The first thing I noticed is that the word "lord" for God is not capitalized, yet, the "Hallowed Spirit" is. Subtle things such as this have a profound, yet subliminal effect. This is characteristic of Christian books where titles such as "Son of Man" are capitalized, but pronouns referring to God Himself, such as "he, him" etc, are not. Culturally, it is just a different style of writing, but you will notice. Also, the restriction on using "Allah," instead of God, seems to remove in some ways the Muslim character of these writings, I'm not sure this was the author's choice. However, I have not finished reading the book to offer further critiques...

Finally a great translation of this book. The wise saying had become part of parcel of traditional muslim culture and etiquette. The translation is not to literal and is a great companion to the translation of saying so Ali. The introduction is also useful. Highly recommended.

Excellent compendium to introduce the gamut of Islamic thought. Noble, kind, generous, universal values are translated from the originals by an outstanding Islamic scholar, Professor, Doctor Tahera Qutbuddin.

Superb translation of Qadi al-Qudai's compendium of aphorisms and maxims attributed to the Prophet Muhammad. This book offers sage advice and general knowledge suitable for all, Sunni, Shi'a and non-Muslim. Highly recommended along with Dr Qutbuddin's translation of "A Treasury of Virtues: Sayings, Sermons, and Teachings of Ali" by the same author.

The book is a little outdated (which I knew when ordering) as it was written before the mortgage meltdown circa 2008, however as a mortgage banker and loan officer this book was indispensable when I first started in terms of putting the whole process in context.

As a real estate agent, I love it.My biggest gripe is that a lot of laws have changed. This book was written before 2008, so it still has pre-Dowd Frank legislation.Other than that, the advice is wonderful. I just wish the author would publish an updated version.

Know a young couple who is looking for that first home? How about an apartment dweller who is ready to try home ownership and leave the renter's life behind? This is the perfect gift. It is particularly useful for those who are a little afraid to dip into the real estate waters, which can be fraught with a lot of anxiety under the best of circumstances. This book will help to soothe many of the first-time home buyer's fears by arming them with knowledge. I purchased the 3rd edition for my niece and borrowed a copy from the library for myself. It is excellent. If you are preparing someone for the world of home ownership or if you are preparing yourself, as I am, this book is an excellent place to start. The language is easy to understand. Terminology that is not familiar to the layperson is explained clearly. Also, there is an extensive appendix with lots of samples and forms that you can utilize in your search.

When I was starting the process of buying my first house, I bought this book (actually, the first edition from 1994), along with two others. One of the others was "Kiplinger's Buying and Selling a Home" and was decent enough. The other one was so bad that I threw it out and now forget what the title was. Sorry.This one, however, was perfect for my needs. I didn't know much of anything about real estate transactions, but I'm a sharp guy and I just needed someone to walk me through the whole process. Ms. Glink does just that it in an easy-to-read Q&A style, and I read it cover to cover.By the end of the book, I wasn't an expert but I knew enough that I could speak intelligently with my buyer's agent about my needs and was able to make good decisions regarding financing et cetera.My sister is buying her first house now, and I'm recommending this book to her. You should get it too.

Although I ended up reading this from front to back, the structure of the book makes it really easy to just choose questions you need answered. I thought this was quite comprehensive and had some really good tips I hadn't seen elsewhere. I'm not sure if the most recent edition came out since the most recent Home Buying for Dummies, but it felt more recent. I also liked that she was way more open to more modern mortgage structures and not just obsessed with fixed rate mortgages.

This book offers practical advices and it's easy to read for first time buyers. I was able to get some great tips and ask good questions to my real state broker.

I found this more helpful than any other book on this subject. We were looking for a home lower than the 50,000$ range and knew we'd be in for it. It turned out much better than expected and this book eased a lot of my concerns.

