Beautiful Terrible Ruins: Detroit and the Anxiety of Decline, by Dora Apel

Review

"In Beautiful Terrible Ruins: Detroit and the Anxiety of Decline, Dora Apel goes on the offensive against the myriad myths and delusions peddled about the Motor City; not only that, she rebuffs the blame and shame that have traditionally been directed at the Detroit citizenry, and redirects our attention to the corporations and bureaucrats who have abandoned it. The result is a work that seems to invigorate a depressed debate and ask timely questions about social values in America and the world it influences." (Los Angeles Review of Books)"'The borders between art, media, advertising, and popular culture have become increasingly permeable,' Apel writes, 'as visual imagery easily ranges across these formats and as people produce their own imagery on websites and social media.' And the aestheticized ruination of Detroit  feeds into a more widespread (even global) 'anxiety of decline' expressed in post-apocalyptic videogame scenarios, survivalist television programs, zombie movies, and so on ... Much of the imagery analyzed in Beautiful Terrible Ruins seems to play right along with that social vision. The nicely composed photographs of crumbling buildings are usually empty of any human presence, while horror movies fill their urban landscapes with the hungry undead - the shape of dreaded things to come." (Scott McLemee Inside Higher Ed)"Wayne State prof looks behind the fascination of Detroit's ruins: the new pornographers" by Lee DeVitoRead the full interview (http://bit.ly/1FNfkIi) (Detroit Metro Times)"Bringing her usual due diligence to bear, Apel digs deep, tracing the roots historically, culturally, and politically of the West's fascination with ruination and its import for today ... Essential reading." (Infinite Mile)"What is refreshing about Apel's approach is that her analysis reaches far beyond the spectacle of abandonment and decay to address the forces behind urban decline. In the process, she delivers a powerful critique of the role of corporate disinvestment and neoliberal globalization in ruining cities." (Journal of American Studies)"Apel again captivates with her incisive reading of cultural production." (The Journal of American History)"Dora Apel's multi-layered, thought-provoking account of the decline of Detroit and our visual perception of that decline uses Detroit as a case study to explore the anxiety brought by the repeated and continual emphasis on ruin imagery. An eloquent examination of the aesthetics of decay, the charismatic appeal of both the beautiful and the repulsive, drives the book." (ARLIS/NA Reviews)"A provocative and challenging book … Recommended. General readers, upper-division undergraduate students, graduate students, and research faculty." (CHOICE)"Writing against the genre of ruin porn, Dora Apel's wonderful Beautiful Terrible Ruins reveals the way decay is inbuilt into capitalism at its creation. An excellent and penetrating study." (Greg Grandin author of Fordlandia: The Rise and Fall of Henry Ford's Forgotten Jungle City)"In her thoughtful and riveting take on the decline of Detroit, Dora Apel makes the case that 'ruin porn' images of urban decay say less about a specific city than about the grinding forces of globalism and political abandonment." (Scott Martelle author of Detroit: A Biography)

Last week I received my usual daily email from a digital magazine that is in the forefront of creating and reporting political news. In the center of the page was an advertisement called Nine Scenes from A Changing Detroit. It is full of optimistic and promising chatter about the new Detroit that is emerging due to business and government coalitions. Whole Foods, a charter school (and the privatization that comes with that), a central market and much more all powered by a $100 million investment from JP Morgan Chase and CO. I had just read Beautiful, Terrible, Ruins so I viewed this with a different lens then I might have otherwise. While I live in a city that has gone through its own machinations with gentrification and the suffering and anguish that comes with it, Beautiful Terrible Ruins makes it clear that the winners blames the losers and that this is just the way of crony capitalism. The concept of "ruins" is new for me and I appreciated how clearly Dora Apel defined it and her critiques of it. I felt challenged by the book and wholly immersed in it. The art demonstrated her theoretical perspective and give life to it. Now when I am walking in Boston, in an area that has been almost fully gentrified I see the new construction of multi-million dollar condos as the ruins and it's pretty heartbreaking. I thank Edelweiss for giving me the opportunity to review this book for an honest opinion.

