Awesomeness and so so needed. This is really a book for the family (mainly the siblings) of a child with autism. But it's also great for the parents and I think other kids with autism may recognize a bit of themselves in "Charlie." I would like to address some of the criticisms others wrote about the book on goodreads-as a Mom to a teenage son with autism, I really got this book. The sister Callie does not hate her brother-she has NORMAL feelings for any sibling who has to cope with having someone in their family with special needs. And being close twins, she says she feels his pain as well as his joy. It's a struggle for her-she is a teenage girl trying to find her way and fit in at the same time. Some people wanted Charlie's voice to be stronger. Welcome to autism people. We all wish they would talk and express more. The only time that seems to happen is in a meltdown and that's when you wish they would be quiet. I think he gets the point across that he is okay in his own skin, but can feel awkward and distant from others (can any teen relate to this? I think so). We see more from the others how his life gets manipulated around him to prevent meltdowns and stress. Because that is how it actually is. Some people argued that it should have not been fictionalized. That could go either way. But because I think they were trying to relate to many people, they included compilations (i.e. maybe the special ed teacher incident?) and they were being upfront and honest by saying these aren't our experiences, but others have had them. I'm sure they had plenty of examples from their own lives to draw from-but these are teenagers. Perhaps they would like a little privacy and keep some of their pain to themselves. I think this was a breakthrough book because you hear the point of view of a sibling and also that the child with autism is a teenager. We are so used to reading about young kids-when they are diagnosed, etc. that we forget they grow up. They have normal teenage angst and then autism on top of that. As a parent, I found it incredibly relatable. We have gone through so many similar things, that it was astounding. I walked away after reading this with new perspectives on autism as well as feeling like the teens in the book did. That although everyone has their problems/issues, especially in their teenage years, when you can create a strong family bond and have each others backs, you will get through it all with a smile.

I am the proud mom of 2 boys (ages 11 and 14) who have Autism and let me tell you it's an amazing journey but not an easy one. It's the biggest challenge my family has had to face but it's worth it because I wouldn't change my boys for anything. Reading this book really made me feel better about their future and a stronger feeling of hope for what is ahead for their future. The Peete's are an incredible family and they are "Team RJ" all the way. The Peete's journey had to be shared and I am glad they finally wrote this book. It's a must read even if your life hasn't been touched by Autism. In that department, I am doubly blessed.

While reading this book as an educator who has run social skills groups for high school students with autism, I found a lot of the questions and responses provided by the twins--one with and one without autism--to be helpful stepping off points for student consideration and discussion. I also think the book would be a helpful family resource for those who are dealing with autism at home, no matter what the age level of the children involved, as it provides different points of view--one from outside the autism cloak and one from inside it. I especially appreciated the input of the twin who does not have autism (Callie/Ryan), as it is important to remember that a serious disability affects all members of a family in unique ways and some people are better able to cope than are others.

If you have a child with autism, I recommend you read this book out loud with them. It gave me great insight into my son and my son great insight into himself.

Reading about the experiences of teenage autism in this book continued to educate me on the daily struggles for the person with autism, and those who love them. It was especially gratifying for me to read aloud excerpts later to my 5th grade students. There were a lot of good discussions that arose from the situations in the story. It taught all of us to be more empathetic.

Great insight on the challenges of raising a child on the spectrum. Especially from a sibling's view. Great information on resources at the end of the book also. A must read for everyone.

This book is amazing! My autistic grandson read this and got a lot out of it. Thanks so much for taking the time to share what a teen feels like and goes through being autistic.

Asa mom of a teen with autism, I was very excited to read a book that comes from the point of view of an actual teenager. I notice sometimes that I push too much (like most mothers of teenagers). I realized that I have to allow him to be independent at times and not constantly hover

Secret Historian: The Life and Times of Samuel Steward, Professor, Tattoo Artist, and Sexual Renegade, by Justin Spring

