In full disclosure, I took his Financial Time Series class last quarter and thoroughly enjoyed it. As such, I am quite familiar with his teaching style. I bought this book to teach myself VAR models for a project at work.While the explanations are clear, and the derivations are well done, the real value of the book comes from examples showing the implementation of his fabulous MTS package. Using this package, one does not need to have a strong grasp of the underlying math, but rather only a surface understanding of what is going on. Thus, given his abundant sample code makes this book the ideal text for applied technicians who aren't required to memorize esoteric proofs.

The theory of VARs is explained in detail. Also, R commands are satisfactory enough.The geometry of the models also described in very satisfactory way.The level is, as far as I see, for graduate studs. The undergraduates may find it very difficult.I think, the book is the the book that must be handled after a primary source like "Principles of Econometrics (4th ed; Griffith)"

This text is a good reference for a broad range of topics in the analysis of multivariate time series. It covers not only proven mainstream methods (VARMA, cointegration, PCA) but also delves into some cutting-edge techniques such as those used in volatility modelling. The coverage across topics it not uniform, and the author freely admits the depth of coverage has been influenced by his own preferences and understanding of the various topics. Therefore it should come as no surprise that the text is heavily focused on VARMA modelling.The order by which topics are presented is reasonable. I like that the author starts right off with the more general vector/matrix approach and does not waste time introducing the "special case" posed by univariate time series, since this book is going to be very difficult for a student who has not already been exposed to the univariate case. Indeed, a level of familiarity with advanced mathematical topics (such as infinite-order matrix polynomials) is presumed. I also liked that proofs occur mostly at the end of chapters, and that the author maintains a web page with a listing of errata.While this is an excellent reference for a variety of techniques, like many of these kinds of books, it does not offer much on the subject of model selection -- that is, the process of choosing between competing techniques, nor much advice on how to determine whether a particular technique might be appropriate or inappropriate in a given setting.Some reviewers have complained about being turned off by the heavy use of mathematical notation, some of which may seem foreign to some readers. However, I think this is unavoidable when covering advanced topics such as these. To his credit, the author mostly uses a consistent set of notation throughout the book, and is mostly willing to dispense with mathematical purity whenever it would hinder readability. For example, I was thankful that he uses the same symbol for a random variable and its realization, as using separate symbols would have been unnecessarily complicated in this setting.

Professor Ruey Tsay is the author of multiple editions of book on time series analysis, most recently An Introduction to Analysis of Financial Data with R. Most people who work with financial data or who have taken a graduate course in time series analysis have a copy of one of Prof. Tsay's books. The previous books focus largely on univariate time series. Prof. Tsay's new book, Multivariate Time Series Analysis focuses on multiple time series that have some kind of cross sectional relationship. Time series with multivariate or co-integrated distributes occur in finance, which accounts for the sub-title.One of the things that I appreciated about the book is that the proofs are kept to appendix sections at the end of the chapters. I found the level of math approachable. Most of the mathematics is discrete math (summations), without any advanced calculus. Because the book deals with multivariate time series, linear algebra is used through out the book, but again, the level is reasonable. An advanced undergraduate or anyone who has taken applied math graduate courses should have not problem with the math.Except for some of the notation... Few people read books like this from front to back. Generally there's something that you would like to understand and you read the associated chapters. Jumping into a chapter, I found some of the notation difficult to understand. For example, Prof. Tsay uses B to indicate the back-shift operator (e.g., B(x[t]) = x[t-1]) (see page 19). I have not seen this notation so jumping into a chapter I kept wondering what this B was that I kept seeing in many equations. Some math texts have a page or two that summarizes the local notation. That would have been nice here.The book covers a variety of topics and in many cases I found the explanation briefer than I would have wished. My favorite time series book is the now dated Modeling Financial Time Series with S-PLUS, Springer (2006) (Prof. Zivot was one of my professors in graduate school). A search will turn this book up in PDF form, so you don't have to buy it. Prof. Zivot's approach works better for me. He introduces a topic and then develops examples, with more discussion. Multivariate Time Series Analysis does provide R examples, but it was difficult for me to understand the jump from theory to example in many cases without pouring over the text several times. One example of this is the coverage of Principle Component Analysis (PCA) for factor models. PCA is introduced and applied to factor models in a few chapters. For me PCA analysis is something that would have been better covered with its own chapter.Once I got used to Prof. Tsay's notation I found the book easier to understand. Multivariate Time Series Analysis is an important reference and it will join my earlier copy of Prof. Tsay's Analysis of Financial Time Series on my reference shelf.

The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom is one of my all-time favorite books. I was excited when I found this book as a way to introduce my children to her. I thought the authors did a great job in helping young children understand what an amazing woman she is!Corrie and her family lived in Holland. They helped the Jews escape the Nazis and were eventually caught. She and her sister were sent to live in a concentration camp. It was a difficult time and there were tears in our eyes as we read certain parts. One of the things that surprised me the most when I first read her story was her age--she was actually in her 50's when she was caught. Her story is filled with miracles, faith and forgiveness, and is one that will inspire people of all ages!