While Lucky Man seemed like an intimate portrayal of the life and beliefs of a man who just happens to be a celebrity, Always Looking Up seems to be the life happenings of a celebrity, post the makings of said- celebrity. Lucky Man is set up chronologically, though still fully gives affirmation as to why the selective dialogue Fox has with the reader truly connects us to the man inside the celebrity “bubble”. Always Looking Up, however, is thematic-- separating life events post-Lucky Man into 4 sections: “Work”, “Politics”, “Faith”, and “Family”. “Work” gives us insight in how Fox goes about creating a non-profit, with the motivation of urgency and optimism to succeed in the goal to cure PD. “Politics” gives good insight to what it is like to be a political outsider with a powerful voice and straight forward message working on a campaign. These two chapters give air to Fox’s motivation to work with his celebrity status to empower people from all over the country and the globe to help in the fight for not only PD, but—in the case of “Politics” -- other incurable diseases. His personal goal to move away from “PD Poster Boy” and into a deeper, more meaningful role in the fight against the disease is well defined and pursued in these chapters. However, “Faith” and “Family” seemed to leave much to be desired. Not in the way of stories—both are rounded off well with those—but with a conclusion of “so what?”. I feel both pillars seemed forced, riddled with stories that fit the theme, but seem shallow in connecting the reader to Fox, his beliefs and goals. These chapters seem to be there for little more than informative or entertaining purposes. Among the stories throughout the entire book are stories that confirm Fox’s “lucky” celebrity privileges, which can strongly separate him from the average reader—something the first book so magnificently avoids.Micheal J. Fox is a man that deserves the world’s attention, not merely as an actor, but as an activist, philanthropist, and optimist. He has deep morals, integrity, and an unconditional love for his family that, for anyone looking, can serve as a model and confirm that Micheal J. Fox truly does deserve our deepest respects. While I did find problems with the book, I do not reflect these as limitations to the integrity of the author.

Memoir288 pagesfootnotes/endnotes: Noillustrations: Yes (b/w photos)suitable for eReaders: YesRemember the old saw, "I used to complain because I had no shoes, and then I met a man who had no feet"? Well, I complain because I has to get up in the morning and feed the critters (before they find and dine on her toes), and then I read Always Looking Up. After reading the struggles Mike Fox has to go through to get out of bed, I will try not to complain so bitterly that the critters can't/won't get their own breakfast! For those of you who have spent the last decade or so living in a cave, or under the ocean, and don't know -- he has Parkinson's Disease (PD).This memoir is not in chronological order, it is in sections about what he values – Work, Politics, Faith, and Family, with a Prologue and an Epilogue. This bothers some people, but I had no problem with it.The Prologue is important, don't skip it;-)It covers the time since his previous book, Lucky Man, and is a very entertaining read. This isn't a 'coming of age' book, but it is a 'finding myself' book. He describes how he finds humor and happiness in the most mundane things, and how he is living a happier and more satisfied life.Michael J. Fox has long been one of my faves, and I think he has just moved to the top of that list. I love an optimist, and think there is nothing sexier than an intelligent and optimistic man. Michael J. Fox is both! This book could have easily gone into the Why Me/Poor Me category, instead it is a testament to his ability to find the humor, and the good, in life that cloaks him with the ravages of a horrid disease.Michael J. Fox is an actor, a devoted husband of more than 20 years, a loving father of four, and an activist. He lives with PD as an incurable Optimist.Buy this book. Read this book. And the next time you're feeling grumpy about lack of shoes, or having to get out of bed before you're ready, remember Mike, and Muhammad Ali, and all the other people out there living with PD.

Linda Husvar reviewed Always Looking Up on Goodreads — 5 starJust now ·Goodreads ·This sequel to Michael J. Fox's "Lucky Man" takes us deeper into to his work, politics, faith, and family life. As a PD patient, I appreciate Michael's amazing commitment to advocate for research and a cure. His courageous willingness to demonstrate what Parkinson's Disease looks like is inspiring. There are no words to adequately express the impact Michael has had on me and millions of others fighting this terrible disease. Highly recommended!Always Looking Up

This was a good story. It was such that you wanted to finish so as to find out how it would end.