From Publishers Weekly

Life in the closet proves boisterous indeed in this biography of an iconic figure of the pre-Stonewall gay demimonde. Steward (1909–1993) was an English professor, a novelist who wrote both well-received literary fiction and gay porn, a confidant of Gertrude Stein and Thornton Wilder, a furtive but exuberant erotic adventurer whose taste for sailors, rough trade, and violent sadomasochism endeared him to sex researcher Alfred Kinsey; later in life, he became Phil Sparrow, official tattoo artist of the Oakland, Calif., Hell's Angels. Spring (Paul Cadmus) fleshes out this colorful story by quoting copiously from his subject's highly literate journals and sex diaries—his Stud File contained entries on trysts with everyone from Rudolph Valentino to Rock Hudson—which afford an unabashed account of Steward's erotic picaresque and the yearnings that drove it. (His swerve from academia into tattooing, with its mix of physical pain and proximity to nubile male flesh, was essentially a fetish turned into a business.) Spring's sympathetic and entertaining story of a life registers the limitations imposed on homosexuals by a repressive society, but also celebrates the creativity and daring with which Steward tested them. Review

“Somewhere in the United States, there may be an attic containing the written remnants of a previously unchronicled 20th-century life that was even more astonishing than the one the writer Justin Spring discovered in San Francisco a few years ago. But even the most skeptical reader of his new book, Secret Historian, will have to admit that the bar is now set high. Samuel Steward, the subject of this absorbing act of biographical excavation, had many identities, including several that the subtitle of the book omits . . . Be assured that it's all for real, and that Spring, even when neck-deep in sensational material, is not a sensationalist. As a biographer, he's humble but firm--he lets Steward's vivid, energetic prose do much of the talking but keeps his own hand on the tiller and never gets giddy, even when Steward seems to be carousing his way through the entire Modern Library . . . The probity and expansive vision of Spring's work is a reminder that a great, outspread terrain of gay history remains to be mapped . . . One suspects there are many more stories of that time worth telling, and too few treasure-packed attics.” ―Mark Harris, The New York Times Book Review“Can a secret sex diary furnish an artistic legacy as meaningful as Emily Dickinson's sewn-up bundles of poems, or the piles of paintings Theo van Gogh inherited after his brother's premature demise? Samuel Steward may never have imagined it, but his erotic history raises the question. A talented writer who early attracted the attention of Gertrude Stein and Thornton Wilder, he found his career blocked by a determination (so different from hers and his) to write candidly about his homosexuality . . . Steward was an obsessive record keeper, and his journals and his ‘Stud File' of thousands of encounters allow [Justin Spring] to create a remarkably full portrait of a man whose life was what Edmund White's might have been had White been born three decades earlier . . . [This] extensive documentation--and the miraculous rescue of that documentation, recounted in the book's preface--left his biographer material to reconstruct an emblematic homosexual life.” ―Benjamin Moser, Harper's“Justin Spring's jaw-dropping Secret Historian reads like a novel probing a lifelong rebel's courage, creativity and ultimate sadness . . . Spring has reconstituted Steward, as Phil Andros might say, in flesh and blood and all sorts of bodily fluids.” ―David D'Arcy, San Francisco Chronicle“This is a rich and exuberant biography of a man who deserves to be better known” ―The Economist“A fascinating biography . . . [Steward] tackled life with awe-inspiring abandon” ―Details“Life in the closet proves boisterous indeed in this biography of an iconic figure of the pre-Stonewall gay demimonde . . . Spring's sympathetic and entertaining story of a life registers the limitations imposed on homosexuals by a repressive society, but also celebrates the creativity and daring with which Steward tested them.” ―Publishers Weekly“[A] provocative biography . . . Generous excerpts from Steward's journals and unpublished memoirs fortify an already comprehensive examination of a life lived with unabashed independence and homoerotic expression during the sexual rebellion of the pre-Stonewall era . . . A vivid, candid portrait.” ―Kirkus Reviews“Justin Spring documents the extraordinary life of one of Kinsey's crucial gay witnesses, and reading Secret Historian is like reading Kinsey dramatized. A cultivated, rather shy professor of English literature, Sam Steward dropped out in midlife to become an eminent tattooist and writer of S&M porn. As the story of a sex-obsessed recovering alcoholic later addicted to barbiturates and to masochistic thrills, this could easily have become a portrait of a failure. Instead, through Steward's copious records, we have a brave, fly-on-the-wall account of American homosexual subculture and persecution.” ―Martin Stannard, author of Evelyn Waugh and Muriel Spark: The Biography“A true page-turner--and a memorable act of historical reclamation. Sammy Steward is all but unknown except by a handful of historians, but Justin Spring's lively biography--which is full of important new information about pre-Stonewall gay life--should put Sammy on the map, which is where he decidedly belongs.” ―Martin Duberman, author of Cures: A Gay Man's Odyssey“Secret Historian is a startlingly, unforgettably vivid glimpse into a life--and a world--that few of us can imagine.” ―Terry Teachout, author of Pops: A Life of Louis Armstrong“Samuel Steward, secret sexual historian, is a secret no longer. From an evangelical Ohio boardinghouse to the gardens of the Villa Borghese, from the lobby of the City Opera to the South Side YMCA, Steward led--and recorded--an improbably revealing, representative life. Bedding Oscar Wilde's Bosie, taking tea with Stein and Toklas, and confessing to (and performing for!) Dr. Kinsey, he seemed determined to leave no corner of twentieth-century American queer culture unexplored and undocumented. Justin Spring has rescued his story from a San Francisco attic and set it before twenty-first-century readers with unflagging patience, authority, and humanity--Secret Historian is a major achievement.” ―Langdon Hammer, author of Hart Crane and Allen Tate“Justin Spring has painstakingly and compassionately unearthed the labyrinthine world of a brilliant, multifaceted, and troubled creator. A classically educated and highly talented renegade intellectual, Steward's trajectory was impacted at every turn by his sexual compulsions. This bittersweet story, with its hair-raising and obsessively recorded details, is astonishing. Steward's humor, empathy, and refusal to bow to the repressive status quo are a moving testimonial to honesty, courage, and integrity. His story should resonate with anyone engaged in the ongoing struggle for personal freedom of identity.” ―Ed Hardy“This is a rare and important book. Secret Historian is a genuinely captivating combination of clear writing, a clean conscience, and more dirty stories than I ever imagined one life could hold.” ―Debby Applegate, author of The Most Famous Man in America: The Biography of Henry Ward Beecher