I purchased this book for my son after he finished the book about Brother Andrew in the same series (Christian Heroes: Then & Now). All the books in this series give kids a wonderful introduction and overview of the lives of those who have dedicated their lives to serving God.I had read The Hiding Place this year, and after discussing it with my family, my son told me he wanted to read it. I was a bit hesitant, since there were some parts of the book which might be a little traumatic or descriptive for a young reader. So I was thrilled to find Corrie ten Boom: Keeper of the Angels' Den.This book was perfect. It told the story of Corrie ten Boom in an age-appropriate, but still accurate manner. My son was amazed at all Corrie and her family did to help others, and all they were willing to give up in order to do what they felt God wanted them to do.I highly recommend this book, and others in the Christian Heroes series.

We've now read several of the books in this series, and have loved every one of them so far. This book is no different. We used this book as a read-aloud for my 2nd-grader, and both of us got so wrapped up in the story, that we set aside the rest of our schoolwork for several days so we could finish the story!This story, in particular, touches my heart. Ever since I was a child, I would think about the victims of the Holocaust any time I had a particularly bad day, just to remember how blessed I am to live in this day and age. These stories are helping my children, now, to realize how blessed we are--that our discomforts and disappointments are nothing compared to what so many other people have and are experiencing. The lesson in this story, "There is no pit so deep that God's love is not deeper," still rings true today. I hope this book made a firm impression on my daughter, so that when she faces tough times, she will trust in the faithfulness of God and His love for her.

This book will inspire you and teach young and old that God can do extraordinary and marvelous things even in bleak and terrifying surroundings.Corrie Ten Boom was an ordinary watchmaker's daughter when her family was arrested for helping Jewish people escape the Nazi's. They were taken to prison and suffered greatly under the hands of their captors. Yet Corrie and her sister always looked towards God and where thankful for all of the blessings he gave them, such as a patch of blue sky, a hidden Bible, the women they read the Bible too. This book tells the story of Corrie and how she survived the war and went on to help others by telling them about God's love and forgiveness. Corrie learned a lot from her prison experience, but most of all, Corrie learned that by leaning on God, she can share God's love and forgiveness to all, even to her enemies and those who hurt her.

This magnificently written Christian biography book is perfect for a book report, particularly for a student who attends Christian private school or who is homeschooled (as my 13 year old son). Corrie ten Boom truly went through hell on earth just to satisfy God in Heaven; when it is my time to go, she is one of the many individuals I would love to meet when I get there! Should you read this book, prepare your heart (and perhaps a hankie). My opinion, not enough stars to rate it! :-)

I used this book in an introductory grad-level bioinformatics course. No programming knowledge was necessary to enroll and we learned python as part of this course. This book was required, but I only used it for the first week or two of class. Really not that helpful for my needs.My main issue with the book is the general lack of editorial feel. Most chapters are topical case studies which also describe how to do a task in perl (there is a companion website which provides equivalent python scripts). Especially since we were learning Python in this course and considering that the field is moving towards object-oriented languages, I rarely needed to reference this book.There are several better introductions to genomics, so if you aren't interested in the 'how-to' of this field then I recommend passing on this book. Even if you are interested, consider other resources before this one.

Use this a a desk reference to leverage new genomics tools. Relatively well written summary - starting point. Strongly recommended

This is a useful and informative text; although I won't be using it "extensively" until next semester, I have scanned the chapters and it appears to have the right content for studying the subject thoroughly. I look forward to supplementing class lectures with the info contained in this text.

THE INSIDERS' GUIDE TO ST. LOUIS is a great book for anyone interested in domestic travel. This book tells you where to find the most enjoyable attractions on both the Missouri and Illinois sides of the St. Louis metroplex, and also tells you where to get the best- and healthiest- food to eat. There is also a long discussion of different neighborhoods, as well as a section on both childhood and post-secondary education. The radio station list is also comprehensive. True, there is nothing about the area's shopping malls, but that's a minor quibble, as this is a great book that almost anyone can enjoy.

We used this book on a recent trip to St. Louis, and it was extremely helpful. I particularly liked how it devoted an entire chapter to traveling with children in St. Louis - so we were able to choose family friendly restaurants throughout our stay. I also noticed that some listings were repeated in different places throughout the book, so it was less likely that you would miss something if you looked in the "wrong" place. (eg. family friendly restaurants were also listed in the general restaurants chapter)I would recommend this guide to anyone planning a short or extended stay in the area.

There is NO shortage of emotions in this romance. Happiness, frustration, anger, hot and bothered. My head was all over the place, but I devoured every page in one sitting.I was a mess during this bumpy ride. Sometimes I didn’t know up from down, but Meagan carried me through this crazy ride the only way she knows how. She pulls you apart, makes you think and shocks you in ways you can’t imagine. But when the roller coaster comes to a stop, you realize what a great journey she’s taken you on and she was there every step of they way. What’s next?!? We have a wonderful array of supporting characters to choose from, so your guess is as good as mine. I can’t wait!