to much $ for a short story

What a dramatic beginning for this book! We are placed in a courtroom where a man is being sentenced for murder. On the dock, the accused man proclaims his innocence and asks his friend in the courtroom take care of his sister. After exacting this promise, the accused then drinks from a vial and keels over dead. After a year of mourning has passed, this friend, Lord Sharpe, as well as a kindly marquess and marchioness, come to town to support this sister, Julianna, in a London season. Lord Sharpe has been troubled by the brother’s claim of innocence and is not quite willing to believe that his former friend is guilty. Will Lord Sharpe figure out the correct murderer who framed his friend? Will he fall for Julianna himself or help her to wed another man?I found the character of Lord Sharpe to be an interesting one. He is not portrayed as the typical Regency romance hero, who can definitely be a little touchy-feely to appeal to modern readers. Instead, he is portrayed as stiff and formal at first, bringing to mind Mr. Darcy (although he is more willing to dance!). He’s one of the reasons I think the book should have been longer. It would have been more appropriate for him to gradually become more comfortable in Julianna's presence, and a longer book would have been needed for his character to relax. For a novella, this book has some surprising twists and turns. In fact, that’s the second reason why I think the book should have been expanded: to give more insight into thoughts, emotions, and events of the story.I thought it odd that states that it takes place in “Nineteenth century, England” while the cover states it is a Regency; why not be specific if you are as on-point as Regency? The Regency period is a very narrow timeframe in English history and certainly not nearly as vague as the 19th century! There are some issues with grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Surprisingly, even a character's name was misspelled. Sometimes the baron is either referred to as Baron Holland or Baron Hollard. There are some issues with word choice as well, as sometimes the same or similar words were used right next to each other.Despite all that, this is a relatively well written short Regency suspense.I did receive an advance review copy, but this did not affect my review.

Francis Newton was the second son of a baron, on trial for murder. The verdict was that Francis was to be spared the gallows, but he would be incarcerated for a time and would never be able to return to society. But before everyone cleared out, Francis yelled his protest of the verdict and said that he was innocent, someone had set used him to take the blame. He turned to his former friend Thomas, Viscount Sharpe, and again said he was innocent – even though Thomas was the one who had found him standing over a body and holding a bloody knife. He asked him to find out why he was set up. He also asked him to care for his sister who would shamed by this. Although Francis had brothers, he knew they would not take care of her. Thomas gave his word and Francis pulled out a vial of poison and drank it in front of everyone, still declaring his innocence.Thomas was in shock and just stood there. A kindly older gentleman told him he should leave, commended him for agreeing to care for Francis’ sister, and told him to come see him when the mourning year was over. He was Marquess of Thurston and would make sure Julianna was not barred from social events since he had some influence over the ‘beau monde’. He also mentioned that he did not feel Mr. Newton was truly guilty; something more was going on. True to his word, as soon as Julianna arrived in London, the Marchioness of Thurston, wife of the Marquess, had been sent to meet with Julianna as her sponsor. She had arranged for several dresses for Julianna, introduced her, and made Julianna ready for her Season in London. At the ball, Thomas signed Julianna’s dance card and asked Lady Thurston if he could take Miss Newton to meet some acquaintances. As they walked, Julianna reprimanded him for not asking her first, as she did not wish to be spoken of as if she were not there. Suddenly a bearded man knocked into them hard enough that Thomas fell to the floor. Since all were unhurt, the man walked away without waiting for an introduction. So Thomas introduced Julianna to his acquaintances and she gained several more dance partners. While she danced with Lord Borden, he sat down and heard something crinkle in his pocket. It was a note stating Newton was innocent and there was more at stake than he knew! When Julianna returned to him, he showed the note to her and she immediately realized the bearded man must have slipped it in Thomas’ pocket! But why? Who was he?Henry came into the drawing room, angrily asking why Julianna had to always be in his way. He was arrogant, cruel, and hateful to her, demanding she leave “his” house and telling her he never cared for any of his family members. In the midst of the fight, Thomas arrived and intended to take her to Lady Thurston for the remainder of her stay. But she refused and said she would avoid Henry. Lord Borden asked to call on her, and that would keep her out of Henry’s way. Her only regret was that she was beginning to wish it was Thomas who was courting her.Thomas arrived the next day and told the butler he would wait until Lord Borden left. He approaching the drawing room’s slightly open door and heard laughter. But instead of being glad their relationship was proceeding well and he would likely be freed of taking care of her, he felt irritated and wanted to interrupt them! She would be gone from his life, his promise to Francis completed -- and a deep sense of disappointment overwhelmed him! Lord Borden stepped out and greeted Thomas. As they talked, Borden confided that he was going for the dowry! The lady herself held no interest for him! His courtship was merely a game to him to get the money for himself! As Thomas joined Julianna, he could not bring himself to tell her the truth about Borden’s intentions. Would she find out in time to refuse the man’s marriage offer? Would Thomas give any thought to the unusual feelings that were confusing him? And would he and Julianna discover who had given him the note and who had set up her brother as a murderer and thief? This was such a good story! The mystery was well done and kept the reader on edge. In addition, we see Thomas and Julianna beginning to warm to the other while time runs out as Lord Borden pursues his courtship. Such an exciting story line, and many directions it can take! The twists and turns have only just begun as the hunt for the true murderer heats up! Don’t miss this one – it’s awesome!