"Secret Historian: The Life and Times of Samuel Steward, Professor, Tattoo Artist, and Sexual Renegade" by Justin Spring, 2011I quite liked this book. Samuel Steward, aka Phil Andros and Phil Sparrow, led a remarkable life, as the subtitle described, as a university professor, novelist, tattoo artist, photographer and pornographer. The "secret historian" angle comes in as he was a fanatical chronicler of his own sex life, and an aggressive sex life it was. He kept a "Stud File" with all the data. The record keeping attracted the attention of Alfred Kinsey, who much valued Steward's records and observations (and photographs). He also counted among his friends a who's who of the literary world, and was great friends with Gertrude Stein and Alice B Toklas. He later turned his correspondence with them into a book. His escapades included Thornton Wilder, Lord Alfred Douglas, Thomas Mann, André Gide, and Rock Hudson and his friendships brought in Paul Cadmus, George Platt Lynes, and in later years Chuck Renslow and Dom Orejudos (Etienne). By the end of his life his "Stud File" totaled 807 people and over 5000, er, events. The book is not a quick read, as it's very detailed. Spring is quite meticulous in detailing Steward's life, and while it describes a whole lot of sex, it doesn't get exploitative with the details...it's not a sexy book. Steward's life (he died in1993 at age 84) covers much of the last century and certainly those pre-Stonewall times are especially of interest.

There are many brilliant portions of this book (childhood, early Paris, tattooing) that really paint a picture of Steward and the world in which he lived. These parts are sometimes shocking and/or funny, and may not be for everybody, but I certainly enjoyed the living heck out of them. These parts are heavily weighed down by the other sections where the author's writing is almost as painfully dry as a college textbook. Most noticeable example for me was the recounting of 30+ stud file entries and Steward's sex life in general during in spintriae period, where you might see three different encounters described one after another.Still, overall I DO recommend reading it from beginning to end. The author has obviously put in a great deal of research and effort into the book, and you can always skip ahead a little if you start to feel like you're studying for a midterm.