WOW!!! This angsty story took me on a ride I was not at all expecting!Alec was the guy that tormented Oakley growing up. His brother Rowan was her protector and best friend. All Oakley ever wanted was for Rowan to love her. Now they are all grown up, no more excuses, and Rowan still shows no interest, unless Alec is in the picture.Alec was not at all what he seemed. He's back after being away on a job for Blaze. No one knows where he's been or what he's been doing. Now he's Oakley's partner at the training program at Blackline Academy, where they train applicants in the art of fire fighting. Only the best graduate Blaze, which is the elite of the graduating class. Only the best become Blaze. Both Alec and Oakley share that title.Alec is all alpha and extremely possessive. He feels like he has held back long enough with Oakley. He gave Rowan his chance. Now it's game on. He is gonna do whatever he needs to finally get the girl. The girl he would do anything to protect.This story was complex. Alec wants his girl, but it's not going to be easy. That past job where he disappeared for two years, has found it's way back into his present. Now he needs to protect Oakley and show her how he is the only man for her.This story was unforgettable. The angst was high and I had to take a break. At one point I was in total shock and could not believe what I had just read....but I needed to find out how it would all come together. This story had it all! It was totally hot and completely blew my mind. Read It!!!

Meagan writes a story of angst, mystery, and romance, The emotions I had from the start to the finish of “The Wrong Blaze” were all over the place. Every chapter had me gripping my kindle because it was intense. The uniqueness of the story and characters were amazing. I have to say I love Alec. His journey to love was not easy. Oakley journey was to learn to trust the one person who she has disliked since childhood. This won’t be easy for either of them and the angst is at an all level high. You will get burned and You’ll loved it. I did. Bravo Meagan!

The first part of this story appeared in an anthology way back when and ended with an unbelievable cliff hanger. So I waited NOT so patiently and I was rewarded for said patience. Wow what a story. It had everything Angst. Suspense. Lies. Betrayal. Fear. Anger. Revenge. Lust and Love. What a stomach dropping ride she took me on. I hope she continues to write more stories like this one.

Holy freaking intense!!!! The Wrong Blaze is this amazing rollercoaster of angst, intrigue, steamy sexy times and humor. Alec is such an alpha a$$hole, with a good heart, and Oakley is this seriously sassy badass. They were like oil and water, match to blazing hot fire and they are just so perfect together. But dang Meagan Brandy there were times I just wanted to yell at them!!! This is a book that you really have a hard time putting down because you just want to know what the heck is going!! Well done Meagan, well done.

The book was well written. I,however, absolutely hate when the alpha/hero/whatever sleeps with other women after he's been "the one". It doesn't matter the reason, that's not what I want to read. I also almost stopped reading during 1 specific scene because I don't get at all how people in love can "share" like . I went to write the review, but went back to the scene just to make sure it played out, and it was actually stopped, but still.

5 STARS FOR THE WRONG BLAZE!! This story is like being on a jungle ride, it is hot, wild and unpredictable. Each page has you either on the edge of your seat or ready to throw your kindle. Alec, Rowen and Oakley are dying to tell you their story and you need to hear it. I am loving these journeys that Meagan Brandy takes us readers on and i know you will too, do yourself a favor and 1-Click this book.

I found this work historical, biographical, and hermeneutic. The author brings the Sistine Chapel, including the Last Judgment, to life in interesting ways. He utilizes metaphor, mythology, and interpretation to integrate his ideas and others' interpretations of the frescoes. His historical sources are varied, but he utilizes the writings of two of Michelangelo's contemporaries primarily for biographical purposes. The work is straightforward and enlightening, and is very well written and sourced.

At the age of 23, I stepped into the Sistine Chapel, looked up and thought, "So this is it?" As I stared at the ceiling the figures seemed to come alive and I was mesmerized. 50 years later I still remember that moment. My only complaint about this book is that I would have liked for the pictures to be next to the text rather than the pictures all at one time. I recommend having a copy of the painting as you read the descriptions and interpretations. It is a good study of a one-of-a-kind work of genius.

Well done but the best book on the subject (in my opinion) is Ross King's Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling.

I enjoyed learning more about what life was like for the sculpture turrned painter, and conditions under Pope Julius 2. Without a Catholic background, I had much to learn. How could the author know what Michelangelo was thinking so long ago? The art talk and religious theory gets heavy at times, but this is the book to cover it. I regret that the Sistine Chapel closed before I could see it, but David and St. Peter's were wonderful on my one day in Rome.

Interesting book. Although I knew a lot about Michelangelo, this book had more less known information, making it pretty comprehensive..

Amazing description of the life and work of Michelangelo showing how his art and his faith grew as he worked.

this was a gift for my mother (a self admitted "Mike" fan [she hauled us off to Italy but we only visited cities where he had works exhibited....]) and she raves about it. Apparently she made notes on the first run thru and now plans to read it again just for fun

The author stays focused on the subject of the book, and I like his interpretations of Michelangelo's reasoning behind the painting's design, they seem logical and plausible. The author explains his conclusions in a linear and easy to follow fashion.I also liked when the author addressed details on some of the techniques used to paint the ceiling and also how the condition of the later paintings over the span of four years let's us compare Michelangelo's progress (painting freestyle and with increased speed) as a painter.