I have read 5 books on home buying in preparation of purchase of a new home and this book has been the best of them (I also recommend "How to save Thousands of Dollars on your Home Mortgage"). The book deals with mortgage, realtors, home inspection, price negotiation, and closing. Unless you are a real estate professional, you will learn plenty from this book. It also helps the author is a very fluid writer and her explainations are precise and easy to understand.My only gripe is despite its 500 pages, the book is too short! The last 150 pages are spent on appendix and the book has a large print. Yes, the book is concise but at the expense of being more comprehensive. But I am being picky here, you will not regret picking this book over others in the market.

About the Author

Vassili Zaitsev was born in 1915, and spent his early life as a hunter in the Urals. He joined the Russian navy in 1937, and volunteered for Stalingrad after hearing about the appalling losses. Zaitsev’s mastery as a sniper became legendary, and he was awarded several times for his skill, including the coveted gold star of the Hero of the Soviet Union. He died in 1991.

Zaitsev (or his ghost writer) has a very engaging and easy to follow writing style. He reveals himself to be a pleasant, social and popular guy with a sense of humor. He's not the brooding loner you might think a sniper would be. I really enjoyed his discussions of tactics, especially of sniper groups working as a unit. The famous duel with Maj Koenig, featured in the book "War of the Rats" and the movie "Enemy at the Gates", is well covered, but it's only one of many. Taking out enemy snipers was one of his, and his group's, main tasks, along with taking out machine gun nests and artillery spotters.For a book written in 1956, there is surprisingly little rah rah communistic prose, through there is quite a bit of patriotic Mother Russia verbiage. That seemed totally appropriate to me, though.I was surprised he didn't write one bit about equipment. He never even mentions who manufactured his rifle, for example. In the pre Google days this would have been a major frustration, but now, of course, you can just type in "Zaitsev's rifle" etc. and learn all you want. He also doesn't reveal anything at all about breathing and other technical aspects of actually taking a shot. Also on the negative side, the book is way too short and some the flashbacks in the first one third of the book confused me as what happened when. Therefore, I'm not quite going for five stars. Four though, and a must read for fans of the what was probably the most important battle of the 20th Century.

Notes of a Russian Sniper by Vassili Zaitsev is a very fair book. I wanted to give it five stars but could in good conscience give it only three because the book has some annoying issues.First, the first sixty pages are really disjoined. The reader isn't given a linear time line like he was born here, grew up doing this, went to school, was skilled at that, joined the Soviet Navy, and then volunteered to fight at Stalingrad. Instead the first sixty pages are jumbled and the typical reader will lose track of why the first few chapters have titles. It's not until page fifty-seven where Vassili becomes a sniper that the book goes over to a regular linear style and it becomes a wildly good read. Indeed, if the book had been a hundred pages longer it would have shot up to four to five stars.Now, this book was used as a rough guide for Enemy at the Gates [Blu-ray]. The story of using a piece of glass (mirror) to blind a German sniper was true but, of course, the circumstances are completely different. There was a German sniper ace sent to destroy Vassili but the issue was never really in doubt and they shot him in less than a day. The method of the German's destruction was very matter-of-fact and the movie seemed to use a technique that worked in real life but didn't work when shown in the movie. Vassili did try to romance a nurse when he would show up at the local battlefield aid station for treatment of various injuries: what would incapacitate an American soldier was merely stitched up for the typical Soviet and sent back to the front. Anyway, that nurse treated Vassili as more of an annoyance so the romance goes no where.Now, the part that is important for modern soldiers or amateur snipers starts on page 162. This tells of the importance of the Sniper's notebook and data sheets. Vassili stresses that a good sniper must take very good notes of the battlefield. Now, in his hunts for the German snipers he will go as far as counting the piles of expended artillery shell cases and noting that in his data book. One German sniper is found because the count of shell cases does not match the previous day. All objects of note have their ranges written down. Next, Vassili reprimands some of his snipers that they have not properly zeroed their weapons and miss targets of opportunity. This chapter is timeless in its advice. Modern soldiers can learn a lot from Vassili at this point.Now, a lot of older readers, because of the Cold War and Vietnam, have a bias against the Communists. Some of those biases are confirmed. Vassili was assigned to a penal detail to fight at the front until wounded. Note this was done while his paperwork was sent in for becoming a Hero of the Soviet Union, an award equal to the US Congressional Metal of Honor. Such was the power and uncaring nature of the old Soviet Union. Next, Vassili comments on a constantly drunk Lieutenant Fedasov. Soviet Units had a notorious reputation for drunkenness. It would not be uncommon for a Soviet Union to expend great cost and take a position from the Nazi's only to have the whole unit get drunk and be destroyed in a German counterattack. Vassili honestly does not mind that a superior officer is in a constant state of inebriation.There are lots of foot notes one almost every other page. These are used to explain some sort of Russian slang or expression. Some are good but the vast majority of the sayings doesn't translate well or are translated badly with the book's writer then giving an English approximation of the saying. Why that saying was not used in the first place is an example of bad editing. Since the book was taken from Vassili's remembrances, were written down by his writer, and then were later translated means that some things will get lost in the translation.In closing this book is extremely good. It's just that it's disjointed nature and some poor translations cost it two stars. Indeed, I've read some books by former WWII German soldiers and they are fantastically good. It helps they knew some English and their translators were far more intimate with German than more difficult Russian language