Samuel Steward could have very well remained little more than a popular and closeted university professor for his entire life. But instead, he left "the ivied nursery", as he refers to academia, and jumped into real life with both feet. The title "Secret Historian" is unfortunate, as it implies a passive observer, watching and chronicling history safely from the sidelines. But Steward was no lurker (except perhaps when he was cruising the back alleys of Chicago, seeking sex with like-minded men). Instead, he was an active participant in many aspects of society and history, and created any number of snippets of history himself along the way.Because of his interactions with so many levels of society for so long (from Gertrude Stein to the Hells Angels), and his extensive notes, writings, letters, and detailed documentation of his sexual contacts with other men (which remarkably averaged about 4 per week from the 1920's through the 1970's), he's left behind a vast archive of data regarding gay life in the days before Stonewall. Those 80 boxes of Stewards writings and artifacts would probably still be moldering in the attic where they were found, or worse, tossed out, if not for the clearly heroic efforts of the author of this biography, who tracked them down, saved them, and then managed to make sense of it all.Steward is quoted extensively in the book, and he comes across as warm, extremely intelligent, very funny, down-to-earth, moral, and a keen observer of human nature, not to mention an excellent writer. He is a very sympathetic character, and by the end of the book, I had grown to like him a great deal.I found the first 1/3 of the book very interesting. Steward's active gay sex life as a teen and young man in a small town in Ohio in the days just after World War I are something that I would not have thought possible. The middle 1/3 of the book, during which Steward is a professor and writer, was not particularly exciting. The last 1/3 is the best, as Steward seems to break free of conventional society, as well as an addiction to alcohol, becoming a noted tattoo artist, and later, a writer of a series of critically acclaimed leather-oriented erotic stories, among many other things. (In fact, I now know that the Phil Andros stories that had so titillated me in my youth were actually written by Steward.)Steward gets five stars for a fascinating life, well-lived. The author gets five stars for unbelievable effort and thoroughness. But the book only gets 4 stars, because it can bog down at times with a lot of detail, as it strikes a balance between being an unparalleled academic work, and entertaining reading.

Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity, by David Lynch

From Booklist

Author David Foster Wallace once observed that, as a filmmaker, David Lynch seems to care more about getting inside the heads of his viewers than about communicating a particular message to them once he's inside. With this book, Lynch offers us a rare glimpse into his own head. A longtime practitioner of transcendental meditation, a set of meditation practices popular in the 1960s, Lynch is primarily interested in communicating to readers the powerful creative vitality that he has tapped through meditation. In 85 brief, airy chapters--many koanlike and some only a sentence or two long--Lynch discusses the techniques with which he expands his consciousness, catches ideas, and gives form to abstraction. (It's not all lofty stuff: milkshakes are, it turns out, a key vehicle for creativity.) In the process, he reveals just enough biographical information, philosophy of film, and general behind-the-scenes dirt (including the connection between Lynch's Lost Highway and O. J. Simpson)to keep the attention of those more interested in Lynch's films than in his consciousness. Brendan DriscollCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Review

“The quirky helmer known for Boy Scout demeanor and twisted tales shares his creative vision in a surprisingly gentle tome informed by the underlying teachings of Transcendental Meditation. But don’t worry: David Lynch, one-time creator of “The Angriest Dog in the World” comic, keeps the proselytizing to a minimum. He addresses topics ranging from working with wood (for it) to director’s commentaries (against) in deceptively simple, yet ultimately affirming, chapters. There’s much for fans and aspiring filmmakers to enjoy.”—Variety “Ideas are like fish. If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch the big fish, you've got to go deeper," says David Lynch the idiosyncratic filmmaker whose creations include Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire, and the cult TV classic, Twin Peaks. He claims that he has savored the pleasures of diving deep thanks to a 33-year practice of Transcendental Meditation (TM). He describes the fun of gathering what he calls "firewood" (all kinds of ideas and things for a film), the joy he takes in seeing an aging building or a rusted bridge, and the respect he has for Fellini and Kubrick. Lynch loves making movies and diving deep, and this testament bears witness to both loves.”—Spirituality & Practice “In Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity, David Lynch puts aside his filmic quest to get inside the viewer’s head and lets them instead inside his, an invitation almost as rare as a ticket to fiction’s Wonka Chocolate Factory, and possibly just as out of this world. Catching the Big Fish is a blend of thoughts and themes, sometimes random like a stream of consciousness, or — the analogy he personally prefers for creativity — casting a hook into a bottomless sea. The book melds biography, film analysis, philosophy and spirituality with a heart-on-sleeve sincerity, while incorporating a narrative of the author’s passion for charting the world of dreams and ideas and rendering them unto action.”—BlogCritics “With this book, Lynch offers us a rare glimpse into his own head. In the process, he reveals just enough biographical information, philosophy of film, and general behind-the-scenes dirt (including the connection between Lynch's Lost Highway and O. J. Simpson)to keep the attention of those more interested in Lynch's films than in his consciousness.”—Booklist

David Lynch is my soul brother, it was great reading his thoughts and prose in this book, I wish it were longer.

