A great and accurate book about an amazing person and wonderful role model who achieved so much because she trusted in God.! The film- Inn of the Sixth Happiness- which is based on G. Aylward's life, is entertaining in itself, but it's not true. Hollywood puts in a love story that did not exist and strips most references to religion in order to make the film seem "palatable" to secular audiences. I highly recommend this book.

A year ago I gave up reading fiction on the advice of an old Christian writer. I have been blessed by the stories of so many unlikely missionaries. God can turn a prostitute, a nazi soldier and a house maid into His servants. This book was easy to read. The tales of her journey through Eurasia sucked me in and her testimony left me energized. I was horrified by the conditions in which she brought 100 children over the mountains but nevertheless God kept the under His wing.I left fiction and found true stories that are more exhilarating than any made up fairytale.

Wow this woman had an extraordinary life. I loved reading this book. Much of the time I was sitting on the edge of my seat. I have since bought copies for several friends and family members. Worth ever minute of my time! It is about a British woman who moved to pre war china and her efforts to be a missionary and eventually save a large group of orphaned and abandoned children. She lived through the war years and eventually left the country after the communists took over and eventually ended up living in Taiwan with several of her adopted children. Bears little resemblance to the movie "Inn of the Sixth Happiness" which is a Hollywood Version of the book.

Any one will be blessed to read this true story by Gladys Aylward on her life serving in China that she shares from 28 yrs of age till into her sixties. She was a determined young lady & overcomes many obstacles but all the time seeing the Lord's way of providing. As humble as she is it humbles the person reading this and to be grateful to God for food, clothing, and home that Gladys shares was sparse for many people & children going days without eating. She was used of God to stop the foot binding of girls in China. Search Utube to see pictures/videos of it & you will be appalled at what the foot looks like and the pain endured.

Amazing display of the grace and power of God in the life of one who was inadequate for service in the eyes of people who tried to discourage Gladys from going to China as a missionary. Her obedience to go to China alone and without the aid of a missions board was rewarded by the Lord. Not only was she known throughout northern China as one who loves, but led many people to Christ and rescued hundreds of children in the midst of war. An example of God using the weak to show His great power, grace and mercy. If you like to read missionary biographies, this is a must read! I have seen Hollywood's version of Gladys Aylward' s life in China but it doesn't compare to the real story. I would love to see this remarkable story made into a Christian movie. What faith, bravery, obedience, joy and sacrifice this small lady experienced is a great reminder that "little is much when God is in it!"

Gladys Aylward was certainly a courageous, determined, committed woman who loved God as she served Him in the country of China. Feeling God had called her to be a missionary to China, she did not let the fact that the missionary society turned her down, deter her from what she felt she was to do. She went alone. Setting off from England by transcontinental railway all the way across Europe and Russia with war going on between the Russians and Japanese was a never-to-be-forgotten adventure. Her experiences once she reached China in 1932 were also amazing. The 1958 movie, "Inn of the Sixth Happiness" starring Ingrid Bergman as Gladys Aylward was a very popular fictionalized account of Gladys' life, and her very brave feat of leading 100 children, singlehandedly on a long arduous journey to safety during the Japanese-Chinese war. The book is fairly short, but so worth your time to read it.

The true story of a woman who got herself to China as a missionary because no missionary board thought she was acceptable, or capable of learning the language. God's timing was perfect. Social change was happening in China at the time and the local government used her to inspect the feet of little girls. She was able to share Bible stories as she told the women and girls about God's protection. When the Japanese invaded She eventually brought over 100 children out of the country with little food and water having adopted several of them. She had become a Chinese national not long after arriving in China and dressed as Chinese hoping this would help her to fit in with the people.Gladys physically wore herself out. She later tried to return to China but was unable to. She did settle in Taiwan.Part of her story is told in a Hollywood movie, The Inn of Sixth Happiness. Although great liberties are taken in the movie, such as using the tall, Ingrid Bergman, as Gladys, it was an interesting movie, although Gladys didn't like it. She felt it took too many liberties. She had never kissed a man and they developed a love story in the movie. I sought out the book after having watched the movie on TV. I figured there has to be a book about this woman. I just wished there was more of her life included!

I totally enjoyed the story of a little woman that the Lord used mightily for His glory and the benefit of the Chinese Christians. May He raise up more little women who are prepared to give their lives for others. In the midst of horrendous persecution the message of the gospel is music to the ears of those whose hearts have been prepared for it. May their tribe increase in every country so there will be many around the throne of our Risen Savior.