It's interesting to peek into the mind of a loyal communist and skilled marksman fighting for his homeland during WWII. Zaitsev wrote well, just as many Russian authors before him, although his language is not as flowery and boisterous as earlier soviet writers were. This book is less of a tactical handbook and more of a biography, touching briefly on his early life and moving on fairly quickly to his experiences at the Battle of Stalingrad. From reading Notes of a Russian Sniper one gets a clear idea of what it must have been like for a young sailor volunteering to the front lines and fighting his way into the history books. He gives great descriptions of the people around him and rarely attempts to hog the spotlight, even in his own book. Especially great read for anyone who has seen Enemy at the Gates and wishes to understand more of this great man. In the film a lot was changed, and many characters seem to be amalgams of those described in Vasili's book, but one can easily understand from Zaitsev's writing how the events took place.

This book is not impartial at all. This is a pro- Soviet Union story of Zaitsev's exploits in the Great Patriotic War. He actually makes the claim that only the Germans used exploding bullets which is not true. It seems most books marketed to the prospective and current business school student population are high on price and low on value. I expected this book to be the same, but I was blown away. First off this book is 650 nearly full pages of answers to the questions you have or maybe haven't even thought of yet. The material is current and very relevant. My only concern is that there are so many date specific references in this book that it could become obsolete in just a couple years.The authors clearly have been in our shoes very recently and the many footnotes answer the exact sub question the text raises in my head. For example in the section on grades and non disclosure policies there is a footnote that most employers do not care about grades and those who do find out either way so consult second year students on how to best manage this issue. Even the humorous references are right on point with the 26-30 year old target audience. I can't say enough about how useful and even enjoyable this book is. Even if I don't end up doing things differently I feel well informed about each of the decisions I will make.

Easy to read and with some great tips for MBA students both inside and outside the classroom. Slightly more useful for full-time as opposed to part-time students as the sections on housing and quitting your current job wouldn't normally apply to PT students. The overview of major topics (e.g. financial accounting) encountered in any MBA program is particularly helpful as is the career building section with tips on networking and interviewing.

The author's quick refreshers of the background class material was somewhat helpful. Overall, this book did not have very much depth and was more focused on the fun potential and status of an MBA. It is not a title for the serious applicant.

I recommend this as a short, humorous crash course into MBA school environment and course basics. It is a launching point to much studying.

Once I discovered this book, I give it to every college graduate I know. And their response is amazingly positive - for example - "I think this book gave me the correct info to get into grad school" " This book has been a lifesaver!" These replies give me a reason to give a gift that is appreciated as well as functional. It's pretty much my standard for gift giving to students. Great info anyway! and interesting reading.

