I saw this book at barnes and nobles and immediately fell in love with it. I am a person who wants to be off the grid, away from manufactured fruits and vegetables and living a life of self sustainability. Just because this book is based off what happens in the UK does not mean it cannot be utilized in the backwoods of the american south. There are a lot of wonderful ideas that I've been searching the internet for all here in this amazing book and some. Right now, I am in the middle of composting for the spring, summer, and fall months for my little garden and plotting on ideas that can be utilized for the future. What most people don't realize about this book is that it has everything one needs to live off the land in modern times. As a future nurse, I picture that the days that I am not working will be much filled with me working outside making my land count and erasing my carbon foot print from the streets of South Carolina.
This is a great gift for a new homeowner or aspiring gardener but I also enjoyed it as a very experienced gardener. Lots of tips and tricks and ideas to get more out of your growing space, produce more and work in small spaces. I’m keeping this on my reference shelf and have come back to browse and read something frequently.
I actually received my book a lot quicker than expected. Which was great! This book is interesting and has great material in it for the beginner. My husband and I have been researching different options to the city life. Retired from the military we want to settle down with some land for gardening and a few animals. Our age makes living outside a city perfect as we would still be able to manage our lifestyle and keep in touch with my work and friends.
I'm not generally the reviewer sort, but this book stood out. I've collected pretty much all the old standby homesteading and gardening books over the years, but this has grown to be my favorite over the year I've owned it. The author writes with deep understanding of his material, but leaves room for creativity and flexibility to be applied to his ideas by the reader. He also seems so joyfully engaged in what he writes about.

Great for How To prepping or just plane doing projects for fun. Much cheaper than at a book store.
From an urban strip of dirt to a big farm...this book has it all. Not intimidating , lots of great ideas and how-to-dos with a ton of pix, but enough content to teach anyone something new. (plants and animals!!) Very useful to anyone regardless if a complete novice or an old pro.