I've liked this book since I was a little girl, and reorganized my bathroom and bedroom in Berenstain style...and kept my thing and files maticulously organized (until I had kids). In the helter-skelter of my children's mess I can't buy physical copies of books anymore or they will become destroyed...so an electronic copy was perfect and my kids love the story too. Hopfully they will fimd it as inspiring as I did as a kid.

I firmly believe all of life's problems can be solved by the Berenstain Bears. The messy room is an all time favorite of both "cubs" and parents. Most mothers can relate when mama bear loses it and starts throwing toys out much to the Cubs horror. I also appreciate the fact that in this book papa bear comes to the rescue and solves the problem. In the Berenstain bear books papa is often treated as the parent who makes all the mistakes in a bumbling and lovable way. It is nice to see papa bear receive the respect he deserves and the realization that mama bear isn't perfect all the time.

This book describes the messy fast paced life of most children. It is cute and has a good lesson behind it. This book can be used in the classroom to help with student organization. Sometimes classrooms, especially in younger grades, can get really messy because things aren't put back where they are supposed to go, and kids get in such a rush they forget to clean up. So by reading this book and showing that cleaning and organizing can have a positive impact you and your students can start an annual cleaning day for each month. Start that day by finding a place for everything, get the students input, have them help make colorful and creative labels, and then sit back down and admire your handiwork. Then for the res of the month make sure to have students put things in their places as best as they can. By the time the next cleaning day comes around, the better job they did putting things away each day, the less they have to clean on cleaning day. And as the Bears said, it is a lot more fun to play and work in a clean environment.

I grew up reading the Berenstain Bear books and we only have a few of them at my mothers house. When my daughter got old enough for them I was so happy to be able to find them for her. :) We are slowly building up her collection of books. Figured we would start with the ones with the correct message for her attitude right now.I love this one because it teaches about organization and taking responsibility for your space but it also shows that adults can be emotional and overwhelmed. I especially love that Momma Bear is the one who gets fed up and Papa Bear comes in and helps settle the situation dn comes up with the solution. Often in these books Momma Bear is the one who fixes it.

When I was a child, I loved reading Berenstain Bear books and kept many of them to pass down to my kids. I was thrilled when my 5 year old son began reading. I give these to him and he loves them! This was one of the books that I did not have in my collection so I wanted to add it for him so he would have a new one to read. They are easy reads for little ones and they are not hard back making it easier for little ones to hold. Love the books!!

The importance of cleaning up a mess is a timeless message. Unlike many of the other Berenstain books which are very dated (e.g. Too Much Junk Food), this one is relatable even to a toddler in 2018, just as it was for me in the 80s.

My child loves these books and it has taken him from reluctant reader to book-worm as he works his way through all the Berenstain books he can find and giggles as he reads them. He even is happy to read them aloud to me and we laugh together at the story and when he says i am just like Mama Bear.

Great book for children as they get older. My grandson is not a cleaner up er therefore it is a great one for him. He is at an age where he needs to learn it is his time to help. When he visits us he knows Grandma will not let him go home until all the toys are in the play pen where he used to play. Now he can chose toys then pull the play pen back into the empty bedroom where it is kept until he visits again. He thinks of all the toys as his but they are for all the little boys I have raised. (4 the oldest is over 40)

The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court

From Publishers Weekly

It's not laws or constitutional theory that rule the High Court, argues this absorbing group profile, but quirky men and women guided by political intuition. New Yorker legal writer Toobin (The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson) surveys the Court from the Reagan administration onward, as the justices wrestled with abortion, affirmative action, the death penalty, gay rights and church-state separation. Despite a Court dominated by Republican appointees, Toobin paints not a conservative revolution but a period of intractable moderation. The real power, he argues, belonged to supreme swing-voter Sandra Day O'Connor, who decided important cases with what Toobin sees as an almost primal attunement to a middle-of-the-road public consensus. By contrast, he contends, conservative justices Rehnquist and Scalia ended up bitter old men, their rigorous constitutional doctrines made irrelevant by the moderates' compromises. The author deftly distills the issues and enlivens his narrative of the Court's internal wranglings with sharp thumbnail sketches (Anthony Kennedy the vain bloviator, David Souter the Thoreauvian ascetic) and editorials (inept and unsavory is his verdict on the Court's intervention in the 2000 election). His savvy account puts the supposedly cloistered Court right in the thick of American life. (A final chapter and epilogue on the 2006–2007 term, with new justices Roberts and Alito, was unavailable to PW.) (Sept. 18) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Bookmarks Magazine

