book in my opinion is absolutely outstanding in its clarity, easy to read format and especially the inclusion of extremely clear and detailed pictures of everything that is being explained. I learned a tremendous amount about my iPhone and its various settings and capabilities that I otherwise would have never known or found out about. Needless to say it would be impossible to remember "everything" that you learn after reading the entire book but it will remain an outstanding reference when I do forget how to do something. I will be getting my wife an iPhone also in the near future and at that point I will again read the book cover to cover to be sure to set her phone up exactly as she wants it. I give this book my highest recommendation for anyone that really wants to get to know their iPhone inside and out.

I just started reading this book, so mi comment is about an omission. the few other sections that I read have been well done. Recently, I learned that all downloads from the App Store are AppleID specific. In other words, when you install a free or paid app from the App store, the email address that you entered as your AppleID is stored with the information about your downloaded app. As long as your email address remains the same, you can download all future updates for the app. However, if you change primary email address and decide to update your AppleID, you cannot update any apps that were downloaded with the previous email address. The solution is to uninstall the app and then re-download it from the app store so it can now be attached to the new email address. This process must be repeated each time you find yourself entering your Apple ID password and you get the error message that the Apple ID does not match the database. The best solution is to use an email that you won't have to change, ever. Names like JoeSmith@MicroCorp.com would be a poor choice if you left the company. Likewise, using a name like JoeSmith@ATTglobal.net would make it difficult to switch from ATT to Comcast. The best choice is probably a Web-based email account like Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.If you only have a few apps, it's not a big deal, but if you have many this process becomes a real nagging chore.

But if you’ve had 2 or 3 versions of your iPhone the book doesn’t go deep enough on any one subject. No fault of the book, it’s a great introduction for new users, especially with color illustrations, which really won me over.But if you are a legacy owner of the iPhone, you are better off searching The Web.

If you want to impress someone, buy them this book.It weighs about 3 lbs !!It's fairly complete, too, although not so good with shortcuts and tricks.You won't find any "Easter Eggs", either.This book is straight forward, well organized, and servers well as a reference.Every family should have one on hand, because Apple didn't write much - just expensive commercials.Somethings are intuitive, but for the rest of the world, they appreciate some hints and names for features or applications.

This books is an excellent guide to the features in iOS7 on your iPhone and the mastering of how to use them. I don't recall ever seeing the use of color to illustrate 'how tos' done as well as in this book. It's not an inexpensive book as far a these books go; but if what you want buy is comprehensiveness and clarity it really is inexpensive.

Great illustrations & easily understood text. Wouldn’t be without this one - learn in-depth what this phone is really capable of doing for you!