I loved this story by Joyce Alec. Kept me captivated until the end!Julianna is in a very difficult situation after her brother Francis is accused of murder. He declares himself innocent and then commits suicide. But Francis seeks Thomas help before his death asking him to help out his sister. And he does, with the help of a Marquis and a Marchioness that take Julianna under their wing. But things get very complicated and dangerous, and they both must risk their lives to uncover the truth surrounding Francis death. Will they survive and will their love survive too? This was a sweet and clean romance full of suspense and intrigue. I was totally captivated. The characters were relatable and endearing too!I totally recommend this book to lovers of the Regency romance!I received a complimentary copy of this book via Booksprout and this is my honest and unbiased review.

[T]he book is lively and engaging. The Dracula Professor has had a full and interesting life, bracketed by his colorful Romanian ancestors and by his successful children, some of whom returned to post-Communist Romania as entrepreneurs. Dracula’s Bloodline is a good read. (Journal of Folklore Research)

Awesomeness and so so needed. This is really a book for the family (mainly the siblings) of a child with autism. But it's also great for the parents and I think other kids with autism may recognize a bit of themselves in "Charlie." I would like to address some of the criticisms others wrote about the book on goodreads-as a Mom to a teenage son with autism, I really got this book. The sister Callie does not hate her brother-she has NORMAL feelings for any sibling who has to cope with having someone in their family with special needs. And being close twins, she says she feels his pain as well as his joy. It's a struggle for her-she is a teenage girl trying to find her way and fit in at the same time. Some people wanted Charlie's voice to be stronger. Welcome to autism people. We all wish they would talk and express more. The only time that seems to happen is in a meltdown and that's when you wish they would be quiet. I think he gets the point across that he is okay in his own skin, but can feel awkward and distant from others (can any teen relate to this? I think so). We see more from the others how his life gets manipulated around him to prevent meltdowns and stress. Because that is how it actually is. Some people argued that it should have not been fictionalized. That could go either way. But because I think they were trying to relate to many people, they included compilations (i.e. maybe the special ed teacher incident?) and they were being upfront and honest by saying these aren't our experiences, but others have had them. I'm sure they had plenty of examples from their own lives to draw from-but these are teenagers. Perhaps they would like a little privacy and keep some of their pain to themselves. I think this was a breakthrough book because you hear the point of view of a sibling and also that the child with autism is a teenager. We are so used to reading about young kids-when they are diagnosed, etc. that we forget they grow up. They have normal teenage angst and then autism on top of that. As a parent, I found it incredibly relatable. We have gone through so many similar things, that it was astounding. I walked away after reading this with new perspectives on autism as well as feeling like the teens in the book did. That although everyone has their problems/issues, especially in their teenage years, when you can create a strong family bond and have each others backs, you will get through it all with a smile.