The Nine is a welcome addition to the spate of recent Supreme Court histories (see Jan Crawford Greenburg's Supreme Conflict, ***1/2 May/June 2007). Informative and authoritative, Jeffrey Toobin's account draws on exclusive interviews with the principals (one critic cited a possible breach of secrecy) and offers colorful anecdotes about the members of the Court. The most important parts of the book explore Sandra Day O'Connor's critical swing votes, Clinton's impeachment hearings, and the Court's role in Bush v. Gore. "The tragedy," Toobin concludes, "was not that it led to Bush's victory, but the inept and unsavory manner that the justices exercised their power." Only David J. Garrow, a Supreme Court historian, faulted Toobin's "debatable opinions" and disdain for various justices. Well written, though chronologically disjointed, The Nine is, overall, a timely and important examination of the Court's past-and its future.Copyright © 2004 Phillips & Nelson Media, Inc.

Toobin's book covers the history of the US Supreme Court from the summer of 1991 through the spring of 2007. Throughout his work, he provides biographical information of the Nine (Rehnquist, Stevens, O'Connor, Scalia, Kennedy, Souter, Thomas, Ginsburg, Breyer), plus the most recent two (Roberts & Alito). Toobin interviewed all 11 justices, as well as a number of former law clerks, journalists and numerous others involved in the courts and politics. The two major themes that run throughout the 340 pages are (1) the push and pull between the conservatives and the liberals on the court and (2) the evolution of the jurisprudence of a number of the justices (especially O'Connor and Kennedy). After a stinging defeat in Thornburgh v. American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (a Pennsylvania law which attempted to restrict abortions) in 1985, the Reagan Administration and conservatives had an epiphany: "they didn't need better arguments; they just needed new justices" (17).Christian conservatives began to increase their power within the GOP in the 1980's (led by men like James Dobson, Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson). By 1990, their stated goals included the following: "Reverse Roe. Expand executive power. Speed executions. Welcome religion into the public sphere. Return the Constitution from its exile since the New Deal" (272).Clarence Thomas was nominated to replace Thurgood Marshall during the summer of 1991. Even though George H.W. Bush and Thomas expressed their opposition to affirmative action, Thomas clearly was the beneficiary of it. Marshall's negative view of Thomas is captured vividly in chapter 2, as is the battle between Anita Hill and Thomas during his confirmation hearings in October, 1991.Rehnquist ran the court very differently than Burger. This is how he ran the court's conferences: (1) he would summarize the case and state his position; (2) justices would do the same in order of seniority; (3) no one spoke twice until everyone spoke once; (4) no one received a writing assignment until he/she had finished the previous one; (5) every justice had an assignment before someone was given a second; and (6) the senior justice on the majority gave the assignment, as did the senior justice on the minority.Despite being a popular and efficient Chief Justice, even Rehnquist knew that the court truly belonged to Sandra Day O'Connor. In the 1992 abortion case Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Robert P. Casey, O'Connor wrote that state restrictions on abortion procedures could be upheld as long as they don't cause an undue burden. Her term of "undue burden" would redefine Roe and helped guarantee women's autonomy and health (58-59).Toobin devotes over 40 pages to Bush v. Gore and the problems with the votes in Florida. The roles of the Florida legislature, the Florida Supreme Court and the Supreme Court (all three appeared to be biased) are detailed and contrasted against each other. We learn about Stephen Breyer's increasing influence on the court (128) and Anthony Kennedy's movement to the left based on his contact with judges and legal scholars from around the world (182). Kennedy gave the majority opinion in the Lawrence vs. Texas (2003) case, which struck down laws that seek to inhibit homosexual relations between two consenting adults within their home (189-190).The Michigan Cases in 2003 about race and admissions in college and law school are described in chapters 16 and 17. The court's ruling against the Bush administration about Gitmo is dealt with in chapters 18 and 19.Part Four of the book focuses on the nominations of Roberts and Alito. Special attention is devoted to the savaging of Alberto Gonzalez (who was only rumored to be a potential nominee) and Harriet Miers (who was nominated in the summer of 2005) by Christian Conservatives, who believed that neither Gonzalez nor Miers were ideologically strong enough to merit a seat on the court (it is eerily reminiscent of some scenes from 1984).The book finishes with Breyer's role in two religious cases in 2005(regarding public displays of religious works in government buildings) and Ginsburg's scathing dissent (a rarity) regarding the 2007 Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (the ruling stated that a woman must file within 180 days of being discriminated against in the workplace in regards to pay - Ginsburg stated that it might be years before a woman realized that she had been the victim of an unfair system). It is an exceptionally well-written book and a joy to read.