I should start off my review by saying that I enjoyed this book and would recommend it highly. I purchased this book partially on whim after hearing verry little about it. I've always been fascinated by art and have been a musican since I was verry young. Recently I've been creativity frustrated and have been branching out into various adventures from exploring more interesting film to starting a modest meditation practice.I recived my copy of the book after getting off work and finished it verry quickly. It's a verry easy read, its only 180 pages and around 80 something chapters. Each of the chapters explore various topics from film makers David Lynch admires to his meditation practice. This book feels like sitting down with David Lynch for an evening and just enjoying his unique perspective of the world. I treasure this book and it has inspired me.

Overall, it was a good book, but it is a reallyquick read. Easily read the whole book over a weekend. If reading because want to know more about Transcendental Meditation, you will probably want to get an additional book or 2. It is interesting to hear David discuss TM, his TM foundation, and interview others who practice TM, but if looking for a better understanding of the latest Scientific research on TM, probably want to pick up the book that David said was “the best-ever book on on Transcendental Meditation”. Book is Transcendence written by Doctor Rosenthall. That said, reading David’s book has motivated me to re-watch his films/show. Interesting to watch Twin Peaks after reading this. Main character meditates, and can see how ideas expressed in this book are sprinkled throughout the show.

This is a pile of garbage advertising his meditation program; found a nice home for the book in the trashcan. This book has nothing to do with creativity or meditation, but for the low low introductory price of just $1000 you can go to his school for TM meditation, and get your catchy meditation catch phrase.

This book has a lot of interesting information in it. David Lynch talks about his experience with Transcendental Meditation and its positive effects on him. He also talks about his strategies for living a life as an artist. And there are several different pages about the movies he's made, the actors in them, and his thoughts on film in general. His biggest points are the importance of healthy living, the importance of meditation, and being your natural self. His advice for creativity, I thought, was pretty helpful for just about any artistic medium. The book is pretty short. It doesn't go super in depth into any one topic. Mr. Lynch spends about a page or two on each idea. It's really interesting to hear everything in his direct voice, but some more detail would have been nice.I loved how positive David Lynch seemed in the whole book. About the biggest thing I took from the book was his advice on being healthy yourself. He says, for an artist, you have to understand things like depression to create conflict in a story. But, if you, yourself, are depressed, it will be very hard to create. So he suggests different ways throughout the book to keep yourself healthy and still make art. This was a great way to see into David Lynch's world through his own words. There's lots of great words, advice, and information, but it is very brief. But, if you're interested in David Lynch and his approach to life strategy, it's a great book.

As a professional artist, I was really curious to find out what the esteemed Mr. Lynch had to say about the creative process. I really respect his work and admire his talent. This book is filled with fun anecdotes and a few gems of insight but mostly it reads as an ad for Transcendental Meditation. It seems over 40% of the book is him talking about how he loves TM. I was so intrigued by his passion for TM that I attended an intro lecture in town.....which ultimately turns into a sales pitch for meditation instruction for....wait for it....$950!!! Why is it so expensive? Smells fishy to me.

The book captures and inspires the Minds and Hearts of its readers. It is catchy, enlightening and touch the vast reservoir of creative intelligence found in each and Every one of us at the level of pure consciousness. It is Unique because it captures and presents th is ancient wisdom in a condensed manner. Yet it is not like the paradoxes found in coans. It is more like Deep and golden wisdom passed in from one Heart and mund to another. It touch es and transforms

Lots of nice little passages on various topics mostly having to do with Lynch's career and meditation. If you're a fan, it's great. If not, I'm not sure you'll get much out of it.

I read some of the reviews and was curious about David Lynch's connection with meditation and his creativity. I'll admit I have only seen one Lynch product (Blue Velvet) which I found to be an excellent though bizarre film. The book kind of goes through his thoughts on life, meditation, making films and creative methods. It is a short read and feels like reading someone's thoughts that are jotted down in no particular order. I guess I was looking for a book that would really getting into the hows and whys of Mr. Lynch's creative process and meditation method vs. short thoughts, feelings and opinions. I guess if you are a huge fan of Mr. Lynch this book would give you bits and pieces of his thought process. Overall, I thought the book was just o.k.

