Didn't realize these were re-issued with a different illustrator. Will be returning them. The new illustrations have neither the terror nor the nostalgia that the originals by Stephen Gammell had.The choice to remove such unique and memorable artwork in favor of something so plain and unremarkable is baffling, particularly after 30 years of the originals being printed. These might be better toned down for your (boring) children, but if you were hoping to reminisce about the terrors of your childhood, you'll have to look elsewhere.

The Mass Market Paperback version does indeed have the artwork of Stephan Gammel. The cover a bit different and is smaller in size than the 1 and 3 I got when I was a kid. So the set doesn't match completely. But it has the same stories and artwork so I am satisfied. I do wish that, at least, the cover was the one pictured. The one I received is not.

Because I remember loving and being absolutely terrified at these books when I was a kid, I recently purchased all 3 and just received them today. To my horror (and not in a good way) I found that they've published them with a DIFFERENT ILLUSTRATOR! With all due respect to Mr. Helmquist (the new guy) and certainly to Mr. Schwartz (the original author), these books were made for me by the art of Stephen Gammell. I'm sure they did this because so many parents tried to get the books banned in their day because of the ghastly drawings, but this is really a tragedy. I would suggest looking elsewhere for original copies of the books as they should be seen. Don't buy them here - you'll be missing out on part of what made these books so wonderful in the first place.

This book is nostalgic for me. As a kid, we'd hide in the closet and read this book by flashlight. Back then, the stories were scary and stuck with you. I made sure to buy this version of the book to get the original artwork that was in them. Reading them now, the stories are definitely directed toward children (as described) and aren't quite as terrifying as I remember, but still fun to read through and remember. What makes this a complete five star for me is the illustrations, which in my opinion, are even scarier as an adult!Great purchase, great memories. I recommend it, especially for those who grew up with these books! Also, I bought a used copy to make sure that I got the version with the original drawings. There is a newer version out there that doesn't have Stephen Gammell's work in it, so beware about that if you're buying it for the art work!

Loved this book, love this book, will probably love it till the slithery dee gets me (book reference). A great bit of nostalgia for many a horror fan. Though the stories are well enough, it is with the accompaniment of Stephen Gammell's art that make these books truly unique and fear provoking. I urge you to shop the used books ...not only to save cash but to have a higher chance of getting the original books. The newer editions have less than original illustrations that just dilute the whole experience. That being said, buy used and start with the first of the classic trilogy! As a side: my copy came as an original in nearly mint condition. Luck.

These are the classic "scary" stories from my childhood in the late 80's early nineties. They aren't REALLY scary but the illustrations are totally creepy and wonderful. I bought the original paperback edition because I don't care for the newer edition's tamed down illustrations. My five year old loves creepy things and this is a favorite. I highly recommend this collection for young kids who want something spooky but not Stephen King spooky. Do yourself a favor and buy a used copy of the old edition before they become scarce. The drawings are what really sells it because the stories themselves are fun but pretty tame.

Yes! Original art! I was happy to have found this book in it's former glory. My daughter recently got obsessed with scary stories and promptly told me the ones I told were not scary enough. So naturally I bought this book. She says the drawings are too scary. One day she'll appreciate them....

This book, along with the first book and the third, are nostalgic for me. However, be careful when buying the books. I heard that the new ones don't have the original artwork, which is one of the reasons I enjoy these books, even as an adult. I bought it used, and while skimming through the stories, of course they are going to be a bit more cheesy than how you remember them as a child. The audience is for kids, but I still love to sit and read these from time to time just to remember how I felt as a kid.I hope to read these to my kids one day and hopefully they'll enjoy them just as much.