This is a heavily abridged audio version of Toobin's longer published book. I enjoy Toobin on CNN a great deal; his reporting is even-handed, "lawyer-ly" (in a good sense) and very smart, in general. This book follows much the same pattern. Toobin is not extreme, and he is not rabidly political. If you want a solid work on the background of the Supreme Court, this is it. One caveat however, regarding this audio book: it is a much shortened edition of the real book, and I was very disappointed when I discovered that, in that much of the legal analysis has been dropped in favor of narrative. I regret that, as I regard Toobin as a real smart guy, from whom I can learn a great deal. Still, this audio book is a good start; the book is even better.

Writer does a very reasonable job in researching the topic, sees the Court as political--which it often is. He reaches for conclusions of "good" Democrats--"bad" Republicans when evaluating Kennedy decisions or opining on the basis for O'Connor rulings and her conclusions--which I doubt she ever spoke or wrote. You probably need to balance this slant on history with a more thorough reading of the Court's actual activity and some of O'Connor's writings. I expect the Judges would all consider themselves more intellectually grounded than Mr. Toobin gives credit. Over the last three decades the Court's decisions have been chronicled as more political, a trend it is hard to evaluate but Mr. Toobin assures us he has done so fairly...I and others don't remember history as he frames it in a number of sequences. I expect those leaning to the Democratic side of the isle will find his book entertaining and consistent with their reality. Perhaps they can explain why the Court's conservative majority did not overwhelmingly make all decisions on a political basis. Mr. Toobin does not create his data, and he does not misinterpret his facts--he just draws somewhat biased or unfounded conclusions. Good background info.

There is no doubt that Toobin has a gift for writing history with the average reader in mind. The Nine is both entertaining and educational, recounting the history of the Burger, Rheinquist and Roberts Courts. The book focuses separately on the political decisions and drama that lead to the composition of the Court, and the landmark cases of interest to the general public. Most striking is the recounting of "inside information" happening within the Justices' chambers during these historic moments. This book was not written for appellate lawyers, and does not dwell on little-known cases with (arguably) more legal importance than Roe v. Wade etc. But Toobin's aim is not to recant important case law, but to draw focus to the human actors and the way in which they made decisions affecting millions of Americans. He achieves this, and gives readers a privileged view into the most secretive branch of the US government.I do wish that Toobin had taken a more tempered approach to looking at the Supreme Court. When only focusing on contentious cases, one can walk away with a very jaded view of the good work the Justices do. To wit, a major element of the book is a narrative of a seedy conservative plot to take over the Court. While the Court has no doubt drifted right, Toobin's panic can seep through in off putting ways. Unfortunately, this is largely to do with the historical moment Toobin focuses on which is exclusively after the Warren Court. A reader interested in the politics of the Court would be wise to expand their inquiries to other sources, and other periods of Court history, and take Toobin's conclusions with a grain of salt.

“Absolutely delicious.”—Washington PostFrom the mystique of the glamorous Kennedys to the tumult that surrounded Bill and Hillary Clinton during the president’s impeachment to the historic tenure of Barack and Michelle Obama, each new administration brings a unique set of personalities to the White House—and a new set of challenges to the fiercely loyal and hardworking people who serve them: the White House residence staff. In her runaway bestseller The Residence, former White House correspondent Kate Andersen Brower pulls back the curtain on the world’s most famous address. Drawing on hundreds of hours of interviews with butlers, maids, chefs, florists, doormen, and other staffers—as well as conversations with three former first ladies and the children of four presidents—Brower offers a group portrait of the dedicated professionals who orchestrate lavish state dinners; stand ready during meetings with foreign dignitaries; care for the president and firstlady’s young children; and cater to every need the first couple may have, however sublime or, on occasion, ridiculous.“Superbly reported. . . . The Residence is an informative and well-written book. I did not expect it to be "literature", and it wasn't, but it was entertaining. I liked the physical descriptions of "the house" as well as the numbers and variety of persons needed to keep it up. Part of the services like having the first family's preferred toothpaste(s) out and ready each evening - that reminded me of my reading about England's Royal Family. We are told the queen sleeps each night on sheets that have been washed exactly four times! I am impressed with the fidelity and loyalty of the White House staff and at the same time perplexed at what feels like a bit much to an average person like myself. The author well-researched her information, but just due to passing years and availability of the staff, we are pretty much limited to the Carters, Regans, Bushes (2), Clintons, and Obamas. For the reason I just mentioned, Clintons and Obamas have more coverage. The Residence is exactly what I expected. It is not a tell-all book, but a collection of fond remembrances interspersed with architectural, floral, photographic, and food events.