You can call this book a B-school 101. That's good if you are absolutely clueless about American B-schools experience. It is not so good if you are already familiar with B-school experience or are in your 2nd year.About 60% of the book deals with nitty gritty details of the B-school experience such as how to find a roommate, how to deal with recruiting, what you should expect from your professors and classmates, etc. In my opinion, much of the advice is common sense, such as don't drink too much alcohol at recruiting events (although I have seen plenty of B-school students ignore some common sense advice).About 35-40% of the book provides an overview of much of first year B-school curriculum. Unfortunately, the overview doesn't have enough depth to be any useful but takes up substantial portion of the book. From my experience, it's best to take statistics (and Calc too) prior to B-school. But you may find professors teach similar concepts slightly differently and may focus on certain areas of a topic more than others. In other words, don't bother preparing for B-school curriculum.I would recommend this book particularly to international students who are headed to American B-schools and to those who are generally clueless about B-school experience.Otherwise, you won't get much out of it.

The book didn't have any answer keys. Tried accessing the tutorial but didn't work as well.

The teacher's edition is very helpful when I am assisting my children with their math, but the print is so incredibly small in most parts that I had to purchase a pair of reading glasses even though I have 20/20 vision. Using some extra pages to enlarge the problems would have been beneficial.

This book was written by two professors at Cambridge University, who are also founders of the CEDAR Company, which is on the leading edge of audio restoration technology. The book consisely summarizes several of the audio restoration ideas developed by the authors that have been published in various journals. The book focuses on Bayesian analysis as a means for determining the most probable nature of audio defects (clicks, pitch variations and so forth) based on observed, corrupted data. Bayesian inference is also used to find maximum a posteriori characteristics of the underlying, uncorrupted signal.Those interested in restoring old phonograph and cylinder recordings will find the book very interesting, should one want to understand and develop audio restoration software.The book is very well-written and typeset, unlike many contemporary technical books. It uses vector and matrix notation for most formulae, which is welcome to those familiar with matlab. There is a very good list of references.Many of the priniciples discussed require a good knowledge of statistical signal processing by the reader. (Fortunately a new book "Computational Statistics Handbook with Matlab" was just published and should fill some gaps.)The book comes with an audio CDROM that illustrates several of the techniques discussed in the book. The CD itself is effectively an advertisement for their CEDAR sound processing systems, as the CD has clips with varying levels of processing applied, including the full CEDAR proprietary system. The CD contains the original source material as wav files, so researchers can use them to benchmark their algorithms against the commercial CEDAR system.I find it disappointing that the authors did not include matlab code to better illustrate their concepts. But then, the authors caution that some of the algorithmic details embodied in their restoration software are not published "for reasons of commercial secrecy."[As an interesting side-note, one other founder of CEDAR, S. Vaseghi, has published a book on noise reduction and audio restoration. The publisher's advertisement said it came with matlab code. This is not the case. I contacted the publisher and was told (three months later) that the matlab reference was an oversight. Why the secrecy?]In summary, Digital Audio Restoration is an excellent book by two of the world's leading researchers in this area. I would have given it a five-star rating if it had matlab (or C) reference code. An intrepid researcher could sift through IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing and ICASSP proceedings and glean much of what's in this book; thus matlab examples would have been a welcome addition. Still, there's no better book to my knowledge in the area of audio restoration.

You should “make sure the bottom of the onion touches the water. Mark your jar on the outside so you’ll know the water level. Next you’ll seal your jar with the plastic wrap to “keep water from evaporating.”Once the roots start to grow you can check and mark your water level each time. Start observing the results and think about what happened. How much water do you think those roots took up? The results should give you a pretty good idea. There are many experiments that will tell you about the roots of plants. For example, in this book you can learn whether or not roots always grow down or not, how much of a plant is roots, and whether or not a piece of carrot root can grow new leaves.