I am the proud mom of 2 boys (ages 11 and 14) who have Autism and let me tell you it's an amazing journey but not an easy one. It's the biggest challenge my family has had to face but it's worth it because I wouldn't change my boys for anything. Reading this book really made me feel better about their future and a stronger feeling of hope for what is ahead for their future. The Peete's are an incredible family and they are "Team RJ" all the way. The Peete's journey had to be shared and I am glad they finally wrote this book. It's a must read even if your life hasn't been touched by Autism. In that department, I am doubly blessed.

While reading this book as an educator who has run social skills groups for high school students with autism, I found a lot of the questions and responses provided by the twins--one with and one without autism--to be helpful stepping off points for student consideration and discussion. I also think the book would be a helpful family resource for those who are dealing with autism at home, no matter what the age level of the children involved, as it provides different points of view--one from outside the autism cloak and one from inside it. I especially appreciated the input of the twin who does not have autism (Callie/Ryan), as it is important to remember that a serious disability affects all members of a family in unique ways and some people are better able to cope than are others.

If you have a child with autism, I recommend you read this book out loud with them. It gave me great insight into my son and my son great insight into himself.

Reading about the experiences of teenage autism in this book continued to educate me on the daily struggles for the person with autism, and those who love them. It was especially gratifying for me to read aloud excerpts later to my 5th grade students. There were a lot of good discussions that arose from the situations in the story. It taught all of us to be more empathetic.

Great insight on the challenges of raising a child on the spectrum. Especially from a sibling's view. Great information on resources at the end of the book also. A must read for everyone.

This book is amazing! My autistic grandson read this and got a lot out of it. Thanks so much for taking the time to share what a teen feels like and goes through being autistic.

Asa mom of a teen with autism, I was very excited to read a book that comes from the point of view of an actual teenager. I notice sometimes that I push too much (like most mothers of teenagers). I realized that I have to allow him to be independent at times and not constantly hover

Secret Historian: The Life and Times of Samuel Steward, Professor, Tattoo Artist, and Sexual Renegade, by Justin Spring

From Publishers Weekly

Life in the closet proves boisterous indeed in this biography of an iconic figure of the pre-Stonewall gay demimonde. Steward (1909–1993) was an English professor, a novelist who wrote both well-received literary fiction and gay porn, a confidant of Gertrude Stein and Thornton Wilder, a furtive but exuberant erotic adventurer whose taste for sailors, rough trade, and violent sadomasochism endeared him to sex researcher Alfred Kinsey; later in life, he became Phil Sparrow, official tattoo artist of the Oakland, Calif., Hell's Angels. Spring (Paul Cadmus) fleshes out this colorful story by quoting copiously from his subject's highly literate journals and sex diaries—his Stud File contained entries on trysts with everyone from Rudolph Valentino to Rock Hudson—which afford an unabashed account of Steward's erotic picaresque and the yearnings that drove it. (His swerve from academia into tattooing, with its mix of physical pain and proximity to nubile male flesh, was essentially a fetish turned into a business.) Spring's sympathetic and entertaining story of a life registers the limitations imposed on homosexuals by a repressive society, but also celebrates the creativity and daring with which Steward tested them. Review