While giving some of the most in-depth and fascinating accounts of serving in the White House, the book meanders back and forth with its various topics.Instead of having a chapter on keeping what servants see a secret, the topic comes up again and again, chapter after chapter, while also discussing the presidents fraternizing with the help, again and again, chapter by chapter, and in the middle, continually mentioning again and again that some servants stay on for decades, again and again, chapter after chapter. If my rambling seems a bit unprofessional, you have now gotten to experience what it is like to try to traverse the pages of The Residence. The material is wonderful, but it's presentation is, well, see above.

I'm starting chapter 4 now. The outline of the book is not chronological, but event based. For example, chapter 1, "Controlled Chaos" should just be called "Inaugurations" since it is stories from various inaugurations.I'm finding it hard to read because it's not really a story, it's tidbit from interviews, all mixed together within the topics of the chapters, not chronological in how it's represented. It's seems like interview notes all converted to a book with just a few sentences to tie them together. It seems to me the book is repeating the same thing over and over. The stories of the people who worked there are interesting, but how they are strung together makes it hard to follow.

This book felt like I was reading a series of disjointed anecdotes, with no specific timeline or subject matter. I found the anecdotes fascinating and well-researched. However, how difficult would it have been to put them in chronological order? The reader gets whiplash bouncing between years, administrations, topics, and events. Occasionally there is an attempt to group them, such as "children", but then other stories about presidential children are scattered throughout the rest of the book as well. It would have been much more enjoyable with a little organization.

What a FASCINATING book! Yes, FASCINATING in all caps. This is the inside story of the White House's two-story private residence for the first families--from the Eisenhowers to the Obamas.Author Kate Andersen Brower, a former White House reporter for Bloomberg News, conducted assiduous research and extensive interviews for this book, talking on the record to dozens of retired White House residence employees (some of whom worked at "the house" for 50 years), as well as some former first ladies and first children and presidential aides. While there is lots of juicy inside info--such as, the staff regularly removing bongs from the bedrooms of Jimmy Carter's sons, dealing with outrageous (even shocking) demands from Lyndon Johnson and Nancy Reagan and the Clintons' extreme paranoia--the employees without exception speak of their time in the White House with awe and respect. They may have been making up beds and changing light bulbs, but they were doing it for the president of the United States. They were first-hand witnesses to history. Not to be missed is the section on what it was like to be in the White House when JFK was assassinated and on 9/11.Get this book today and start reading! It is unlike any book you have ever before read on the presidents and their families.

In this awful, ugly, presidential campaign year, The Residence is the perfect antidote to all the crass, coarse, mean-spirited blather that assaults us every day. This is a beautiful book: inspiring, respectful, and yes, patriotic. The glimpses into history, as well as into the real lives of our first families, provide real insight into the tremendous pressures and responsibilities inherent in occupying The White House. The grace, dignity and discretion of those who serve the First Family and make the President's job doable on a daily basis offer lessons for us all.

It's a good read. Some of the stories are very interesting. It bogs down with repetitiveness at times and there aren't super shocking revelations but more of a gentle summer book perhaps. There are moments that are riveting, though, which makes me glad I purchased it. Especially how much the employees at the WH give of their time and how that affects their home lives. These people, mostly, dedicate their lives to their service. I found the Clintons stay there of particular interest and was not surprised to find that they, at first, had little or no experience in dealing with staff nor was Hillary Ms. Decorator of the Year. It's an amazing relationship that evolves very quickly for obvious reasons once a new President's family enters our country's home to take up residence and the staff should be applauded loudly for how well and with such lightning speed they transition. A good read before bed and another fine example of how flexible a people we are and how much we value our own history.