The Hidden White House: Harry Truman and the Reconstruction of America’s Most Famous Residence, by Robert Klara

Review

“Robert Klara's The Hidden White House will give you unique insight into the building our presidents live and work in. A tour de force narrative, this detailed history will give you a one-of-a-kind look into America's most famous house.” ―Newt Gingrich, New York Times bestselling author of Victory at Yorktown“Robert Klara brings the White House--its occupants, its rooms, even its swinging chandeliers--vividly to life in this gripping work of history. The book is rich with historical and architectural detail, and Klara, a brilliant storyteller, shows us why Truman's plan to restore the White House was an act not only of necessity, but of audacity.” ―Jeff Shesol, former speechwriter to President Bill Clinton and author of Supreme Power: Franklin Roosevelt vs. the Supreme Court“Robert Klara has crafted an unexpected and captivating story of the overhaul of America's most famous residence. While every first family lends its own personal touch to the White House, it is usually in the form of china patterns and drapes. President Truman, on the other hand, had the place gutted―because it was threatening to collapse around him. From bathtubs to bomb shelters, Klara leaves no piece of crumbling sandstone unturned and is as astute a storyteller as he is a dogged researcher. His efforts have resulted in a rich and layered look at this unique episode in American history. Hidden White House is populated by complicated and quirky characters but Klara wisely saves the spotlight for the real star, The White House herself, as she narrowly escapes annihilation. We can be thankful she survived, imperfections and all, and that Klara has brought her story to light.” ―Denise Kiernan, New York Times bestselling author of Girls of Atomic City“Money troubles, war with congress, fights with patriotic societies, an attempted assassination of the President, the building of an atom bomb shelter, lost contents – the saga of the gutting and recreation of the "Great White Jail" that is the nation's White House is as dramatic as was Truman's presidency. In Robert Klara's riveting yet scholarly account it becomes no less than the story of America, as the U.S. becomes the world's foremost superpower – with the reconstructed White House its symbolic and literal heart.” ―Nigel Hamilton, author, American Caesars: Lives of the Presidents, From Franklin D. Roosevelt to George W. Bush“A delightful and informative narrative… Klara brings the reconstruction’s major players―including Truman and his family, architect Lorenzo Winslow, and contractor John McShain―to life in sharp prose, infusing this cracks-and-crevices expose with plenty of entertaining drama.” ―Publishers Weekly“Robert Klara has proven the old adage to be true -- if walls could speak what stories they would tell! Ghosts. Diplomats. Washington backscratching. The Hidden White House has it all in a fabulous romp across the landscape of American history as viewed through the prism of our most iconic residence. Hats off to Klara! A beautifully written book filled with quirky characters and amazing stories.” ―L. Douglas Keeney, author of 15 Minutes: General Curtis LeMay and the Countdown to Nuclear Annihilation“There's a story that when Ronald Reagan first arrived at the White House, he asked to see the ‘War Room,' presuming it looked just like the screen version from Dr. Strangelove. Which is to say, we all have our fantasies about the hidden life behind the stately white columns of America's most famous home--most of them false. Robert Klara's entertaining secret history of White House tells how it became the place we think we know but don't, proving the adage that truth can be stranger than fiction.” ―Mark Lamster, architecture critic, Dallas Morning News“Robert Klara's The Hidden White House serves as a landmark study of the post-World War II redefinition of America's premier residence. Thoroughly researched and engagingly written, this book casts deserved new attention on a favorite subject, highlighting the masterful walking of the fine line between preserving an historic shrine and fabricating a modern fortress and television-ready backdrop. Whether historian, architect, or homeowner (fresh from the throes of your own renovation), The Hidden White House affords an entertaining history lesson.” ―James Archer Abbott, director and curator, Johns Hopkins University's Evergreen Museum and Library; author of Designing Camelot: The Kennedy White House Restoration“Gossipy… Characters, famous and relatively obscure, flit in and out of the narrative, creating frequently humorous situations…. Enjoyable.” ―Booklist“Klara's focused history will intrigue architectural history enthusiasts along with presidential history buffs and others who will appreciate a part of White House history that has been forgotten by many.” ―Library Journal“In the manner of Bob Greene's Once Upon a Town or Jody Rosen's White Christmas . . . Klara charms as he informs. A little gem.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred) on FDR's Funeral Train“Klara has put together a thrilling piece of history. . . . [he] has managed to provide a fresh look at history as well as the political landscape of the twenty–first century.” ―The Daily Beast on FDR's Funeral Train“Full of fascinating anecdotes. . . . This is popular history at its best: engaging, informative and insightful. It is very well written and . . . a pure pleasure to read . . . sheds welcome light on a fascinating and largely forgotten episode.” ―Christian Science Monitor on FDR's Funeral Train

The Hidden White House by Robert Klara is an extremely interesting book and covers a subject that I admittedly knew very little about. President Harry Truman authorized the rebuilding of the White House in 1948 after he almost plunged through the ceiling of the Blue Room while enjoying a bath. Good that he didn't, because he would have ended up in a DAR tea party. The mansion was inspected and found to be in terrible shape. The Trumans moved to the Blair House, and the White House was gutted. The rebuilding continued from there.Mr. Klara has written a fascinating book, and I recommend it highly to any readers interested in Presidential history.