“Somewhere in the United States, there may be an attic containing the written remnants of a previously unchronicled 20th-century life that was even more astonishing than the one the writer Justin Spring discovered in San Francisco a few years ago. But even the most skeptical reader of his new book, Secret Historian, will have to admit that the bar is now set high. Samuel Steward, the subject of this absorbing act of biographical excavation, had many identities, including several that the subtitle of the book omits . . . Be assured that it's all for real, and that Spring, even when neck-deep in sensational material, is not a sensationalist. As a biographer, he's humble but firm--he lets Steward's vivid, energetic prose do much of the talking but keeps his own hand on the tiller and never gets giddy, even when Steward seems to be carousing his way through the entire Modern Library . . . The probity and expansive vision of Spring's work is a reminder that a great, outspread terrain of gay history remains to be mapped . . . One suspects there are many more stories of that time worth telling, and too few treasure-packed attics.” ―Mark Harris, The New York Times Book Review“Can a secret sex diary furnish an artistic legacy as meaningful as Emily Dickinson's sewn-up bundles of poems, or the piles of paintings Theo van Gogh inherited after his brother's premature demise? Samuel Steward may never have imagined it, but his erotic history raises the question. A talented writer who early attracted the attention of Gertrude Stein and Thornton Wilder, he found his career blocked by a determination (so different from hers and his) to write candidly about his homosexuality . . . Steward was an obsessive record keeper, and his journals and his ‘Stud File' of thousands of encounters allow [Justin Spring] to create a remarkably full portrait of a man whose life was what Edmund White's might have been had White been born three decades earlier . . . [This] extensive documentation--and the miraculous rescue of that documentation, recounted in the book's preface--left his biographer material to reconstruct an emblematic homosexual life.” ―Benjamin Moser, Harper's“Justin Spring's jaw-dropping Secret Historian reads like a novel probing a lifelong rebel's courage, creativity and ultimate sadness . . . Spring has reconstituted Steward, as Phil Andros might say, in flesh and blood and all sorts of bodily fluids.” ―David D'Arcy, San Francisco Chronicle“This is a rich and exuberant biography of a man who deserves to be better known” ―The Economist“A fascinating biography . . . [Steward] tackled life with awe-inspiring abandon” ―Details“Life in the closet proves boisterous indeed in this biography of an iconic figure of the pre-Stonewall gay demimonde . . . Spring's sympathetic and entertaining story of a life registers the limitations imposed on homosexuals by a repressive society, but also celebrates the creativity and daring with which Steward tested them.” ―Publishers Weekly“[A] provocative biography . . . Generous excerpts from Steward's journals and unpublished memoirs fortify an already comprehensive examination of a life lived with unabashed independence and homoerotic expression during the sexual rebellion of the pre-Stonewall era . . . A vivid, candid portrait.” ―Kirkus Reviews“Justin Spring documents the extraordinary life of one of Kinsey's crucial gay witnesses, and reading Secret Historian is like reading Kinsey dramatized. A cultivated, rather shy professor of English literature, Sam Steward dropped out in midlife to become an eminent tattooist and writer of S&M porn. As the story of a sex-obsessed recovering alcoholic later addicted to barbiturates and to masochistic thrills, this could easily have become a portrait of a failure. Instead, through Steward's copious records, we have a brave, fly-on-the-wall account of American homosexual subculture and persecution.” ―Martin Stannard, author of Evelyn Waugh and Muriel Spark: The Biography“A true page-turner--and a memorable act of historical reclamation. Sammy Steward is all but unknown except by a handful of historians, but Justin Spring's lively biography--which is full of important new information about pre-Stonewall gay life--should put Sammy on the map, which is where he decidedly belongs.” ―Martin Duberman, author of Cures: A Gay Man's Odyssey“Secret Historian is a startlingly, unforgettably vivid glimpse into a life--and a world--that few of us can imagine.” ―Terry Teachout, author of Pops: A Life of Louis Armstrong“Samuel Steward, secret sexual historian, is a secret no longer. From an evangelical Ohio boardinghouse to the gardens of the Villa Borghese, from the lobby of the City Opera to the South Side YMCA, Steward led--and recorded--an improbably revealing, representative life. Bedding Oscar Wilde's Bosie, taking tea with Stein and Toklas, and confessing to (and performing for!) Dr. Kinsey, he seemed determined to leave no corner of twentieth-century American queer culture unexplored and undocumented. Justin Spring has rescued his story from a San Francisco attic and set it before twenty-first-century readers with unflagging patience, authority, and humanity--Secret Historian is a major achievement.” ―Langdon Hammer, author of Hart Crane and Allen Tate“Justin Spring has painstakingly and compassionately unearthed the labyrinthine world of a brilliant, multifaceted, and troubled creator. A classically educated and highly talented renegade intellectual, Steward's trajectory was impacted at every turn by his sexual compulsions. This bittersweet story, with its hair-raising and obsessively recorded details, is astonishing. Steward's humor, empathy, and refusal to bow to the repressive status quo are a moving testimonial to honesty, courage, and integrity. His story should resonate with anyone engaged in the ongoing struggle for personal freedom of identity.” ―Ed Hardy“This is a rare and important book. Secret Historian is a genuinely captivating combination of clear writing, a clean conscience, and more dirty stories than I ever imagined one life could hold.” ―Debby Applegate, author of The Most Famous Man in America: The Biography of Henry Ward Beecher