A Duke discovers the young lady he's neglected as his betrothed, is a lot more interesting than he realized. Over the Christmas holidays his biggest problem is convincing her that she comes first.Believe me, she makes him work for it 🤗

The story revolves around Marie who has been betrothed to Lionel, the Duke of Ware since childhood. In the previous years he seems to have avoided her at all costs and now suddenly he seems to be interested in her. Marie, who is very outspoken, hears rumors about his previous actions and confronts him. There is a lot of humor in the story from both Marie and Lionel and in the end there is a HEA but a lot happens before this occurs. The couple has to contend with his mother who is determined to keep them apart. The book is a great read and I would highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed.

I love Christmas stories and love Regency Period romance tales. No surprise that I was delighted to get my hands on Ellie St. Clair’s Duke of Christmas. It’s a perfect second chance romance that’s perfectly set into a Christmas tale. And a perfect set of characters in spirited Lady Marie Colemore and her Duke, Lionel Harrington, who discovers almost too late just how foolish he’d been to long avoid his betrothed. Pure yumminess. Since I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I will stop for now - except to note that, quite frankly, this is wonderful.

This is such a charming Christmas romance! I loved every page of it! Our heroine is Marie, the daughter of a Marquess who was promised in marriage some years back to Lionel, the Duke of Ware. For years he shows no interest in her, living life as he pleased. But when he encounters the grownup Marie, he realizes that he does want a future with her. He gets himself invited to the family’s week long Christmas celebration in the country. The growing relationship between the two of them is filled with delightful banter, tenderness, and a sizzling romance! A wonderful Christmas read!

1784...Marie is visited in her bedroom, alone, with Lionel. Where upon, she takes off her clothes, and proceeds to straddle his lap. They have sex, where he ‘murmers, come for me, Marie’.In her parent’s home. With servants all around.Did you do any research at all? As to the language usage? The situations? The customs of the times? If not, why not just write a contemporary story? It takes more to make a historical romance, than just dressing your characters in period costumes. This was a totally unrealistic disappointment to me.

Ms. St. Clair has yet again delivered a lovely romance! Two stubborn people both set in their ways, both scared of getting hurt, married off to each other. Will the fear of heartache and rejection keep them apart? This book touched me as the characters are well written and you feel the emotions they go through. Because of their past, a possible great love may not be reached and this has you yearning to help them. Enjoyed every page of this book!!!!

Marie and Lionel’s story was a very nice read. I really like Lionel, I think I have a little crush on him. Once he decides what he wants there is no stopping him. Marie is the perfect women for him. I enjoyed this novella so much I could not put it down. It made me feel good and put a smile on my face.

Lionel has been avoiding his betrothal to Marie. When Marie confronts him about his lascivious behavior he becomes intrigued. It won't be long before he wonders why he waited so long. I received a complimentary copy and I am voluntarily reviewing.

From Bookforum

A private-press LP at the thrift store is a curio, a personal find, but the same LP featured in a coffee-table book is a collector’s item. Whatever you might have made of the original, it wasn’t—by definition—salable. After being included in this stylish art book though, that scarcity becomes value. And it’s unmistakable that many of the album covers in Enjoy the Experience have the novelty, mystery, and visual apeal that translate into consumer desirability. Indeed, that desirability underliesmuch of the book’s raison d’être. Like galleries or fine-art collectors, the editors of Enjoy the Experience, have, in cataloguing their passion, marketed it as well. […] The album art in this volume stretches the genre because we haven’t seen it before. But once we have, the real surprise may be how comfortably it fits inside. —Damon Krukowski