This would really be a 4.5 star review if Amazon allowed half stars. It's one of those little known facts about America's most famous residence: There have really been two White Houses; the one designed by James Hoban and built between 1792 and 1800, and the one designed by President Truman (along with White House Architect Lorenzo Winslow and the Commission on the Renovation of the Executive Mansion) that was built by John McShain between 1949 and 1952. The two structures really only share a general layout and the same four outer walls. This bit of historical trivia has always fascinated me, the construction of a modern building within a centuries-old facade, and I had been eager for a while to learn more about it.Robert Klara weaves his exhaustive research into a peppy narrative that moves along at brisk, engaging pace. He does a terrific job of exploring the scope of the problem and is quite successful at capturing the distinct voices and personalities of the various players involved in solving it. In addition to learning a lot about the White House, I learned a lot about Truman the president and Truman the man. Klara is not awestruck by his subject matter, and his book is as attuned to flaws and shortcomings as it is to triumphs. His citations are staggeringly comprehensive, and provide a great road map for the reader that wants to dig even deeper into any given aspect of the particular historic project.I only have two real complaints: 1) Sometimes, in his attempts to spice up the storytelling of what could have easily been a dry treatise, he's a bit too bold about putting himself into the heads of the participants, declaratively presenting private thoughts that can only be assumptions based on educated conclusions. He also dwells overlong at times on irrelevant bits of color, particularly Lorenzo Winslow's fascination with séances and the occult. 2) The book only includes sixteen pages of photographs in a glossy insert near the center. The photos that we do get are excellent, but the book would have benefited from even more of Abbie Rowe's incredible black and white photography, scattered throughout in context within the narrative.

I'll be forever grateful that I found this book. The White House is one of the dearest and most precious places in the country, YET, most Americans know so very little about it. Robert Klara will SHOCK you while entertaining you, as he brilliantly lets you "live" in the White House with Harry Truman while Truman has to come to grips with a little known catastrophic secret about the White House; a secret that changed the President's house forever. If you like American History (or even if you don't.... yet) this book is a must read. You will know more about the White House than almost every other American. Did you know that you can buy 225 year old, historic pieces of the White House? Either did I.

I'd seen the author interviewed on Book TV and decided to order a copy right then and there. It turned out to be one of the best gifts I'd ever given myself. I had known that Truman had spent much of his presidency in Blair House but I never understood why. Then, when Robert Klara opens the book by describing how Truman was taking a bath and almost ended up falling through the ceiling while a group of DAR ladies were sipping tea in the Blue Room below (because the physical structure of the White House was so catastrophically weak), I laughed my sides off at the image. And that was just the beginning! It's a wonderful read all the way through as he describes all the prima donna specialists involved in the reconstruction, many of whom didn't get along with each other, and makes a little known story an absolute gem to read. It almost reads like a novel, but as the old saying goes, "You can't make this stuff up!"

As a news photographer who has covered the White House for fifty-three years, I’d had the honor and good fortune to walk through the White House grounds Northwest gate, (after a tight security check), and look to my left and marvel at the magnificent building that we have for our presidents. I knew a little about the Truman restoration, certainly the assassination attempt at Blair House, but I knew very little about the nuts & bolts of the massive project that took place in Harry Truman’s only full term as president.THE HIDDEN WHITE HOUSE: HARRY TRUMAN AND THE RECONSTRUCTION OF AMERICA’S MOST FAMOUS RESIDENCE, by Robert Klara is a wonderful story about the politics and problems that President Truman faced to begin and finish a task that he thought we as Americans needed done. Lots of little details and characters make this book more than just a dull book on an aspect of American history: stories about Abbe Rowe, the crippled Interior Department line gang worker who sent First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt a photograph. The First Lady asked him to come to the White House as a photographer and he documented the entire restoration process with great care. The mystery of a hidden bomb shelter being built in the basement--bomb shelters were big about 1950. Many others, that make this book worth the reader’s time.