"Secret Historian: The Life and Times of Samuel Steward, Professor, Tattoo Artist, and Sexual Renegade" by Justin Spring, 2011I quite liked this book. Samuel Steward, aka Phil Andros and Phil Sparrow, led a remarkable life, as the subtitle described, as a university professor, novelist, tattoo artist, photographer and pornographer. The "secret historian" angle comes in as he was a fanatical chronicler of his own sex life, and an aggressive sex life it was. He kept a "Stud File" with all the data. The record keeping attracted the attention of Alfred Kinsey, who much valued Steward's records and observations (and photographs). He also counted among his friends a who's who of the literary world, and was great friends with Gertrude Stein and Alice B Toklas. He later turned his correspondence with them into a book. His escapades included Thornton Wilder, Lord Alfred Douglas, Thomas Mann, André Gide, and Rock Hudson and his friendships brought in Paul Cadmus, George Platt Lynes, and in later years Chuck Renslow and Dom Orejudos (Etienne). By the end of his life his "Stud File" totaled 807 people and over 5000, er, events. The book is not a quick read, as it's very detailed. Spring is quite meticulous in detailing Steward's life, and while it describes a whole lot of sex, it doesn't get exploitative with the details...it's not a sexy book. Steward's life (he died in1993 at age 84) covers much of the last century and certainly those pre-Stonewall times are especially of interest.

There are many brilliant portions of this book (childhood, early Paris, tattooing) that really paint a picture of Steward and the world in which he lived. These parts are sometimes shocking and/or funny, and may not be for everybody, but I certainly enjoyed the living heck out of them. These parts are heavily weighed down by the other sections where the author's writing is almost as painfully dry as a college textbook. Most noticeable example for me was the recounting of 30+ stud file entries and Steward's sex life in general during in spintriae period, where you might see three different encounters described one after another.Still, overall I DO recommend reading it from beginning to end. The author has obviously put in a great deal of research and effort into the book, and you can always skip ahead a little if you start to feel like you're studying for a midterm.

Samuel Steward could have very well remained little more than a popular and closeted university professor for his entire life. But instead, he left "the ivied nursery", as he refers to academia, and jumped into real life with both feet. The title "Secret Historian" is unfortunate, as it implies a passive observer, watching and chronicling history safely from the sidelines. But Steward was no lurker (except perhaps when he was cruising the back alleys of Chicago, seeking sex with like-minded men). Instead, he was an active participant in many aspects of society and history, and created any number of snippets of history himself along the way.Because of his interactions with so many levels of society for so long (from Gertrude Stein to the Hells Angels), and his extensive notes, writings, letters, and detailed documentation of his sexual contacts with other men (which remarkably averaged about 4 per week from the 1920's through the 1970's), he's left behind a vast archive of data regarding gay life in the days before Stonewall. Those 80 boxes of Stewards writings and artifacts would probably still be moldering in the attic where they were found, or worse, tossed out, if not for the clearly heroic efforts of the author of this biography, who tracked them down, saved them, and then managed to make sense of it all.Steward is quoted extensively in the book, and he comes across as warm, extremely intelligent, very funny, down-to-earth, moral, and a keen observer of human nature, not to mention an excellent writer. He is a very sympathetic character, and by the end of the book, I had grown to like him a great deal.I found the first 1/3 of the book very interesting. Steward's active gay sex life as a teen and young man in a small town in Ohio in the days just after World War I are something that I would not have thought possible. The middle 1/3 of the book, during which Steward is a professor and writer, was not particularly exciting. The last 1/3 is the best, as Steward seems to break free of conventional society, as well as an addiction to alcohol, becoming a noted tattoo artist, and later, a writer of a series of critically acclaimed leather-oriented erotic stories, among many other things. (In fact, I now know that the Phil Andros stories that had so titillated me in my youth were actually written by Steward.)Steward gets five stars for a fascinating life, well-lived. The author gets five stars for unbelievable effort and thoroughness. But the book only gets 4 stars, because it can bog down at times with a lot of detail, as it strikes a balance between being an unparalleled academic work, and entertaining reading.