Review

The private-press LPs documented in this spectacularly fun coffee-table book routinely cross those boundaries - sometimes with an eye toward the slick, other times toward the sick, but rarely with hopes for anything like popular approval. Although many of the elements found here - stock images, cliched photoops, idiosyncratic philosophies, and a distorted sense of self - played tjeir role in commercial album art, the homemade versions extend these strategies into the realm of outsider art. A private-press LP at the thrift store is a curio, a personal find, but the same LP featured in a coffee-table book is a collector's item. Whaterver you might have made of the original, it wasn't - by definition- salable. (Damon Krukowski Bookforum)Coming in at a whopping 512 pages with over 1,000 illustrations, this book is a Herculean feat of cultural musicology, graphic design, and collectorship siphoned through the rich history of private-press recordings - vynil record albums produced and paid for by the musicians themselves, mainly in the 1960s and '70s in the U.S. (Sarah E. Fensom Art & Antiques)An affectionate overview …of the musically-inclined but record-labelly-declined. (Editors Esquire UK)“Sumptuous… editors Johan Kugelberg, Michael P. Daley, and Paul Major have collected more than 1,000 of the wildest, weirdest, sweetest, and coolest vanity vinyl covers.” (Editors Spin.com)A collective aura of strangeness. (Edtors The Guardian)The albums memorialized here aren’t from a better time or a more passionate place ― the internet is full of evidence that the beautiful, iterative spirit of humans is hardly dead. But there is a specific light shining through the detritus of all the missions noted here: Once upon a time, it was really difficult to release your own album. The time and focus necessary to make one of these things was part of a ritual act. Reaching even the most distant shore of the mainstream was about devotion as much as ambition. Salute the sweat. (Sasha Ferra-Jones The New Yorker)Plumbing the depths of many obsessed collectors’ archives (including their own), editors Michael P. Daley and Johan Kugelberg pulled the best of the very best records. (Storm Christian Vice.com)

This book, in 505 pages, contains around 1,000 of the oddest, weirdest, DIY album covers you'll ever see from the years 1958-1992. This is the world of the privately pressed record album. And that includes the album jacket. This handsome large format hardcover book is filled with "artists" who never had a prayer of being picked up by a large record label. So they went the do-it-yourself-route, including the album artwork. In fact, the artwork for this book's cover is taken from an album cover photo which has been used more than once. Image size ranges from several to a page to larger (some one to a page) reproductions. Personally I dislike small images because I'm from the 12" vinyl album era. The same with books that collect music posters-the bigger the reproduction the better. But I know that size is related to price and the physical size of the book. To put it simply-this is the best book yet on oddball album covers that's been published. The combination of graphics, biographies and interviews make this the book to have in your library. The book (which comes sealed in plastic) has a removable OBI strip, and the 7" clear record is inside a plastic sleeve on the back of the book. The paper stock is a matte finish. The reproductions are crisp and clean-no fuzzy graphics here. At the bottom of each page is listed the title, artist, date (if known), recording company (if known), and the Catalog number. There's also biographies on a number of people whose albums are included in the book. These add both depth and interest to the collection. Finally there's an "A-to-Z of our favorite tunes" at the back of the book. You also have a chance to hear some of this music on the companion set-released on both vinyl and CD.A number of genres are here, including some that are difficult to categorize. And that's what makes this book so fascinating. It's not that this is inherently terrible artwork-though some is-but rather it's a fascinating look into how people see their music (or whatever, in some cases), and how they want it represented. Check out Fab Company, "...Our Songs, For You". Or right across the page is Ethel Delaney with "Heeere's 'Ethel'" (sic) with the Buckeye Strings. Or ("The Man Of Many Voices") Bob Harrison-with his album "Yellow Moon". Or Lee Wyatt's album "Candlelight". Another great cover is by The Outlaws, whose album, "Big Mac" shows a photo of the band in prison garb in front of the Oklahoma State Penitentiary. And right next to it is an album titled "Contraceptive Put You On" (sic), with a lot of naked women on the cover. Or a slightly disturbing album cover by Roy Waldrop, "Heart of a Clown", check it out and I think you'll agree. And one of my real favorites is here, Mistress Mary-housewife (sic). She's billed as a "wife, mother, civic leader, etc., artiste". There's some great song titles including "Smooth Talking Con-man", "Dirt Will Be Yer Name" (sic), and "I Don't Wanna Love Ya Now" (sic). Included on the (undated) album jacket is a sexy photo (in color!) of Mistress Mary lying on some pillows, and some b&w photos of Mistress Mary, apparently at home rustling up some grub, sweeping the kitchen floor and relaxing on some pillows watching TV. The notes tell us (among other things) that she sings "some country-western", "some soft-soul", and "some whatever". Apparently a solo album, Mary is responsible for "Songs, Sing, Strum". She's also "...the exploding celestial cosmo in the heavenly housewifes firmament of the entertainment field..." (sic). She seems to reside in Hacienda Heights, Ca. Hmmm. And then there's Robbie The Werewolf (Robison). A folk singer who spoofed other folkies and their music of the day-sometimes by dressing up as a werewolf. Robison was married to Barbara Robison-better known as Sandi Peanut Butter, of The Peanut Butter Conspiracy. Fans of late 60's L.A. music will remember their two albums originally on the Columbia label. He also played with Dallas Taylor and Bob Seal and a few others in a band that would morph from the Garnersfield Sanitarium into Brain Train, and then into Clear Light, known for their lone album on the Elektra label. Robison's album "At The Waleback" was recorded at the same venue that the pre-Peanut Butter Conspiracy group, The Ashes (who also recorded), also played. And I really like the two-part cover painting by The Gospel Rhythm-Aires, "I'll Never Be Afraid", with cut-outs of the family singers "standing" in a painted forest with a hazy impression of Jesus, with arms outstretched, above them. The other half of the cover is a painting of a city in smoke and flames. And then there's the many albums by singers/musicians/ oddballs that you've never heard of-and I have to wonder-whatever happened to all these people? All are good examples of DIY album artwork. To help shed some light into what we're looking at (if that's possible) there's an interview (among other pieces regarding this music) with Paul Major (also known as Top Dollar to fans) on rare/privately pressed records. Also included are excerpts of record reviews from Major's "Catalogs 1986-2000". Some of the many biographies of these people are pretty interesting, and really give good depth to the album art. The essays give those interested a good look into the musical lives of a number of these "artists".But the main reason for purchasing this book is the extensive look at a small but vital part of the record industry who cater to privately pressed albums. The only factor that would make fans stop and think about purchasing this cool book is the high price. It's a beautiful book, with thick front and back covers, there's a 7" single on how to get your own album out, and a cardboard download card with a printed code which can be used to listen to some of this music. There's also a collection of recordings available from some of these "artists". But this is pretty esoteric going here, so fans into album artwork (like me) who like off-beat artwork are the only ones who will be interested. But if you've ever rummaged through stacks of albums at The Salvation Army, used vinyl record stores, or a pile of albums at a garage sale, and come up with some oddball album with a strange cover, and thought "I've got to have this", then this book is for you.

A photographic document of private press record covers. If you've ever enjoyed browsing through the cheapo shelves underneath the "good" records-- laughing at the cheesy covers or appreciating a naive or strange illustration-- you'll enjoy this book. The text often leaves something to be desired, though. Many artist profiles fail to convey what exactly is noteworthy or unique about a given artist, and are instead clunky rundowns of biographical details without context. Sometimes the authors seem hamstrung by an inability to poke fun at their subjects, which is crippling if said artist was picked precisely because their music is actually funny-- odd, or off-kilter or cracked. It's the opposite approach of Irwin Chusid's all-too-often derisive approach in Songs in the Key of Z, a kind of tossed-off, workmanlike vagueness in the prose. The accompanying music is good-- a few tracks are wonderful-- although perhaps the range of the music leaves something to be desired.Overall, an unusual and fun coffee table book with muddled prose but some great recommendations for further listening.

I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend, the vinylphile. My knowledge on the subject of vanity presses began and ended with The Shaggs, and I know the facts on their story are debated. That said, I think I've enjoyed this as a coffee table book, possibly more than he has. The cover art is the focus, but through browsing, you'll also learn about the culture and economics that brought these kind of recordings into being. I'll always treasure the story behind Jr. and his Soulettes, a child band managed by the eponymous Jr's dad, who ruined all their LPs by shrink wrapping them in a butcher shop to save money and hired prostitutes to dance with a puppet while he filmed it. This will be on our coffee table as long as we have one.

Just a wonderful book, filled with pictures and information, for anyone who likes to delve into the nether-regions of pop-culture. Beautifully presented, this is a classy title that lovingly looks at a hidden layer of American culture.

I was disappointed ... a book about records that uses a download card to replace a cool 7" record...publishers should rethink this..the first reviewer must have gotten an "early" copy (1 year ago?). This book is expensive...the 7" record adds value.... To me downloads are nothing special.. Put the 45 back in! By the way, this is NOT Amazon's fault...they correctly stated that there was a download card...reviewer #1 got a 45 and stated that...which is why I purchased it...It is an outstanding book that is unprecedented and that deserves much consideration for its academic excellence.

This was pretty cool, but probably something my husband (it was a gift) will only look through once.
